  1. I wouldn't say a minority view. A cruise ship to me is not a destination. Just a convenient and comfortable way to wake up somewhere different everyday without having to pack and unpack and rush,
After waking in St Maarten, St Thomas etc for the umpteenth time the luster is kind of worn off so having the ship as a destination once in while can be a good thing.

  2. We have never sailed without it. I’m wondering if I am doing it all wrong as I purchase a few weeks before cruise date. I also purchase cruise, airfare and hotel at different times. Mostly concerned about evacuation coverage. We sail at least 3-4 times a year. I am reading that most people use their credit card for insurance. Plus we are not married but I purchase the policy for us both. If someone in a similar situation can recommemd an alternative, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

if you cruise 3-4 times a year maybe a yearly plan would be cheaper for you.

  3. Past experience and knowing to deal with issues on the ship and not on Cruise Critic.

Brides are not related to prepaying tips and I don't recommend them. I think that actually is more on an insult.

    I've had a bride for 32 years and I highly recommend them.:p

    YMMV

  4. Dear StolidCruiser,

    A simple point..

Asking for Three Times a day service for the cabin PreEmpts.

Your State of NY in Rockland County has had an Emergency Sales Tax for Decades. But when does that cease??

Here in New Jersey we just got mega-shafted by the is Governor Murphy he is increasing our Fuel Tax begining in this October 2018. Notice how they swept it through on a week with so many gone on vacation?

Yes no Public Meetings for this..

With Carnival as the OP shows too. Cabin Service, CCL :NYSE/LSE wants to somehow start charging for Cabin Service. They have now even for Room Service, Water bought even Online has a Hefty 15 % Tip. Oh where does that tip go? I wager not to the Bagage Handlers delivering it!

    Hpoe that helps clarify.

I recommend before sending out your posts you do a bit of spell checking and maybe check your punctuation. An alternative would be quit drinking in the early afternoon.

I have a decoder ring that works pretty well. I can usually understand about 50 % of his post.

  5. OK. Here is my take. My wife gets those offers at my email and I do not. We have different last names. She has never booked a Carnival cruise, I book our travel. I am diamond she is platinum. I have booked before through a travel agent. I wonder if that is the reason they do not market to me directly. Cruise lines walk a very thin line when it comes to their relationships with agents. They try not to "undersell" agents with offers agents are not allowed to sell. Am I on to something here, or just throwing spaghetti at the wall?

What kinds of offers does CCL have that agents aren't allowed to sell?

  6. Every time I've cruised I price similar cruises on NCL out of NOLA, and found Carnival to be a better value. This is primarily because we do not drink. When I choose from among the other perks that NCL offers

    • FREE SHORE EXCURSIONS
    • FREE SPECIALTY DINING
    • FREE WIFI
    • FRIENDS & FAMILY SAIL FREE*

Carnival is the better value. I would love to try NCL but will not pay a higher price to subsidize the drinking of others.

If guarantees don't scare you you could always book one of those on NCL. They are called sail away rates and are cheaper since they don't include any perks.

There is usually a difference in price of about $200-$250 which goes to prove that you are paying for the drink package.

  7. I had a friend who was joining me on a California Coastal on Princess a couple of years back. She had to work and so could not make the initial embarkation port (Los Angeles), but Princess did allow her to join at the next port (San Francisco).

Of course, the difference from the Original Poster's circumstance is that both ports were in the U.S.

Where did your cruise end at?

Unless you embarked in Los Angeles and the cruise ended in San Francisco I can't imagine the cruise line allowing a violation of the PVSA.

  8. Being that the drinks and Casino are where cruise lines make a great deal of their profits, can't foresee that happenening.

Not saying it can't but highly unlikely.

Blerk is tryng to throw as much shade at the other cruise lines as possible to make CCL shine brighter.

Sadly not any one cruise line is better is every aspect. Each cruise line does certain things better than others.

I think for me where CCL really shines are their food choices outside the MDR.

  9. Husband and I did a Guaranteed Balcony on Oasis last year and ended up with a connecting room. Other than seeing the door there the first day, we never would have had any other indications that it was connected. Not a single issue. Point being - if it is connected, you’ll be fine!

we had connecting cabins on our last Oasis cruise and like you no big deal.

Only difference is with the connecting rooms we got a chair instead of a sofa.

I also like cabins near the elevators. No noise there either, at least none that bothered me.:)

  10. We usually book our own but one time we booked our flights with Royal Caribbean because the price was the same. Soooo glad we did because this was the time we were on Anthem of the Seas where it encountered that huge storm on Day 2, the ship was damaged and we had to turn back. When everyone else was scrambling to reschedule their flights to go back home, Royal Caribbean had automatically rescheduled our flights for us and had dropped off a letter with all the info in our stateroom. Didn't have to use the expensive roaming charges to call and be on the phone for hours with the airlines. On top of that, on Day 3, they had to delay our arrival to port, so again people had to reschedule for a 2nd time and incur rescheduling charges. This was a special scenario but it was nice to not have to worry about getting back home.

Wow that was great that they did that for you.

It's a shame they didn't do that for everybody.

We were on a Princess cruise that was shortened by 2 days (noro). We didn't buy our air through Princess but they had our air information from our check in paperwork and booked us new flights home on their dime.

They also let us use the phones for free and gave us all of our money back that we paid for that cruise and a percentage off another cruise.

Since we originally booked with Southwest were also able to get a credit for our cancelled flight to use for another flight.

  11. I haven't been on RC for a few years but last time we were on, shorts weren't allowed in the MDR and people dressed up a lot more on formal nights. On Carnival men can get away with Hawaiian shirts and Khakis on elegant night. On RC most men wear suits. My last Carnival cruise there were lots of guys with tank tops , basketball shorts and ball caps even on elegant night.

I enjoy the entertainment more on RC but think the food is better on Carnival. It's all subjective though. You'll have a great time. It's always fun to explore a new ship!

Most men were very casual on formal nights on our last 3-4 recent RCI cruises

  12. I really want both and I hope I don’t get the whine...any good tips/practices for handling the whine and still getting what you want. Leaving Sunday and traveling with my 11yo and without my husband (who’s much better at these types of things). Should I have $ ready...how much?
I sure wouldn't want to give extra gratuities to someone just to get them to do their job.

If they are complaining about doing their job they should take it up with their employer.
