All great suggestions, I would add Sue Grafton’s Kinsey series and Robert Craig’ Elvis Cole series both about private detectives  - love them.

Dani hope you are doing ok

    Agree on all.
I know people love James Patterson but I just can’t get into his books.  I think it’s because a chapter is only a page or two; interrupts the flow for me. I like a book I can really get pulled into.  A few more: Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta series, Scott Turow’s Kindle County series and

Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware series.  Also just started Steve Martini’s Paul Madriani series - interesting so far.

Oh, can’t forget Diana Gabaldon Outlander series.

Drove down Coastal Highway 1 to little town of Gualala (maybe a place Laura of John/Lala would like) 😉 Lunch of fish and chips with great view, then stopped along the way back for this view.  Thought Bucky's sweatshirt was appropriate. 😄    Sea birds enjoying some "rock time" as well.

You’ve sure had some beautiful scenery on this trip. Thanks for sharing.

how is the sun glare with kindle as I do majority of my reading outdoors, either on my patio or on the beach.

I get a bit of sun glare, but mine is about 10 years old.  I have no problem with it at the beach may be because I’m usually wearing some kind of hat.  DH has a newer version, I think it’s called PaperWhite?  His had less glare than mine.

My SIL loves her Kindle but I guess I am still "old fashioned" and prefer to hold a book in my hands.    Especially when doing a favorite past time of reading on the beach on a beautiful sunny day.      There is a wonderful consignment book shop I go to wherever we are "down the shore".    I stocked up last fall and have a bag full of books to take back to them in June.    We will be back our beach house for the month of June, cannot wait to get there.   The current renters leave on Monday, May 31st and June is the only month it is not rented as we love June at Spray Beach, LBI, NJ.

Stay well and stay positive 😍

Sure hope it warms up...crazy spring weather this year.

I felt the same about wanting to hold a book in my hands and turn the pages, so I resisted getting a Kindle for several years.  Finally gave in about 10 years ago and now I love it, especially being able to have immediate access to an unlimited library.  My absolute favorite feature is the ability to download a free sample to see if I like the book before buying it.

    Today started "routine" ....

DH met a long lost friend in the morning, and in the afternoon I was supposed to meet a friend for coffee at the nearby mall -- kind of "tit for tat" 😁

5PM. The danger of rockets "flying" started to rise in the region, and the friend called to cancel. She had polio in childhood, is walking with a roller and was afraid that at the mall she will miss the public shelter [should the need arise]....

And, indeed, rockets started flying.... and still are.

We just finished preparing for the night our shelter room, which was full of toys, old baby carriers and other grandkids' "paraphernalia"... Hoping no sirens will sound during the night -- I'm too old for this😢

    Stay safe.

DH recently found one of his BFF from elementary school on FB.

The guy left Israel for Miami more than 40 years ago. He arrived more than 2 weeks ago, quarantined and today they finally met, in his rented apt. just on Tel Aviv's main beach.

It seems that he cannot live without seeing the sea 😁

That's from his balcony [and from US embassy in Tel Aviv 😉] --

Looks great.  It is not just the pavers we have in common, we also have the same stairs, and liner too.  Great minds.  We never put a ladder at our stair edge, but one day we could.

Did you use the large rocks dug from the pool, to make a line along the back edge of of the bush?

Some plastic furniture for this year could work well and can be extra chairs and table for next year.

Yes, the large rocks were used as a retaining wall along the back.  Just woods behind us, but it makes for a nice sight line from our side as well.

Agree that plastic furniture could be used as extras in the future so not a terrible waste of $$.  Better than spending a lot on something we don’t love, just because it’s available.

  8. It’s finally done.  Took longer than expected because of the rocky soil around here.   DH had to resort to pulling out the jackhammer for several of the post holes.  We chose white vinyl fence along the front edge, where the driveway is, for privacy.  Next up is fence around the mechanicals, landscaping & outdoor furniture.  We may end up with bargain basement stuff this year as shopping at the patio furniture stores has taught me that everything is on back order, due to pandemic mfg’ing delays 🤷🏻‍♀️.  Here are a few pictures of the process, from tree removal last June to now.

  9. Today is a great day. Our baby, youngest DD, earned her Master’s Degree in Business Admin (accounting) last May but didn’t get to have a graduation.  Today was 2021 commencement & 2020 grads were invited to participate.  It was staggered appointment times and they were only allowed 2 guests.  Tonight we’re taking her along with middle DD, SIL and 2 little granddaughters to Flemings to celebrate. It’ll be our 1st time inside a restaurant since Feb 2020.  It’s times like these that make me truly dislike oldest DD and her family living in PA.

We are going out tonight for Cinco De Mayo, one of our friends is playing with his Salsa band , he has been playing professionally in Dallas for about 60 years .

Totally forgot to mention during the music conversation, but I absolutely love salsa music.  It’s why we love Boleros on RCI ships.

