Cool Cruiser

Cool Cruiser (2/15)

  1. I am usually ok on a cruise just using Ginger Chews and drinking one ginger ale a day, but I go prepared with relief band (worked on my 9 year old grandson), and sea bands. The first time I used Bonine I was sick in the hotel room before even leaving. I used trans derm scopolamine a few times until I figured out why I was extremely sick after taking it off (severe withdrawal, icky!) I recommend trying any drug before you leave. Also, go to a low deck midship if it is really rocky.
  2. This is bad news for me. I always book an inside midship lower deck cabin, because I get motion sickness I pay extra for that choice.
  3. I carry Chimes ginger chews original flavor and drink ginger ale. Have a ginger chew before I anticipate a problem. Have also freely dispensed them to fellow passengers. On a recent excursion in a mini-bus, a new acquaintance was feeling very sick. She had a ginger chew and was feeling fine within a few minutes. The chew package is a little hard to open, so sometimes I carry one out of its package in a baggie for easier, quick use, Other brands are available, but these work for me.
  4. I buy a can of waterproof spray and do our fabric sport shoes, my hat, purse and his daypack. Dry outside or in garage for overnight and we’re good to go.
  5. From the HIA info on my upcoming cruise: “Signature Beverage Package part of Offer has a daily limit of 15 beverages and only includes beverages priced at $11.00 or less. Guest cannot pay the difference between limit and beverage amount.” Some of you were able to pay the difference though? My daughter would like the HIA. She will have her 6 year old son in her cabin. How is it charged if the second guest is underage? Alaska 7 day on Nieuw Amsterdam.
  6. I am also doing this cruise this Spring. I wanted to take our friends to the Milan Duomo rooftop. You can buy tickets that take you up by elevator, but you have to do the stairs down 251 steps with no handrails. So we will be skipping that. We did it many years ago when we were younger, and it was wonderful, but now it isn’t worth the risk of a fall. I tried working out the times for sightseeing on our own, but UniWorld says we can only find out the schedule after we arrive at the hotel. I did ask and the city sightseeing only goes to the outside of the castle, so we will try to go inside on our own. As to wardrobe, I’ll be wearing black pants and a blouse to dinner, tops a little dressier for the welcome and goodbye dinners.
  7. Does the Nieuw Amsterdam have soft serve ice cream machines in the Lido? I know that regular scooped ice cream can have nut products transferred via the scoop or the water bucket they use to rinse the scoop between flavors.
  8. Thank you. I didn’t intend to cause controversy. Obviously. Peace out everybody. I am getting off your lawn now.
  9. Thank you both. We were assigned any time dining, which I was able to change to early fixed dining through customer service. Yes, we will fill out the necessary forms well ahead of time, thanks for mentioning that. Our grandson is well educated about his allergy and would not eat anything without checking first. He doesn’t need special foods, just items without nuts. My goal is to identify food that is ok for him so that he will not feel left out. He has a little brother who does not have any allergies. The brother is also great about asking if something has nuts, looking out for the older one, which is very sweet! If the Lido manager can point out or give us a list, that will be a fabulous start (we would confirm with the server, too).
  10. Well, this is why I hesitated to ask the question and why I asked specifically for practical advice. No, I do not mean to imply that no one on the ship can have nuts. That would be ridiculous and not be practical. I know that others have dealt with allergies and that we can take precautions. I appreciate the advice to consult with the Lido manager. My grandson will always have an epipen on him although thankfully we have never needed to inject him. Now, how do I have this post removed?
  11. We have booked an Alaskan cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam for August. Our 9 year old grandson has an allergy to all nuts. We have fixed dining, and I am comfortable with working with our waiter. Question is how to be sure in Lido and other venues. Practical advise from others would be appreciated!
  12. Yes and there are coat hooks already on the wall that can hold heavy items. Otherwise you can use the clothesline in the shower.
  13. I am on a Nieuw Amsterdam southbound Whittier departs 7:30 pm Hubbard Glacier cruising 3:00-6:00 Glacier Bay 8:30-6:30 Skagway 7-9:00 Juneau 8-5 Ketchikan 11-7 Scenic cruising Inside Passage Vancouver it would be useful to know dressy nights so I may book specialty restaurants. Am currently open seating for our family of 6, but have emailed HAL to change to early as we have a child with food allergy and want the same waiter every night and early enough to see if he has an allergic reaction before he goes to bed. No response yet, one week waiting.
  14. Thanks for your suggestion. I had planned to go in the day before until I saw the cost of the hotel rooms. For my family I need two rooms and that’s $1100 at least for a decent place. It will be my birthday, so I’m not going to stay in a dump, And there are lots of those at $300. However, you are making an excellent point since the first two full days are sea days and we would literally miss half the cruise if we miss the ship. So back to plan A which is to go to a day ahead. I appreciate your input. Unfortunately, the bus only makes a one hour stop at the Alaska wildlife Center. My husband and I have been there before, and I believe we spent way more time there than that. Plus we will have the grand children and this is an educational experience for them. I am sure we will be able to find an alternative.
