  1. Your Compass scans again Ken: Interesting to see the reference to Make A Wish and their 'Wishes at Sea' programme. I'm hoping that this may be a regular cruise activity, and not a special one off for the cruise you were on.

One of our sons is the president for Make A Wish (Brisbane South East Branch) and at 33 years old he's been a volunteer for the past 13 years. We've done our bit supporting him and the foundation in those years, but it would be a special privilege to do so at sea.

On our 4 RC cruises there has been the wishes at seas event, selling T-shirts and the walk ( one 1 the walk was cancelled due to weather). On one cruise (Cruisin Country in 2011) over $7000 was raised.

We always support this cause, and since we already have the shirts, we make a donation & not take a shirt.

  2. We did ship tour (Rhapsody, so berthed in Cairns port) which was a bus to bottom of Skyrail, rode up to top*, had about an hour or so of free time for shopping etc and then caught our bus back to ship with a short city tour included. Back on board in time for (late) lunch.

If you go to Kuranda, try a mango or banana smoothy from the store there near where you exit the Skyrail :)

Note: this was our 2nd day in port as we overnighted in Cairns. The 1st day we did a long day tour (ship's tour) up to Daintree which was a great experience.

    * we had preferential boarding of Skytrain as we were on 'official' tour

  3. One day they may enforce the rule that you can be denied boarding if caught smuggling.

Do that to a few people and it would stop pretty quickly.

Agree 100% - turn them back at the pier, no refund on their cruise fare and keep their liquor. I am in the process of becoming a shareholder in RC. As an 'owner', albeit a small one, I think that taking a stand on this issue will be of long term benefit. The smugglers, who almost universally claim it's not because they are cheap, will then need to decide if they really want to take a risk in order to get their kicks from breaking the rules they agreed to abide by.

  4. The drinks are SO expensive on the cruise..... Alcoholic and non.... Could easily spend $300+ more on just drinks so I think they should allow some drinks. Glad to see the 2 bottles of wine now.

Really - I think the drink prices are quite reasonable compared to bars and restaurants on land. Never even considered smuggling alcohol or soda or water on - I think a bigger problem is the cost of the cruise itself - been trying to work out a way to smuggle extra people on to reduce the costs :) Surely RCI wouldn't object to an occasional stowaway.

People will always want to break rules - what's amusing is the rationale they use & the need to 'boast' about it.

  5. On Radiance in NZ last week, wi-fi worked wherever I tried on ship on i-Pad & i-Phone. Something like $50 for 90mins. Logged on, downloaded email, logged off and wrote replies and then logged on again to send - made most of the minutes. Also used the wi-fi to make calls on Tango, and access FB.
