  1. I'm extremely allergic to mosquitos and I've had bad luck with mosquitos during all seasons in Fl and surrounding areas. Just bring some repellant just in case. I always think I'm not going to get bit this time and I get bit and I'm miserable. My bites swell up to the size of a half dollar or bigger and are super painful and itchy and last for weeks then leave scarring. But I still love tropical areas.

You leave Juneau and the glacier part of the day starts at 1:30 pm and ends around 7:00 pm. We are out on our balcony or on deck for the whole time. It is clam fjord waters with whales and the occasional bear sighting and more seals as you get into the ice.

Our favorite excursion from Juneau is the Glacier Explorer. You leave the ship and see the glacier up close and personal, the rejoin the ship after they finish their glacier watching. A few photos and recent Alaska cruises are on the links below.

Oh wow that sounds so cool. I'll look into that. So for my sailing, we booked a port side cabin. Since we do Juneau first, would the port side be better since we are going back down to the glacier? Or can you view on both sides? We are travelling with a toddler and after Juneau he will most likely be tired and want to nap.

  3. The itin says first Endicott Arms/Dawes Glacier (cruising), then Juneau arriving 7am. Does that mean we cruise by the glacier in the very early morning hours?

The itin on the website before you book says Juneau, then Endicott/Dawes, which timewise makes more sense, but on the map they provided after booking, it looks like Endicott/Dawes comes first, then you get to Juneau. For those who have done this, which comes first? Do you recall approx times?

Both Juneau and Ketchikan have earlier departure times. What excursions are worthwhile in such a short period of time? We did book with the special promotion for excursions, but now I'm realizing it's only for the first person booked and with four people total, and the inflated prices the cruise line charges, seems hardly like a deal.

Huh? I only have two options when I start a chat. Book a new cruise or existing reservation.  When did it change?

Yes it gave me those two options as well, and when I choose existing reservation, it then asks for my phone number. If I input it without dashes, it says it it doesn't understand me. Then it asks for my reservation number. Seems like it'd be easier to just ask for the reservation number to begin with. I'm going to try again. I have a toddler so it's hard to get on the phone and stay on hold for any length of time. Chat usually is easier for me, when it works.

  5. I agree. It's hard to find good fabric, but even in the shops. All the chain shops sell low quality crap. If you go to a local mom and pop shop you can find great things, but usually they don't do coupons or many sales, so the fabric will be expensive. I mostly make corsets now so I use mainly upholstery fabric, which you can find decent stuff in the chain stores.

  6. I don't think most of the frequent-flying world would agree with your reasoning. See here, for example: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travelbuzz/1630783-carry-baggage-etiquette-overhead-bin-versus-under-seat.html

Not sure why you linked that post. Exactly what I was saying, we only bring one carryon for the both of us, and each one of our backpacks go under the seat in front of us, freeing up room in the overhead for people who bring two carryons.

  7. Wow.

Consider someone like me who usually only brings on a purse (under my seat) and a small tote. Sometimes if I don't bring a small tote and I went shopping on my trip, I will bring the bag and put it above.

Are you saying I can't put one of those bags above without risk of some self-deputized vigilante smashing the crap out of it?

Yes. You don't want it go get damaged, don't put it out of your sight.

  8. If you guys follow the rules as I do, then you WOULDN'T be putting a small bag that could easily fit under your seat in the overheads. I don't see how you guys are trying to justify that. You are being selfish that way. My bf and I only bring ONE carry on between the both of us, and we each have a backpack that is quite large. We put those under the seat in front of us! I see many people who have bags much smaller than our backpacks put them up top. If you have more than a carry on and a personal item you are breaking the rules and you are bringing too much. If you went shopping and have a shopping bag in addition to your carry on and personal item you need to put that on your lap on on the floor by your feet.

So with our one carryon and two backpacks between the two of us, that would/should give us no guilt as too putting one backpack up in the overhead right? But we don't out of respect for others. Which sometimes those others put small shopping bags in the overhead.

  9. Posted earlier in the thread and have continued to read.

One comment, many of the travelers who boast about traveling with a carryon, large purse, backpack, etc. are often the people flaunting airline rules. It is getting annoying to have so many people bringing so much on board - so many carryon bags are bigger than airline regulations, and backpacks look like they have a week's worth of camping gear.

