Overall, How much is the DSC? If it can make up for such a poor base salary?

NCL should be ashamed.

It is my understanding that those who participate in the service charges earn a monthly salary of $50 to $100. The rest of their income comes from the service charges.

If true, Then who is truly stiffing the crew? $600 a year? Not even NCL could do that...could they?

Legally, the contract says:

The charge ,

which is automatically added to your onboard account and subject to adjustment at your discretion,

vs the FAQ

Should your concerns not be met with satisfaction you can adjust the charges.

The FAQ is an attempt to be the final word, hoping passengers never look at the contract.

This is the purposeful contradiction. But legally it isn't, the contract is binding the FAQ aren't really anything except a quick review.

and incentive programs that are funded in part by the service charge paid by each Guest. The charge ,

You haven guests are messier lol. I don't know you will have to take that up with ncl. I sail in a non haven suite and pay the same and I have no issue with it.

I'm not sure what the rules are in the EU or Italy but in the US, the taxes/fees are set by the government(s) in the ports used.

They should be equal based on a person, not the age of the person.

Because the cabins are bigger and you have the private pool deck area, etc.

But the crew working there have fewer cabins to deal with (I know that the Escape will have many more cabins than previous Havens) and a much smaller pool deck, is this not correct?

Again I don't see this as stiffing the crew. If they get a base salary, then the DSC is not really needed. If it adds to the overall pot, like a tip jar, then so be it.

Nevertheless...the policy to remove it is currently discretionary. At my discretion.

It is not a charge for 'good' service nor 'exceptional' service.

O,h good grief - Do you really need the link to NCL webpage of ' What's the service charge' again? It pretty much says who's in the DSC money pool. And the 'What about Gratuities' says who's not in it.

No not really. However can you link the sections that state its discretionary? And the parts that say it has to be ONLY for poor service they can't fix.

This is a contradiction I think. A purposeful one.

Why are you so concerned what others do with their money? Worry about your own.

It's OK... this discussion is interesting but will not in anyway be the deciding factor in whatever I do with my $. And the DSC is my money, not NCL's, that I choose to give for good service.

Good is subjective, of course.

Do you tip the customer service desk when you take off the DSC?

Why, should I? Now not much needs to be done at the customer service desk.

Don't forget breakfast, lunch and/or snacks; if one doesn't use the room service, specialty restaurant such as the Atrium cafe or brought there own food from port(s) - pretty much have to pay some DSC in the complimentary places.

You are correct, also like the butlers and servers when in the specialty restaurants, since not everyone uses them.

The Haven costs a higher DSC, correct? Is it worth the difference?

Then they eat in the buffet or O'Sheehans or the grills on deck - these are still staffed by crew in the DSC pool.

Yes I eat elsewhere on NCL. Other lines not so much so, but then again if they had the number of choices NCL has...

Have the UDP - the older more comprehensive one - that will likely lead to eating every night elsewhere.

Hate the buffet and NCL's MDR's are not that great or I should say have not been that inspiring to eat at.

Not everyone has kids on the cruise.

On NCL not everyone eats in the MDR.

They have never been part of the DSC pool.

Why? Because they get paid a decent (er) wage?

Just want to say thank you to Laura S for not deleting this thread yet. I came on here to learn about cruises and I appreciate all the advice, reviews, and pictures from everyone. This will be my last post ever. I proved my point that people will remove their DSC not bc they have a legit service problem but because they liars and cheaters and cheapos. They will say anything and do anything to hurt the crew so they can pocket just a few dollars. I will write a letter to FDR or who ever and let them read these post. Hopefully they will make it HARDER for them to get their refund.

I wish most everyone a happy life and happy future cruises.

Kids taxes are suppse to be cheaper. My daughters are always less and she sails for free. Maybe you were not charged properly the last time.

No I don't think this is correct. Kids have never been charged less taxes or fees, legally they can't be, its per passenger.

If anything MSC is overcharging passenger 1 & 2

No line on any cruise we have ever taken has charged less for kids.

Was looking into booking, but why would the first two passengers have different tax and port fees?

I know kids sail free but they do on other lines as well and I have never seen such a difference in port fees and taxes.

We always use cash but we always pre pay tips or DSC, as we have on this upcoming cruise with NCL.

Just wondering what would happen if the cash account stayed low.

Stuck to MDR, no Bar drinks, no specialty, no nothing?

So let me ask this to the people that remove the DSC. Why don't you go to customer service the very first day of the cruise and ask for the DSC to be removed?

Because that's not the policy.
