When we did it we were walking by and just asked for a couple of unopened cans...which we were handed with a smile.

That's wonderful!   a great way to save hundreds!   I can live without in room coffee and binoculars, room service for coffee and I have my own binoculars. and doesn't seem to be too many problems with reservations for dinner or excursions.  thank you so much!

We spent almost 40 years with P&O/Princess until our last cruise with them in 2015. We are now very happy with Vking. I suspect you will NOT be disappointed with the superior Viking experience.

If you are interested in some of the comparisons, you can check out blog, with daily reports on the 2015 Princess World Cruise and also the 2020 Viking World Cruise. I also have a few specific posts comparing the experiences.

Please note our blog is only a record of our travels and is not moneterised.

Lackcreativity stated all my thoughts to a “t” except we have never had any issues with getting dinner reservations or excursions we desired.  I will add a couple of things to keep in mind if you end up in a lowly “V”.

Unlike a “DV” the sodas in the fridge are not replenished, however if you ask during lunch hours at one of the bars for your pop of choice, they will hand it to you.  Once we discovered this, we quickly learned to refill the fridge ourselves.

On 3 of our 4 cruises we have received an offer to upgrade a week or two before sailing. This offer typically has worked out to be 50% of the cost difference between what we paid and the cost of the upgraded stateroom’s brochure price.  Sometimes this is a deal, other times not so much in our opinion.

For example, we caught a great promotion on one of our transatlantics which was sold for $1999pp for a V.  Just before sailing we were offered an upgrade to a PV but the cost difference was almost $1000pp due to the low initial cost we paid. However, when we sailed on the Far Eastern Discovery cruise, the stateroom price we paid was not reduced (instead the promo was “free” air and a double category upgrade). So officially we had paid for a DV.  The offer we received (and accepted) to upgrade to a PV was only $199pp. We decided that for less than $17pp per day we would see for ourselves if the PV was worth it. Unfortunately, DH and I came to different conclusions.  He loved the sofa and a bit more space. For me it was worth the amount we paid but not paying full price for it.

Hope you will find Viking as wonderful as we have. We are hopeful that they won’t change much as we move into a new post 🤞 COVID world.

Thats a great idea on the sodas!  can you tell me if they are cans or bottles and im assuming they are unopened?   thank you! new to Viking,

    Hey @red4u2!

So I asked my steward about this, because I was honestly confused about it all. Apparently, the new beds were all installed during the wet-dock about a year ago (I think December 2018?). However, it just doesn't have that "sinking into it" feeling that I've had on all of the other luxury beds. This is the first ship I've been on where they add a mattress topper/pad thing on top of the mattress (that they then put a sheet over). The whole bed feels just the slightest bit firmer (and maybe the slightest bit bulkier) overall. However, I've slept pretty well and you can always get a feel for the bed, and then probably tell your steward if you want the pad taken off, or what not.

Also, I think having a queen set-up and a twins set-up does incur different bedding options, but it was a little unclear to me and I didn't want to keep asking my steward more questions because he was pretty busy. But definitely get a feel for it first before making any decisions and then chat with your steward. They have been very accommodating throughout our time. Regardless of what happens, I really hope you have a wonderful cruise and wish you the best! Please let me know if you have any additional questions of the Royal Princess!

Oh my gosh!!!   Thank you So very much!!! How very kind of you to go out of your way to ask!!!

Hoping the rest of your travels are fun and safe!😀

  5. Thank you for all the great info!

I do have a question about the beds though, I've been reading on other threads that most all of the beds are the new Princess luxury line now, however you mentioned that yours was not.

I have an upcoming cruise in a couple of weeks and I am concerned now that is still the old bed.  Booked a balcony.

The old ones were brutal on my back!  Any clarification on this would be fantastic!!

    Thank you!

A few weeks ago I booked a short getaway Cabo cruise set to sail February 1, 2020.  It's been a while since I've cruised so I just decided to take the easy route and book everything directly through Princess.  I decided to book everything I wanted to have for this cruise online and not worry about anything.  I went into the spa options and low and behold there was the Enclave $99/cruise!  Yes, exactly what I wanted, but decided to wait a while to pay for it (like a week).  Everyday I check all the stuff onboard and there is the Enclave.  Finally go to book/pay and the Princess Web pages have been updated and guess what, no more Enclave!! What?  So I called Princess yesterday and they assured me it could be done, on line for almost an hour, told to call back today after 9am Cali time.  Call back today... was told this has never been an option, must always book after boarding.  I explained it had been an option and that I was even pleasantly surprised to see it, but now its gone!  So if you've actually made it this far through my small rant, has this happened to anyone else?  Have you ever booked the Enclave prior to boarding?  I know it was there and now wonder what would have happened had I paid for it... would it have just disappeared?  Thanks for any input! 🙂

Im on the same cruise as you are, I booked the Enclave online and then the next time I looked a few days later it says so sold out, 😮

I was on two (B2B) Cabo overnights on Royal in October.  The shoreside tenders ran all night, on a very limited schedule during the wee hours, but they indeed operated all night long.

You didn't ask, but I'll give you another tip or two as well.

    - Early tenders were very (very, very) busy.  The ship finally went open tender about 3:30 after tender number 88 had been called. I suggest going ashore a bit later to avoid a long wait for a tender.  If you're traveling on an independent tour, booking before 4:00 probably means a lot of waiting to get ashore.  Most other ships leave the port by late afternoon leaving the town free for Royal passengers.

    - If not looking for night life, going ashore the following morning might be wise.  There were no waits for tenders, and indeed no tickets needed, the following morning.

    - If you insist on going ashore 'early' and independent be aware that distribution of tender tickets started at 7:00AM and that folks were lined up long before 6:00 to be 'first' in line.  I wasn't there for that purpose, just getting my first coffee of the day from the IC and wondering what all those people were lined up for . . .

    Enjoy

Thank you so much for the info!!!     Exactly what I was needing!     First day going to wait for the rush to be over and maybe head to the Soundbar on Medano beach....Next morning leave the ship early for a 830 whale watch tour.

Hopefully the big push will be over by then.

    thank you again!😀

  8. Hi Everyone,     searched the boards and cannot find the answer.

Will be on the Royal in a few weeks for the 5 day Overnight Cabo cruise.

Arriving at 11am on a Monday and Depart at 1 pm Tuesday.

Does anyone know the last tenders times back to ship on Monday night ?     and more importantly what time in the morning on Tuesday the Tenders will start running back to the marina?       Trying to plan shore excursions with an outside company.

    thank you!😀

Every ship but Royal/Regal has the Princess Luxury Bed and Regal/Royal should be at 100% soon.  Therefore have built-in top sheet.  Unless like @TM you don't want the duvet.

I see the Royal recently was refurbished in 2018...didnt they upgrade the bedding then?    Have an upcoming Feb 1st 2020.     Thank you!

Not much directly near the Doubletree.  Supermarkets and drug stores sell liquor...and there's a Vons supermarket on Gaffey and 13th...but that's several blocks from the Doubletree.  There are a few small liquor stores a little closer--along Pacific between 22nd and 18th...

Near the cruise terminal, there is a liquor store--Ocean Market--at 233 N. Harbor--virtually directly across the street from the cruise terminal.

I see you've been giving great advice here.  Do you know if that store mentioned sells diet soda as well?  Thank you in advance!
