  1. It has seemed to me that, for whatever reason, there are a disproportionate number of Haven related threads relative to how many Haven cabins there are. And that is fine, BUT...

I am going to try to remember, once I get home (and I'm leaving Sunday!!) to post at least a short review of the Escape Bermuda cruise from a NON-Haven perspective for the masses who sail in the other cabins. I hope that posting this will compel me to follow through!

  2. Even after 2 cruises and months of hanging out on these boards! ;p

;pWe will be in a balcony room, and a young adult will be sleeping on the couch/bed. Is that comfortable or would you recommend that we ask for an egg-crate foam immediately? And if we don't get one immediately, is it unlikely one will be available if he decides after a night or two that he wants one?

    Thanks!

I am also wondering if Bermuda has much in the way of bugs (ie, do we need to bring bug spray), but I can find that out easily on my own, I think.

But feel free to weigh in on that, too! :)

  3. Hello.

Can anyone advise on how the comedy show works on the Escape? Is it every night? is it a different show each night or the same?

My son is a comedian and does gigs in Manhattan at several comedy clubs and I am sure he would like to go to the shows onboard.

Hi Stevetod! When are your and your son sailing on the Escape? My son will be sailing with us on 8/12, and he also does stand up in Manhattan - maybe they even know each other! David emcees a show in Queens and does stand-up at various venues.

  4. I get what OP is saying, and it is interesting. When I read "open bar," however, I immediately think only of the short cruises to Bermuda or the Bahamas or Cuba, where everyone gets free booze, not just those who choose a beverage package.

I'm always rather boggled by all the UBP posts on here. I'm not a veteran cruises - only been on 3. My upcoming November cruise will be the first one on which we've chosen the UBP as one of our "perks." I had absolutely no problem going onto the NCL website and looking up what the package included and didn't include. I read the part where gratuities would be added to my "free" perk. I understood that if I purchased the UBP I would still pay those same gratuities, plus the cost of the package itself, so yes, I was getting a free beverage package, but I was not getting free gratuities. It wasn't hard. Why are people always asking what's included, what's not, why isn't it really "free," etc.? I also understood that I could pay less for a Sailaway cabin and not have any free perks. I did the math and figured out how much more it would cost to choose my own cabin and then get the UBP as one of my perks.

I'm not exceptionally smart, and I figured it out.

    This.

  5. This is my third cruise, and I AM planning to bring the over the door shoe hanger because we will be 3 adults in a balcony room. It will be nice to have toiletries handy but not clogging up the bathroom sink area. I think that whatever other people do, it is most important to think about what makes the most sense for your personal situation. I do remember reading somewhere that bringing some duct tape (I think that was it) can be really useful for many applications...I have never done this, but this is my husband's first cruise, and I think he would like this tip! I think it wasn't a roll, just some stuck to something but removable if needed.

  6. Hello,

I have never been on a cruise before. I am planning to travel solo on my first cruise and essentially my very first vacation in many years. I have been exploring cruise blogs and sites for the last 6 months and have understood that traveling alone on a cruise can be a costly experience and I suppose there is not much one can do about that unless cruise lines become more accommodating of solo travelers.

I have decided to embark on the Norwegian Getaway in September (have not paid yet, but would like to do so in a few days). I am very confused about certain options and was wondering if someone can please guide me.

    1. I am thinking of choosing the cheapest balcony room, it comes without any promotions and I am not able to choose the room number or deck, is that a bad idea given this is my first time, I am concerned about being given an obstructed balcony or if I experience motion/sea sickness and I am not sure if certain areas of the boat may add to it should I be given a room in such a location. Therefore, is it better to pay up and get more flexibility (I am working on a budget).
    2. If I upgrade to the next level, I still do not get to choose the room but I become qualified to get two or 5 offers. However, adding the offers increased the total cost by $400 to $500 depending on the offers I choose, is it worth doing so? If I were to choose offers, it would be a wifi package and shore excursions. Is it beneficial to do so, or rather get the base price and pay as I go (if I did not upgrade, I would not pay for wifi but will participate in a few excursions)
    3. should one get the travel insurance from the cruise line or some other entity or avoid it completely?
    4. is there a website that may let me see what each port includes for free incase I did not want to venture out alone or participate in excursions.
    5. do they clean rooms everyday and provide toiletries?
    6. are tea, coffee, and juices charged? I am not a soda drinker and may or may not drink alcoholic beverages, I am an occasional drinker.
    7. should one bring cash, credit cards, or is there a different structure of payments on the ships?
    8. when shopping on ports, do I have to carry local currency?
    9. I hear stories about cell phone charges, is it better to completely turn it off or switch to airplane mode on the boat and what are the rules on land during port visits?
    10. Has anyone used airport transfers between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale? If so, how much are they?
    11. Norwegian blog has something about bringing a handbag for the last night to keep personal belongings, what is that about?
    12. I am very scared and anxious to be traveling solo on a cruise, any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you and I look forward to the comments and advice.

    2. The excursion credit is often not worthwhile if you want to be budget conscious....privately booked excursions are likely to be less costly. But as a new cruiser, you might be more comfortable using the ship excursions.

    3. Travel insurance is very worthwhile. Either through NCL or privately. Don't skip it.

    5. Yes!

    6. Specialty coffees are extra, otherwise, coffee, tea, juice (breakfast only?) are free. I think Iced tea and lemonade type drinks are also free.

    7. Room key is linked to your credit card.

    11. I think this is a reminder to keep some clothes for the last day as well as your morning toiletries out of the packed suitcases! I can imagine people packing up the night before, and having to leave the ship in PJs!

    12. There is a solo traveler's group on board with activities and get-togethers for solo travelers. I am not certain, but i would hope that this group would include solo travelers who aren't in the single rooms.

  7. And believe it or not, after going back and looking at the deck plans, THIS was our cabin for Thanksgiving last year. We were in 15156. We enjoyed the location very much right near the elevator/stairs and we were worried about the potential for noise but we never really noticed it all that much.

Thank you for posting this! I just noticed your response. I hope that you are better than I am at noticing responses!

We will have 3 adults in the cabin (myself, my husband, and our son) and hope that the extra room on the balcony will make it more comfortable for 3. BTW, do you remember if the bed was near the door or the balcony?

  8. I'm thinking of renting a Boston Whaler for a half day. How much in advance do I have to rent it (going in August)? Or is it too late!?! And what if we need to cancel due to choppier waters than we'd want to go out in?

Finally, is it ok to do if I haven't driven a motor boat before?

    Thanks!

  9. Is there a story line to either of the two shows - After Midnight and For the Record?

I know that one of them, at least, has been described as generally without a plot, just loosely strung-together songs. Is it true of both? I'd rather see something with a story!

    Thanks
