I sometimes make soup with roasted pumpkin (either butternut or regular pumpkin). Depends what I feel like doing.

Yes I worked out I prefer roast pumpkin soup over just boiling it. Also cook with rosemary and other herbs.

Haven't made a pumpkin pie or gramma pie for ages. If lock down continues I might have to find a recipe.

Growing up Pea & Ham soup was a family staple in the winter months. Mum would make up a batch in a big steel pot (more like a bikkie barrel than a cooking pot) for the weekend & we would all get our fill 'til Sunday night. It was special soup that never seemed to runout - a bit more water & 30' on the heat & we were all good to go again. Good memories.

I used to love it especially using Christmas ham bone, unfortunately none of family eat.

Yes it has been cheap here too, so taking advantage of it. I made a pot last week with with butternut and then this week (Saturday) with kent. It was $1.50 kg. I tend to freeze some  too.

Yes I got 3 Kent from IGA last week @ 99c a kilo.

  5. Pies aside.

My grandmother taught me to cook and I have continued the tradition in teaching some of the grandchildren. My 16 year old one has helped me with the Christmas puddings since he was 5 - first time he was amazed that counting was included in cooking. I was cooking 6 puddings for family and friends so we did in 3 batches of 2 so we had to double mixture. Last year was so good having him to our 2 now - he did all the preparation still under supervision and he now ties the pudding (in cloth) as I no longer have the strength in my hands since being sick last year. Already booked him for this November, if we ever get out of lock down. I mailed him a book today to put a smile on his face.

    Stay safe everyone

Seriously??? That is more gross than the one with 2 pies. Pies are a beautiful, all inclusive self contained meals. You don't need to add anything to it.

I haven't had a lamington but isn't that a pastry usually served with tea?

Take the center of that thing and put it in a nice rustic bun or even focaccia and you have a robust meal, as it is...dog food.

Lamington is sponge cake dipped in chocolate and covered with coconut. I love but wouldn't spoil them with all the other good stuff.

Indeed, our freedom down here will not last forever, someone with covid will drift in.  Then it will be lockdown time for all.

Some of the locals will not handle it too well, they like to be out and about.

Yes we know the feeling. I am missing my family,  my bowls and the friendships I have. Phoning each other just not the same.

I am out and about, mask in pocket, lol. Golf today, lunch tomorrow.  I am not going to be incarcerated, we are not in lockdown, just masks inside shops etc.  Clubs, pubs all open.

Go enjoy yourself. You just never know when the idiots are going to escape lock down and effect other areas.

I came here by a similar path, booked on Celebrity Century, after a hiatus of about 7 years from cruising, was looking for what a white space was just near our cabin, to be honest as my health has plummeted and self isolation became the norm, long before Covid was even dreamt of, this place became almost my only connection with the outside world.

And for an anti social, introvert I have met some people who I have come to consider friends and when at times have gone AWOL, either because hospital called, strokes made it impossible to post, or just depression hit so hard, the couple who had my phone number or email quickly reached out to check if all was OK.

And they will never know just how much it meant to me.

Unfortunately I think my cruising days are all but over, but I hang around for the companionship.

Yes it has been a great place to meet new friends.

I have 3 cruises booked but beginning to think I will soon be only cruising in my mind.

I saw a documentary about ridiculously rich people in London and there was a real estate agent who caters to them. She said they always request two kitchens. One was for their personal chef to cook all their meals the other was a show kitchen. Even though it had workable equipment it was to never be used but as a display for invited guests😳

Latest craze in Australia is to have butler's pantry so they use it so kitchen always tidy, why bother as more cleaning.

I lived in Church St, Wollongong then Mt Warrigal, 72-76.

Re Thirroul, I remember ye olde Thirroul Leagues Club and Thirroul RSL.

Thirroul RSL is shops and Club Thirroul now owned by Ryde Eastwood. Without them the Bowlo would have been finished. I love my bowls there.

My brother in law and sister in law have lived in Ocean St, Thirroul for 45 yrs, nice area.

It has been great however we have 4 sets of traffic lights, a big housing estate with only one entrance and it gets priority on the traffic lights - it can take up to 10 mins to get onto the highway because of lights - now transport dept think best to get rid of our parking. They stuffed it taking out roundabouts and putting in lights.

When we lived in Wollongong, 72 to 76, there were some great pie shops like Guests. The gong was working mans country back then.

Yes it is a shame Guests totally went and Flemings Cakes in Thirroul changed hands - it took a while but they are doing ok now. Good takeaway coffee also.

Cake in it is easy just a cake mix (was told to use Greens, but we but the home brand for 70c) forget the eggs, milk or whatever, can or jar of fruit in juice, so far have tried pineapple and mango (if the pieces are too big run them through the blender) mix and spoon into the pie maker, add coconut, Macadamias, whatever takes your fancy. Mrs G likes banana bread, so do similar except the banana is too dry so you need the milk, egg, butter or water the cake mix calls for.

I also try to keep a tin of braised steak and vegetables or the such in the pantry, a quick meal in ye old Pie maker.

You might remember when they called Don Burke “The Lazy Gardner” well I’m the lazy cook.

I was hesitating to buy one, wasn’t sure if we would use it enough, kids gave it to me for Father’s Day last year, gets used a couple of times a week,  now thinking about getting one that makes small pies, mainly for cakes.

I use the cake mix with butter and a little milk to make my base for apple and sour cream slice. Thankfully I can get gluten free. I think I will have to get my pie maker out.

Yes lot of history in ye olde BB Bridge, but apparently some sculptures for display on the foreshore are being made from the old bridge steel.  It is a nice walk across the new bridge and back, done it a couple of times, nice views.  Hope you get out of lockdown soon, Premier is considering Wollongong, Shellharbour LGA's to come out out of lockdown.

Minced beef Lyle, you would like them.  Bit of horse on top, lubbly jubbly.

Great, when out of lock down here I come. Actually visit South Durras and BB twice a year as my grandparents and parents used to live there.

Shame the bridge has now gone as my grandfather was one of the early painters on her.

So I took a 40 minute drive north up to Ulladulla the other day and called into Haydens Pies, just south of Ulladulla on Princes Hwy.  They have been there years and have a great selection of pies, cakes, sandwiches, coffee, tea etc. They also have a reasonable selection of gf pies for me, albeit $7.50 each, pricey but good.  Highly recommended for your road trip people.

I will have to check out next time I am down there, if we get out of lock down.

United bought out Pie Face when it went bankrupt a few years go.

There are still some kiosk type outlets (Southern Cross Station in Melbourne has 2). But mostly through the servos.

One stand alone at Figtree near Wollongong

For the true pie connoisseurs, the month long Southern Highlands Pie Time celebration in June may be right up your alley

The pie trail is good and also a wine trail. They have maps with both on them. We liked Heatherbrae pies, they also do gluten free. A general store at Barrenjoey?  Was also good. There sausage rolls were a sausage in pastry roll. We have done it a few times as hubby loves his pies.
