I eat gluten free but I am NOT celiac.  So minor cross contamination isn’t a major worry for me.  But I can’t eat like bread or pasta, etc. without major gastrointestinal distress.  But a tiny amount isn’t a big deal.  Yet I don’t need to be forced into 100% GF meals like poor celiacs because I have found sometimes they are full of other things that cause me issues.  I think I read someone say she was similar and they brought her special breads at dinner which is great.  But I guess this means all the ship pizza is out?  And any sandwiches are too?  So no chance of a grab and go sandwich?

We recently saw gluten free pizza offered on Lido deck on Grand Princess. I would guess one could also order it at Alfredo's or Gigi's. Don't be afraid to ask.

One of our dog friends is doing just that ...

Driving from SF Bay Area up to Canada thru to Alaska and explore in a converted minivan. I'd go but not great at car camping. Will still be a summer to remember / bucket list trip

Back in 2017 we took a long (7 week) camping trip from our home in Northern California to Fairbanks, Alaska. We traveled from California through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana and then up through Alberta, British Columbia, and Yukon before finally reaching Alaska. We greatly enjoyed our time in Alaska but found traveling through Canada to be amazing and beautiful. We saw things we will never forget and it remains as one of the highlights of our travel - despite the fact we are about to board for our 23rd cruise. I am envious of your friend's trip. You really should go.

We also do multi-week camping trips here in the US as there is much to see here in our own country. It's insanely diverse as to the geography. Here is our "Big Rig" that we take on trips of this sort. A door on each side with a queen bed in between and a hatch on the back for my cooking supplies. (I do the cooking and my wife does the dishes. Works for both of us.)

  3. Access for one device just means one device at a time. I will use the access on both my phone and my tablet but can only be logged onto one of them at a time. As for multiple device access when sailing as a solo: I really have no clue but doubt that's the case.

  4. Just checked for the infamous barcode. We sail in 11 days. No sign of a barcode. However, I am very happy to say the app opened in maybe 15 seconds. I closed it and tried again and it still opened very quickly. A vast improvement.

Edit: Okay, I take it back. I do have a Boarding Pass with a barcode. It says "Check-in Window 10:30 AM - 2:00 PM

Completely disagree with OP. We did the land tour to Denali and Mt McKinley Lodge. Loved everything about it. The train was wonderful. Yes, the accommodation isn’t luxury but it was good and we had a couple of lovely meals. Also love the Captain Cook in Anchorage…great hotel with wonderful dining.

The server on the train made me his "Moosey Mary"

Mine took 2:20 to get to my cruise…20+ seconds to get past the logo screen & another 2 minutes to open my cruise’s info…mine is considerably slower after the update.

We’re 11 days from boarding but don’t see an OceanReady boarding pass…does anyone have any experiences with these? Are these only for those in the Blue lane who need to pickup Medallions at the port which doesn’t apply to us having received them at home to be in the Green lane.

That's the infamous barcode that nobody anywhere or anytime ever asks to see. Don't worry about it at all.

  7. It's not a bug, it's a feature! 🤪

Downloading the update now. Perhaps it will work well. Other than the slowness I haven't really had any issues with the new app. Heck, other than right at the beginning I didn't have much in the way of issues with the old app.

Edit: Okay, the new app got past the initial Sea Witch screen in about 13 seconds. However, it then took more than a minute to finally stop having the "loading circle" on a greyed out screen. It did finally load but that was really a long time. That is definitely a step in the wrong direction.

Interesting, as they always look at my medallion and read the date before giving me the nod to board.

Weird. At the kiosk outside the ship we just flash the Medallions at them and they nod. Boarding the ship we have to place them on the scanners. They look at their tablet and then at us and nod and we board.

I don't really know why, but I would prefer our names and the ship and date showed. However,  these holders are extremely secure (it's a little bit of work to get the Medallions in the holders and they fit very snugly) and they have a clip on the back. My wife sometimes uses the clip but often just keeps her Medallion in the tiny little bag she carries with her tatting in it. I keep mine in my pocket and we both find the clip on the back very convenient to hold onto when actually needing to scan the Medallion.