I really don't blame the traveler, the airlines are at fault. Many of us just don't overstuff carryon bags, but so many do.

Also, as I posted earlier, standard carryon bags are gate checked on many of the smaller commuter jets. Admittedly you don't have to go to the carousel, but still have to wait for ramp delivery. Might as well pack a regular bag ...... Have waited 20 minutes for a gate checked bag ....... Some of us don't have a choice on the type of flight available.

Finally, the size of the person makes a difference! Plus size travelers, big feet, medical needs, etc. can all make a carryon impossible!

Oh I couldn't agree more! We do carry on only, and bring a backpack each. Our backpack is our personal item and that goes under the seat! I hate seeing people put small bags that can fit under the seat in the overheads. I've even seen people put small shopping bags up there! If you do that, I'm going to smash it in the back with my airline allowed carry one roller. I love it when I see the flight attendants go through the overheads and take the small bags out.

  10. Can you make it with just a carry-on for a 8 day cruise?

Yes, bf and I SHARED a carry on, plus had a backpack each for an 11 night cruise. Still had plenty we didn't wear. Yes we dressed for formal nights.

  11. You can still go to the late seating even if you are on traditional dining. One of my cruises we had a large table and it was not full. There was a British lady and her mum that missed their early seating for whatever reason and since there was room, they were sat with us. I'd inform the head waiter if you know ahead of time, but it's not totally necessary. It would be helpful to the staff though if you did.

    Or just go the buffet.

One thing I have always missed out on while at Nassau is the Fish Fry. They open late and the only time I could have went there was when we docked same time as you, noon till midnight, but didn't know about it that time. The other time we left too early, as they usually don't open till 1pm and the service is slow, or what they call island time.

  12. I bought a bunch of the foam board at the Dollar tree and cut the pieces 8x10 and the larger pieces were 10x16 inches.

The little fat quarters are just folded and that is what is laying down on the bottom.

My scraps are in the blue cloth box that I picked up at Dollar Tree also.

I just Love being able to walk in and see the material and grab it without having to go thru all of the drawers and digging for the ones I wanted.

I saw the idea on Pintrest and decided I would give it a try. It really worked at least for me.

Have a great day sewing today everyone,

    Gerry

Great job on the sewing room organization! I did something similar for our pantry that I use as my hobby/sewing storage instead. I used boxes from the post office, cut them to size and folded the yardage around them. It took some wrangling of the wider width fabrics, esp muslin that is 100''+ wide.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but I took it a step further, and while I was putting the yardage on the makeshift bolts, I measured them out. Cut a small swatch and attached it to other swatches of similar fiber content fabrics. I pinned each swatch to a piece of cardstock and wrote notes on it. How wide, how many yards left, fiber content, etc. Than I hung them on my pinboard in my work room. That way I know what fabric I have and how much of it left. Just remember to update the info on the card each time you use some fabric. It's really helpful so you know how much you have so you can use it for a project or not. Also helps me to know which I have only small remnants left that I can use for trim or whatever.

Also I laid down a long piece of masking tape on the edge of my table and marked out the inches up to a yard, and marked out 1/4", 1/2" 1/3" etc yard too, just like how they have at the fabric stores.

  13. I'm assuming the scarves themselves are quite real, but the fabric is faux silk or faux cashmere??

Maybe faux as in fake designer, like knockoffs?

Scarves for me too, easy to find anywhere, easy to use back home, easy to give as gifts. My dad came back with a pile of scarves from China too, like the poster above. I love to look at jewelry too, but from local artisans, not fine jewelry, can't afford that. Perhaps accessories would be a better word.

I love hats but I have a stupidly small head, 6 3/4 so finding one to fit on a vacation would be near impossible. No one carries my size.

  14. That's what I figured...but really hoping they fit. The one pair should since they are a brand/size I usually buy.

I just got an email saying my order shipped. I will try and report back on the goods. Thanks for pointing out the sight for me. New clothes, and not have to feel guilty :D

How did you guys do? Did the clothes fit? Everything I got so far fit except for a pair of jeans that were too big. They are Diesel jeans so I will try to see if I can resell. Last order I got a pair of cool Guess snakeskin leggings, two pairs of shorts, a floral 90s grunge style dress, and a blazer from H&M.
