  1. Looking for some opinions on our upcoming June 8 5-day cruise on Ex. We're a family of 4...2 parents and 2 teen daughters. We're planning on driving in from OH 3 days early and spend time in NYC. Assuming that I'm able to look at $400/night enough times that it starts to look acceptable, we'll likely stay in a hotel around Times Square. I've considered options like staying in Secaucus and using a bus back and forth to the city. It will be the first time in New York for my daughters so I'd like for them to have the experience of staying in the city, and have the flexibility to more easily return to the room during the day if needed.

Plan A has been to drive into the city, park the car at the hotel (looks like $50-60 a night for parking), use public transportation and taxis while in the city, and then drive to the pier on Saturday morning. I'm now thinking of driving to one of the recommended hotels near the pier on Friday night, and then go to the pier from there on Saturday for the cruise. This would save a few hundred dollars as compared to a Friday night hotel in the city. I didn't think that a stay and park deal near the pier would be worth it for a 5 night cruise since transportation to/from the pier would be more than parking. Reading several of the posts here has me thinking of yet another option. Stop first at the hotel that I'd use on Friday night and drop the car. Take a car service to our NYC hotel and then back again on Friday night. No need for a car in the city and parking willl probably cost us $180+.

    Several questions:

    1. Does the strategy of dropping the car near the pier and taking a car service into the city make sense? I've driven in NYC several times, so that's not an issue, but having someone else drive is always more relaxing than doing the driving myself.
    2. Do any of the stay and park deals include several nights of parking BEFORE you actually stay at the hotel? It will likely be 9 nights total using the hotel parking lot, with us actually staying in the hotel on the 4th night.
    3. Does anyone have any hotel recommendations in the city that will help with my hotel sticker shock?
    4. Anyone know (in general...I'm sure it varies by hotel) if hotels charge to store luggage for a day? If we move to a hotel near the pier on Friday night, we'd need to check out of our other hotel in the city on Friday morning, and then pick up the luggage after spending Friday in the city.
    5. If we just suck it up and drive/stay in the city the whole time, how long should we plan for it to take to drive from Times Square to the pier on a Saturday morning?
    6. General question...what's the typical time that they start boarding the ship? We like to get there a little early so that we're onboard and enjoying the ship as early as possible. For our recent Florida cruises, we've targeted for 10:30 or 11:00

    Thanks for your thoughts!

  2. Yeah, the Tamron is huge, almost similar to the Canon 100mm which is also a great lens, but a bit expensive.

The tamron is very sharp and give us a lot of detailed photos, also great for portraits!!

I'm still thinking if I take it to the cruise :p

I figure if I paid for it, I might as well take it and use it. I brought a 70-200 f/2.8 with me on the Allure and only used it once, but I got great shots of the Aqua Theater show. Was worth it just for those shots.

I'm just now getting caught up with this thread (been hanging out on the Allure board). Love the pictures! I wasn't initially a fan of HDR shots but they're growing on me. These pictures are a great example of why. Very nicely done.

  4. I spoke to some Contractors (From Orlando) and they suggested that the first 24 stores are scheduled to open in 2 weeks.

Radio - Thanks so much for the Falmouth info. Is that 2 weeks in normal time or Jamaica time? :D Sounds like our cruise in 2 weeks will either have a few shops open, or maybe still have the same arrangement that you experienced. I'm hoping for the former but can live with the later. Previous Falmouth reports had me concerned, but now you have me intrigued.

Anything that you can share about restaurants or local bars that you saw that might be good for tourists? Looking forward to more great pics of the rest of the cruise!

  5. OK. .. Everybody know that you have to sign up for the shows on all Oasis Class ships (and soon on Freedom Class). I signed up for many shows throughout the week, so I am OK, right ? Well maybe. . . I need to remember the time of the events to actually go to the shows.

Radio - I thought I read somewhere that you can see all of your reservations on your cabin TV. Is that correct?

