Smoking on Independance

Hi,

Does anyone know the smoking policies on Independance of the Seas. On past RCI cruises we have always seen designated smoking areas and non-smoking areas on the decks in sunbathing areas. We are non-smokers and wifey is concerned because she read somewhere RCI independance of seas does not have designated non-smoking areas on the outside decks. Is this true?

Thanks

We cruised on the Independence last March and did not find the smoking bothersome at all on public decks. None in our group smoke and we would prefer that all public areas were non-smoking. That said, I believe the port side of the pool deck permitted smoking, as on other RCCL ships, if I remember correctly. I simply walked from end to end of the ship mainly on the non-smoking side and never smelled smoke from the other side. No issues either when sitting in the pools. I do not think you will have anything to worry about. Have a great cruise.

Just off Indy a week ago, port side of the main pool deck was designated smoking, the section seemed much bigger and more popular than I remember it being on other ships but it was definitely just the port side that was smoking.

Casino was also a mix of smoking and non-smoking sections, apparently the smoke is very good about staying only in the parts that its meant to be in ;) Smell was apparent by the entrance to the nightclub/back end of schooner bar though.

DH and I will on the Indy cruise with you sailing on Valentine's Day, 2015. On all Royal ships there is a designated side of the pool deck for smoking, usually the Port side. There is no smoking allowed on cabin balconies nor in the interior public sections of the ship. The casino has designated areas for either smoking or non smoking.

I look forward to meeting you....Join the Roll Call for our cruise and meet some of the other people cruising with us. Also sign up for the Meet N'Mingle.

I expect we will all have a ball.....a great way to 'launch Valentine's Day'!

Sealed with a Kiss!

Just off Indy yesterday. Smoking is allowed on the port side of the pool deck, casino, and outdoor Promenade on deck 4. It is not allowed on balconies, period. If you decide to try it, don't be surprised if security knocks on your door. Someone on another balcony will report it. Stick to the designated smoking areas and you will be fine.

Indy had a 100% charter cruise sailing on November 15th that allowed smoking on all of the pool deck.that was because it was a chartered cruise.

Does anyone know if that area applies to cigars? I love a early morning and late afternoon smoke but realize that others don't enjoy my "smell"

I have to believe that the same rules apply to cigar smoking. The rules apply to E-cigarettes as well.

Yes - The designated Smoking areas allow cigars. Just off Indy yesterday. I did see a few people sneaking cigarettes on the pool deck in non smoking areas. I also did notice a few people sneaking a smoke on the balconies. None of this was bothersome to me - I am not a smoker.

It was a very nice ship and very well kept up. Enjoy

I am a non-smoker and it does bother me. I was on your cruise and did report those smoking in non-smoking areas. The provide smokers a location to smoke, please keep your smoking there and I will stay in the nonsmoking section. I respect the right to smoke, please respect my right to not smoke by staying in the smoking section.

Although someone falsely posted that here, it's not true. We were on that sailing and the smoking policy was the same as any other cruise. We enjoyed the smoke-free starboard side of the pool deck all week and personally witnessed ship staff enforce it a couple times when someone tried to light up on the starboard side.

I was on the Independence last week. There was at least one person smoking on his balcony. He was beside me. I reported him.

I reported the one I saw as well. Not only do I not want to breathe it, it's a fire hazard, too.

I just bring along my smokeless ashtray. Never had any problem or issues with it out on the balcony.

The rules say "no smoking allowed on balconies", not "you can smoke on your balcony if you bring along a smokeless ashtray." But I"m sure you're above the rules, right?

Independence has a special Cigar lounge with a bar -- it is indoors but it is only for cigar smokers.

So I can't smoke in the Cigar lounge while my husband has a cigar. When we went on the Navigator it was not a problem if I was smoking a cigerette. But that was back in 2004. Thanks for any info.

No there were smokers in there also. I thought the question was about a cigar smoking area. Sorry I guess I should have said a designated cigar area not used the word "only"

Sorry, if I saw you smoking on your balcony, regardless of your smokeless ashtray, I would report you to the Hotel Director.

No smoking on balconies, includes yours.

You do realize there is a fire hazard to smoking on balconies? Many ship fires have started from smoking on balconies. Your smokeless ashtray doesn't prevent balcony fires. 😠

Really? Many fires ? :roll eyes: I would be interested in your source for this info. I acknowledge that even one fire is one too many, but, please, this is a little over the top. JMO.

If I am not bothering anyone, why should it be an issue for you?

And how do you know you aren't bothering anyone? Just because they haven't resorted to reporting you?

I for one was *very* glad to see this policy in the cruise documentation that everyone has to agree to. I pay a pretty penny extra for my balcony and I want to be able to enjoy it without having to deal with someone else's smoke.

On my last cruise (NCL Dawn) our next-door "upwind" neighbor liked to smoke cigars on his balcony. I'm sure he thought he "wasn't bothering anyone". But what he was doing was forcing myself and DW to abandon our *very expensive* balcony anytime he was in his room. Unfortunately for us, NCL did not have a 'no smoking' policy, so the hotel dirctor told us we were SOL with no recourse. (She didn't use that language, but that was the jist).

The especially annoying part? The fire warden barged into our room in the middle of the night one night because our in-room smoke detector was going off due to the smoke coming in from the neighbor through our open balcony door... So much for the romantic mood provided by the sound of the sea!

I am stipulating in my hypothetical that no one is being bothered. So if no one is being bothered, than it should be no concern of yours or anyone elses. My smokeless ashtray and I have done 2 cruises with no problems.
