  1. It has to be the sodium. After my husband and I switched to a low sodium diet (1500mg or less per day) how much sodium is in our food. Soups, baked goods, salad dressings, sauces, etc. A small bowl of soup can be more than our daily allowance. A small dinner roll can have almost 500mg in it and that's without butter. The normal daily allowance is recommended to be 2200mg to 2500mg or less. The solution is to reduce sodium intake and drink a lot of water to flush any extra sodium out.

  2. Thank you for the info, lajbec!

Was there a time by which you had to disembark? I have read various reports, depending on different cruise line policies, but it’s unclear to me if HAL asks guests to be off by a certain time.

    THANKS!

Because our flight was so late, we were assigned the last time. I think it was 9:30. It made for a less rushed morning for us. We finished packing, went to breakfast, went back to our cabin to get organized and then made our way to a lounge (I needed wheelchair assist). We caught a cab to take us to our car rental (avis). We spent the day tooling around Seattle at our leisure.

  3. Picture of Form?

Does anyone have a photo of the Form that is used by HAL for Port Valet that you could upload? I have read about this service over on the West Coast Departures Board, but see there is more first-hand HAL info here. Is an evening flight eligible for this service? (I know you used to not be able to check luggage more than 4 hours in advance at SeaTac, but based on the other Board, it seems you can do so with Port Valet; I want to verify that).

    THANKS!

I dont have a copy but used it for our 6/2 disembarkstion off of Eurodam. Our flight wasn't until 10:05pm. Worked like a champ! The form did indicate that there CDC would be no over weight charges assessed and only the fee from the airlines. There was a spot to fill out if you were exempt from baggage fees. We have an airline credit card and flew first class so we noted it. The only hiccup was that the boarding passes printed by HAL didnt scan through security so we had to go to the counter to have them reprinted and then wait in security again. We would definitely do this again!

  4. Knives in checked bags are fine. If you're worried about what you can carry, always check the Gov website https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all

[can't help you with avoiding overweight charges - you'll have to handle that on your own;p] Also note that some stores will offer to ship things home for you at an additional charge....

If you use luggage valet to check your bags from your ship to SEA, they don't weigh your bags ;-)

  5. The main reason your cabin was "freaking hot" is because someone else was also leaving their verandah door open, regardless of posted warning not to. It is an integrated ventilation system. I hope you brought this to the attention of staff who could track down the cabin who started the open-door problem.
As I stated in my post, we reported it. But I'm not going to spend my time chasing down someone to do their job while I'm sweating and about to have an anxiety attack from smothering. Not my first rodeo. I waited on the phone for 50 minutes with guest services one night to have them get our cabin steward and ask again about the temperature. I finally hung up. Our family are rule followers and dont open the door, close the curtains to keep out the sun, stay in line, etc. But at some point, I'm done. Although closing the curtains on an Alaskan cruise is just sad but when on trying to sleep, I dont expect to have sweat running down my face and my cold natured daughter. When she says it's hot, you know it is just not me. Btw! Great job hijacking someone else's thread on a comment I made to a new cruiser.

  6. We just got off Eurodam on Saturday with a VB balcony. Loved it! We all had difficulty opening the balcony of we had locked it because the "key" has to be in the sweet spot in order to push the door open. If you are concerned, you could tie a noise maker to the "key." Although we ended up sleeping with our door open a couple of nights as it was so freaking hot in our cabin. We reported it to our steward and our control was turned down to the coolest setting the moment we walked in to our cabin. We had packed a battery powered fan fortunately to help.

Make sure to start your meclizine st least a night before you leave if you are predisposed to motion sickness. Outside of the inside passage can be pretty rough.

    Happy , safe cruising!

  7. It is actually illegal to bring any extension cord on a RCL ship.

Not illegal. Illegal would refer to a law. It is not a law. It is against RCCL rules. There is a difference. Rccl will provide cords upon request. Interesting enough, my husband and I just got off of a HAL cruise. They did not provide extension cords or distilled water(will for 2.49/gallon). We were told to bring our own. And we did. HAL provided a powerstrip at the dressing table for us to use yo plug in our two extension cords.

  8. Should I do it outside of a cruise ship tour? We are with Carnival and I wanted some info on how to get there on our own.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

See my post #12 above. Grand Cayman is so doable on your own. You can even just take their public "bus" to it. We usually do cruise ship excursions for places we have never been but on Grand Cauman we always do DIY.