  6. Thank you but I cannot take credit. It was mother nature. The only photo shot in B&W is the first pic of the trees and the other`s were not processed at all. That`s the kind of dark and dreary day it was! Believe it or not, the bridge photo is in colour. :p

I agree with the other comments...those are some of the best pics in this thread, no matter what camera you used! Great composition. Reminds me of an interesting quote that someone uses as their signature in another photography discussion forum..."That was an excellent meal. You must have really nice pots and pans!". :D

  7. A full circle would be difficult and could only be managed near the poles during the winter (24 hrs of darkness needed). The appearance of a full circle can be achieved by pointing the camera at the celestial north or south pole and exposing for 6-8 hours or making multiple shorter exposures and using an image stacking program to combine them. Actually, an exposure or combination of exposures totaling less than an hour can give the impression of circular trails.

Also remember little details like fresh batteries or an AC adapter. I was testing a programmable remote with the image above and am itching to try stacking ten five-minute exposures.

    Dave

Dave - What was the exposure time for your shot? The EXIF data says 599 seconds but the star trails would seem to be longer than 10 minutes.

  8. Said yet another way...

In the text of your posting, you will paste in text from your photo hosting site that looks like:

web address of picture on photo hosting site.

For one of my Photobucket pictures, this will look like:

    http://i775.photobucket.com/albums/yy32/macdonaldrc/Liberty%20of%20the%20Seas%20June%202010/IMG_1828_edited-1.jpg[/img

I purposely left off the last "]" so that it wouldn't actually show the picture in this reply, but instead show you what the text looks like. Most picture hosting sites will show you the above link so that you only need to copy the link from the site and then paste it into your CC posting. Photobucket calls it IMG Code and if you click on it, it's automatically copied to your clipboard. Other photo hosting sites may call it BBN Code, or possibly even something else.

If you click on the Preview Post button, CC will replace the confusing text with the picture in the preview window so that you can make sure that everything copied/pasted correctly. Don't worry, it's not as difficult as it sounds.

  9. Switched lenses for this one to my Sigma 30mm F1.4...scene from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Magic Kingdom (ISO3,200, F1.6, 1/15 - dark ride and movement handheld = high ISO!):

    original.jpg

zackiedawg - Very impressive for 3200. Did you do any post clean up or is your camera that noise free at high ISO?

I also like the Mann's Theater shot with the ghosted images at 8 seconds!

  10. RE: Night shots.

Just curious how you selected the amount of seconds in the shutter speed in relation to your F stops.

    TIA.

Johneeo - I'd highly recommend the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson ($25 at a book store, $15 online). It seemed like every photography site that I went to recommended this book, so I picked it up a few months ago. I'd be willing to be that after reading it, you won't be using auto anymore on your camera. You'll instead be doing things like what zackiedawg described. The book makes it pretty easy to understand when to choose which mode and why. I've recommended this book so many times that Bryan Peterson should be giving me a kickback. :D

  11. Found this thread yesterday and had only read a few postings when it was time for my wife and I to leave for dinner. I brought my camera with me (because of this thread!) and was able to get some shots looking down on the city of Cincinnati:

    IMG_3803.jpg

    IMG_3800.jpg

I definitely need to go back there with a tripod (these were shot with the camera on a rock wall) and a little earlier in the evening so that I can catch that blue post-sunset sky. Maybe catch some reflection shots off the Ohio river.

Both were shot in Aperture Priority mode at f/11 and ISO 100. Shutter speed for the city was 13 seconds and for the bridge, 30 seconds. I'm thinking that f/22 would be better next time.

Thanks Dave for starting this thread. It was a good kick in the butt for me to get out there and I love learning from what other people shoot.

  12. This bar (with the white tower) was jumpin' when I got there and is still jumpin' as I type. I can hear the music well from my balcony.

Sorry, I can't remember the name of the place...

Trainman - We were on the same itinerary on The Liberty in June and your thread has brought back great memories. The bar at the pier in Cozumel is the 1/2 Senior Frogs. DW and I had an afternoon drink there before re-boarding. Watching the people who had obviously been there all day was quite entertaining. I'm surpised that some of them were even able to make it back the ship! My added thanks for such a great and moving LIVE thread.