I can relate to going through, and disposing of a lot of "stuff" after my mother passed away.  Fortunately, she had eliminated much after my dad passed, but there was still a lot.

One of the last things I am still sorting through, a year and a half later, is photographs.  Many of those they had from trips to Europe, or cruises that just had scenery went first.  Photos with them in get narrowed to the best of the bunch.

Historical family photos still get saved.  One project I have been working on for the past few months, is to prepare a family history book with ancestor photos and a narrative of each of their lives.  I started it because my early millennial son was interested in his roots.  It has been interesting pulling together the stories from old family and historical documents.

Anyone else ever done a family history project?  Any tips on how to enhance the photos more, before getting them published in a book?

I love old photographs like this and have quite a few that are in pretty good condition for how old they are.  There used to be a camera/photography shop around here that did photo retouching. I don’t know if these type of places are even around anymore with everything being online & digital nowadays, but might be somewhere to start?
One of my main projects when I retired was to get our photos organized into albums & out of photo storage boxes. It’s been 8 years and still not done!  But it is a daunting & distracting task.  Mostly sorting & choosing the best ones ( which to keep out of 10 prints of the same thing LOL).  And that doesn’t even count all the ones from our phones that aren’t even printed yet.
Best of luck with your project!

Large power outage here, with over 5,000 rural customers without hydro . Thankfully the automatic farm generator kicked in for our place. My mom was going to bed and Sharon was retiring for the evening as well.  That means I didn’t have to go and turn on their generators.  Power should be back by midnight. 🤞

    Big day tomorrow.

    • Mom goes back to the DR to check her eyes.
    • It’s Owen’s birthday, the big 14.

Happy Birthday to Owen today 🎂!

Even Boomers don't want their parents stuff. We have no interest in the china, those old photos and all the other junk they were saving "for us to throw away".  It would have been more considerate if some pre-purging had been done. :classic_biggrin:

Exactly.  It may be hard to accept but a lot of that stuff will likely end up in a dumpster.

We just had to move my 90+ year old mom out of her apartment into a full nursing home. Spent two hours yesterday shredding  her monthly bills, investment statements, et al from 2007 -2008. I'm keeping all the sympathy cards she got after my dad died that she had saved from the late 80's.

The only reason I didn't get to 2009 etc. was that the shredder broke. Amazonie is delivering a new one tomorrow.

When we cleaned out my Dad’s house last October, found that he’d kept every tax return he ever filed going back to 1953!  That plus all the “important” paperwork (ie: insurance claims, etc) in triplicate was just too much to shred. We ended up burning it in batches in our fire pit.  I can understand wanting to let your children decide which of your treasures they want, but maybe ask them now instead of them having to sort through it all at a difficult time.

  15. Today was spent installing more pool fence. We’re about 3/4 of the way done but at the mercy of the weather. It drizzled all of last night so today we worked in a muddy, chilly 49 degrees. We’re also in a time crunch of getting this done before we leave for FL next Tuesday.  Would not be comfortable taking off for 3 weeks with just the temporary fencing up.  I’m done for the day and looking forward to my 🍷

Bucky enjoys doing electric work, drywall, (sort of on painting), especially any kind of wood work.  Ask him how he feels about plumbing (even though he does it) and he pales.  Hates plumbing work!!

Same for Andy. Hates doing any kind of plumbing. His favorite thing is painting - interior, exterior, doesn’t matter to him.

I am one of those specimens, but almost fully reformed now.  I usually just hire someone, unless I think I will enjoy doing something (like home automation).  Every now and then, I slip into my old ways thinking that I can save a few bucks by doing it myself.  Such was the case yesterday with changing a leaking cartridge in a Moen kitchen faucet.  Should have been one of those fairly simple, hour or less jobs to do before selling the house.

After about an hour of swearing and grunting, I finally got the old cartridge out and the new one installed.  Got the handle all reassembled and then...nothing.  No water flow at all, either hot or cold.  Took everything apart, ensured nothing plugging any of the valve ports, reassembled ensuring that I strictly followed the instructions (they were more of a guideline the first time since I've done this before) but still nothing.  I was constantly under the sinking turning the water off and on and of course screwed up once by pulling the cartridge out of the valve body with the water on.  Water shot straight up from the valve body about 6 inches.  At that point, about 2 hours in, I was done for the day. Whatever time that was, it was time to start happy hour.

So you'd think I'd have learned my lesson and will call a plumber, right?  Not quite.  A little research tells me that there's some sort of pressure balancer in the cartridge that could be blocking all water flow, and that the new cartridge is bad.  I'll spend $20 at Lowes on a new cartridge today and give it one more shot.  If that doesn't work, I'll break down and call a plumber.  Fortunately, we have 2 sinks in our kitchen.

This sounds exactly like someone I’m married to.  I would’ve given up much sooner & headed directly to happy hour,  but patience is not one of my strong suits.  DH on the other hand seems to take things like this as some sort of challenge. Hope you get it worked out.