  9. My husband and I are traveling on Freedom of the Seas on July 7th. We are considering doing a back-to-back, but it would be very last minute. Has anyone ever extended their vacation adding a second week while on board. Or is there not enough time? I guess I have two questions. Is there a deadline to book last minute? And if you are allowed to book on board would the rooms be discounted? Thanks in advance for any and all input.

    Barbara

I have not done it but the chances of them having an empty cabin only a week out during peak season is highly unlikely.

  10. Hello. American recently changed a flight out of Seattle from 11:30am to 10:15am. If we get off at 8am supposedly, what are our chances?

    Thanks.

Have you contacted AA? If they change the time like that you are supposed to be able to change your flight for no fee.

Isn't the pier at least 30 minutes from the port? Is 8:00 the ship arrival time or your intended time through customs?

  11. We loved the turtle farm. We went 15 years ago (before kid) and then recently went back with our kid and her cousins. People complain because it is not like it is "at home." If you want stuff like at home. Stay there and don't travel.

You get to see the turtles, touch, and pick them up. Yes. They farm them. Yes they release some too. No one forced any one to touch or taste anything.

We went to a vendor holding a sign when we got off the tender. $20/ per person. He took us around the island to see Hell, 7mile beach, tortuga rum store, and dolphins/turtle. Some in our van went to dolphins and we did turtle. The admission was not included but we got a couple bucks off because we were there as a "tour" ie our driver.

  12. We’re off on our 1st cruise on AOS. We have cabin #7690 I’m wondering if this will be a squeeze for 2 adults and a teen, should I see if we can get a larger cabin?! I’m a bit anxious about spending a week in the same cabin as my stepdaughter, I like my space and as much as I love her she’s a huge space invader..is it a decent cabin?

Adventure 7690 is an aft balcony. Your balcony should be good size but any cabin is going to be tight short of the top of the line suites. We travel with our daughter. We select balconies that have a berth. We have found that it confines her "space." The berth is left down so she can get up there to stay in her area (albeit tight). You do have the balcony to get away from each other.

Other than at night, we generally, dont spend a whole lot of time in our cabin.

We do find that keeping things organized helps with the space confines. My daughter has learned that she can't leave all of her crap/stuff/clothes wherever she wants. It is a good prep for college dorm prep[emoji4]

  13. I don’t think kids get thier own number,

My daughter uses my number as she on my account.

You need to sign every person up for their own number. Just like a frequent flier number. For C&A you can tie them together so your kids will get the same benefits as you (assuming that the parent is at a higher level).

Their own number will save information in their profile such as their passport number, etc.

  14. Thanks everyone. I had a look at passports, I don't remember it being an option when I got his. The passport website doesn't seem to do ID type cards anymore after 2011 - not sure if that's the same thing or not. We're in the UK so it may be different to elsewhere. I might be better just taking his passport and making sure I don't lose it!! We do have ehic cards so will also take them too.

We're all looking forward to it so much, it's our first cruise so we'll know what to do next time - 11 weeks to go!

Oh. I didn't realize you were not USA. The cards are for US only.

Just take a photocopy of his passport if you just want to be safe while ashore. Leave the books in the safe on the ship. [emoji4]

    Have a great trip!!

  15. Thank you. What are the passport cards - I've never heard of those? I could take photocopies, never actually though of that either! Novice here!!
You can get passport cards at the same time as getting a passport. Some get those instead of a full book. They generally are not used for international airline travel but work fine for us closed loop cruises and driving to Canada and Mexico.

Kid passports and passport cards are only good for 5 years if issued before they turn 16.

  16. Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering what photographic ID would be acceptable for a child other than a passport. The advice when off the boat at ports is to leave passports on ship and take photographic ID such as a driving licence which is fine for my husband and I but obviously our 6 year old doesn't drive! Is there any recommended photographic ID for children or would we just take his passport?

    Many thanks,

    Linda

If you have the passport card for your child, it works great, otherwise, dont worry about it. Your kid is with you. Their picture is embedded in their keycard.

We have a passport and card for our daughter (since she was 4) and for all of us so we just take our keyboards and passport cards with us and leave our passport books on board. Before the cards, I used to keep photocopies of our books with us.

I've only been asked once for my ID to enter the boarding area, I believe. I think it was Bermuda? Maybe Jamaica? No biggie. It was more to prevent locals from entering.

    Safe and happy travels!