I thought the medallion was in place of the cruise card! 😱

Amazon have a sale on until 25/03/24, so I have bought my medallion holders.

I don’t know what these look like on reverse, but the printing around the outside of the medallion, which is name and date, needs to be visible when boarding the ship.  I wear the sports band sold on Princess, so convenient to have it on your wrist.

Not really. We have never had an issue with our Medallions in Air Tag holders and the name, Ship, etc. don't show with the ones we use. Count us with the people that leave our Passports in the safe. The only time we would take them ashore is if the ship announces it as a requirement. In some ports the ship will collect passports for local officials to check but they return them to us later.

Last year when we were there you could barely even find parking in Talkeetna and the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge was running $460 per night before taxes and fees.  A hotel that is nice by Alaska standards, but we would not consider it to be any better than the Princess Wilderness lodge about 20 miles or so from Talkeetna one can book independently of a tour from about 200 to 250 per night.  The main attraction for both is proximity to Talkeetna and a good view of Mt Denali when it is out.

When we did our 7 week camping trip to Fairbanks we were in our little teardrop trailer. Every once in a while we got a room for the night and one of the places we booked was a B&B not far from Talkeetna. It had the advantage of not only being very near to Talkeetna but also very near to the Denali Brewing Company. They do, of course, have a brew pub in Talkeetna but we enjoyed visiting the actual brewery and having beers at a table outside and talking with the locals.

They could tell I was 21 or over!

    How’s that?  🤣

If the Medallion had your account flagged as under 21 years of age you still couldn't order alcohol. It doesn't matter how old you are if the system "thinks" you are under age it won't allow the transaction.

  12. Having been married for a very long time I am used to sharing a bed. When I traveled for work I was never happy sleeping alone as it just felt "weird". We have the bed on the ship setup as a Queen. Many years ago we had a King (which was great when our boys were little and they attacked me in bed) but have no real need for that much real estate and gave it away to someone when we moved to a different town at one point. That would have been about 45 years ago and we have been sleeping on a Queen since then. I'm kind of used to it. 😉

This is one of my favorite Princess shows. I’ve seen it three times and would be very happy to get to experience it once again. It was supposed to go to the main theater when the Island was retrofitted but it would not be the same. I suspect it is not there.

The one and only time we sailed on Island Princess (2016) they did have On The Bayou in the main theater. I watched it and it was definitely not nearly as good. It wasn't designed for that type of stage. I don't know if they still have it or not. Hopefully they figured out that it doesn't work nearly as well on a regular stage.

  14. Given all the comments regarding the phabulous Champagne... Does anybody have an actual copy of a current wine list with prices? Something that shows what is available by the glass and how much it is? I know the Plus fare offers wine that can be ordered by the glass that isn't simply called "Merlot" or "Cabernet Sauvignon". Even it is "Bob's Dago Red" it has an actual name and an associated price per glass. It's really annoying to ask for a wine list and be handed the "Plus" wine list that just lists generic labels rather than something that shows a name and price.

So far, we've only done one cruisetour, and it was great. Room we had at the Denali lodge wasn't spectacular, but it was perfectly comfortable.

Our first time at the Denali lodge we were on the second story and our window looked out over the river behind the lodge. There was a small "island" in the river and we watched a mother moose and her calf on the island from our window.

Unfortunately people will often book these rooms who do not need them.

I would escalate this with Princess and ask them if everyone booked in a handicapped room really needs it.

Yes. You get people who walk with a rollator who book these cabins. Then you get someone such as our oldest son who can't walk or stand at all and there are no cabins available that a wheelchair can even fit through the door.

Seward is great with lots to do especially the all day Kenai boat tour and Exit Glacier.

Don't forget the Seward Brewery. We were walking around Seward (long camping trip - not a cruise) and my wife's face lit up and she said, "There's a BREW PUB!!!" 😂 We had a good lunch with good beer and bought one of our sons a tee shirt with the brewery info and the saying, "Stop Drinking Shitty Beer!" on the back.
