  1. So when the ships dock at Cozumel, and we want to go to Paradise Beach do we just flag down a taxi? Does anyone have a rough idea how much a taxi would be and I assume they must take US currency since it's clearly a tourist area with many Americans. Thanks for any info

There's a taxi stand after you get through all the souvenir shops. They have all their fares clearly listed at the taxi stand on a large fare board. They do take US currency.

  2. For those of you who have cruised out of Galveston during Mardi Gras, how was traffic on the island and to the port? I didn’t realize that would be going on when I booked. We were going to stay in Texas City or somewhere similar to save a few dollars but I decided to book a hotel on the island instead when I found out just in case traffic was a nightmare (and surprisingly still found a cheap motel rate) Leaving out on Sat Feb 10th, so just trying to see what to expect.

We cruised out the same day as you in 2017 and had no issues. We stayed in Texas City the night prior. No traffic to fight.

  3. We normally stay a couple of times a year at the Chateau Lemoyne. Good location only a block off of Bourbon and convenient for activities in the Quarter. If you prefer being in the CBD, then we usually stay at either the Drury Inn or Staybridge Suites on Poydras.

It all depends on how convenient you want to be to what you have plans to do.

You can also see this link which references New Orleans hotels.

  4. I had a feeling that might be the Sonesta :) - gonna go with that, thanks SG !

And just a heads up for those who will choose to stay on Bourbon Street. There is a large re-construction project currently going on. Several blocks of the street are closed off. The sidewalks in those sections are open.

Currently they are working the area in front of the Royal Sonesta. It's a mess.

    Enjoy your stay.

  5. The Cajun Navy is a group that formed after the great flood in Baton Rouge in August 2016. They used their own boats to rescue people that were trapped in their homes.

They've been around since Katrina in 2005. My neighbor organized the group back them to do rescues in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish.

  6. Barrachina, absolutely! Their pina coladas are amazing. I don't even like coconut, and I've loved these on both of my visits to San Juan. Just be sure to stir thoroughly before sipping - they don't skimp on the rum!

For those who are touring Old Town prior to your cruise or if you are touring prior to your trip to the airport, they will store your luggage for the day for free. Nice perk and the Pina Colada's are great.

  7. Prior to Paul Prudhomme the best NOLA restaurants all had chefs from France. Paul started the eat local movement in the 70's which is the basis for most all food in NOLA today. Paul has passed but his restaurant and ideas continues. K-Pauls Louisiana Kitchen is at the heart of it all, it is in the quarter. http://www.kpauls.com/

Paul brought Cajun cooking to New Orleans. After 40 years, the New Orleans restaurants are still trying to catch up to the quality of restaurants in Cajun Country.

  8. How was getting up to Oia from the port? Did you DIY or did you take a tour? I looked and it seems like 4 cruise ships will be in port that day (2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon). We were considering doing the Greek celebration excursion but that goes to Pyrgos and I think we will just do our own thing in Oia.

We just returned from Santorini and took the boat to Oia from the Fira port. It was 15 Euros per person. It included your boat ride, a bus up from the port to Oia and a bus transfer from Oia to Fira. I would suggest getting to Oia as early as possible. It does get a little congested there. Take some time touring both of these unique towns. We walked down the donkey path from Fira to the port. Very different.

  9. We visited Chios the week of June 11th. We just got off the tender and walked their small sea front area and bought some wine and souvenirs. There were some nice restaurants along the shore. Some onboard toured their mastic villages.

  10. We took the X80 on June 17th. Real easy to find outside of terminal B. Right next to the taxi stand. There is an attendant in the booth selling tickets. 4.50 Euros. We were on the bus at 7:35 and at the Acropolis ticket stand for 8am. The bus drop off is 1 block from the south entrance near Haydrian's(sp) Arch. The return to ship is X80 bus stop is across the street on the Acroplis side of the main road. Real easy to find. We were 4 on the bus going to downtown and 4 on the return at 4pm.

Just as an FYI, you can catch the X80 bus and they will drop you off at the X95 stop near the port to get to the airport. 10.50 euros each.

We normally stay here 2 or 3 times a year. Nice hotel with large buffet breakfast and snacks and drinks on weekday nights.

Easy access to the French Quarter and a short cab ride to the port. It's on the St Charles Street Car line.

  12. Wow! Saint Greg you are a wealth of information! We are trying to escape Christmas drama this year and have book at NCL sailing Dec 23. Like Hilton properties but how often do you find yourself in New Orleans! We are bringing our adult kids and 12 & 14 yr old grand kids. For my hubby the WW2 Museum is almost the only reason for the trip. In fact we are doing the DDay Beaches with them in May 2018.

So loaded question where should we stay :)

I'm not Saint Greg but I would suggest the CBD/Warehouse District. It would be close to the WWII Museum for the hubby. Any of those hotels would be in a safe area for the kids. Aquarium and Insectarium would be close for the grandkids in case they are interested in that. Easy access to the Riverfront street car line to get to the French Quarter.. The French Quarter is not a bad walk from there either. The city will also be decorated nicely for Christmas. Fulton Street near there also has some nice displays.

Enjoy the city and spend a few days exploring.

  13. We tried EZ Air once and were unable to reserve seats. We could not learn what seats we had until we got to the airport and checked in. We don't like worrying about details, making connections, or some middleman screwing up so now we make our own air reservations online on the airline's web site. It is easy to do and we get exactly what we want. We don't ask our travel agent to do it for us as the airlines do not pay commissions to travel agents.

I'm having the same issues with my upcoming(30 days) flight to Europe. We can't choose seats on the international leg. I'll never use them again.

  14.

(And I could swear there was at least one other year that Emerald or Ruby did summer Caribbean. Or did a ship stay in Galveston all summer one of the years Princess was there )

Correct, Emerald was actually in Houston(Bayport).
