RCCL Smoking Policies

Don't want to offend anyone, but I was wondering what RCCL's smoking rules are on their ships. Considering our first RCCL (have cruised Princess and Disney) on the Freedom or Oasis. We have allergy problems and this can be a problem. Thanks.

There are designated smoking areas on the open decks, and smoking IS allowed on all balconies....the wind should alleviate any problems while the ship is underway. Only one or two indoor areas allow smoking and can be easily avoided.

Since RCI has banned smoking in the cabins, even the hallways are "smoke-free", at least, to my nose!

Since you have not yet booked, you may want to look into Royal Caribbean's sister line - Celebrity. Celebrity has the most restrictive smoking policy among the mass market cruise lines. No smoking in any staterooms, balconies, indoor bars (aside from one portion of one bar); even the casino is 100% smoke free!

No true... If someone is smoking on the balconiy next to your room, you will smell even if you are underway. :mad:

Our last two cruises our neighbors smoked and we never had an issue smelling any smoke either while underway or when in port.:)

 

I do marvel at the non smokers though..

 

On an Alaskan cruise two women would loudly complain about cigarette smoke and how it was killing them since their balcony neighbors smoked.

 

We went to a salmon bake on one of our excursions and there were the two complainers happily breathing in the smoke from the bar-b q pit as they stood with their plates waiting for food.:p

 

Guess wanting to be served first trumped the threat of death from inhaling the smoke.

Our last two cruises our neighbors smoked and we never had an issue smelling any smoke either while underway or when in port.:)

Living with a smoker and/or having to work hours a day in a smoking enviroment are bad for your health, however, the health risks of short-term, intermittent exposure (like what you get from your balcony neighbor or passing through the smoking section of a bar) are negligible.

 

What it is, though, is annoying because the smell's so bad.

I don't smoke. But I do believe that the reason we have as many laws as we do is because it's so annoying.

 

That and when the government spends millions and millions (if not billions) for research to prove something's bad, the research will show it's even worse than we thought. Researchers have families to feed just like the rest of us and know which answers keep their kids in food/clothes.

People post that cigarette smoke from balconies doesn't bother them. I'll tell you what ... you're the lucky ones! I'd venture to guess that on at least 50% of our cruises, we've had either cigarette or cigar smokers next to us. On afts, above and below. We found it esp. bad on the afts at sailaways as the balconies are so big and so many people congregate there. And smoke. As I've said in the past, I sure wish one side of the ship was non-smoking. Okay, your turn. Now it's time for someone to post "here we go again ... another smoking thread."

To the OP.....As AVID non-smokers we don't book balconies for just this reason. But, if you're not going to book a balcony you will be fine. The smoking areas are clearly indicated and easy to avoid.

 

For the most part everyone abides by the rules and we've not had any issues. If we're all considerate of each other we can get along fine.

My Dh and I don't smoke and we always have a balcony cabin. We've been on both Port and Starboard..fore and aft..nada..no issues with smoke on our balcony from our neighbors.

 

Most of your smoking neighbors will probably work something out with you if you ask them.:)

 

 

To me..smoke is smoke..and the billowing smoke from the bar-b-q pit made my eyes water and my throat sore. I moved away from the smoke...but those two gals sat right there and waited for their salmon to be served.:eek:

My father was a smoker, and I couldn't wait to turn 18 so that I could move out. I hate smoke from cigarettes. With a passion.

 

I have been hesitant to book a balcony out of fear that the person next to me would smoke. But then I read on an Oasis thread that a balcony overlooking Central Park or the Boardwalk would be smoke free because smoking is not allowed in those areas. If you are still thinking of one of the Oasis class ships, that could be an option if you wanted a balcony that would be guaranteed to be smoke free.

Thanks. I read reviews on CC about RCCL cruises and they complained about the smoking everywhere ... I don't want our cruise ruined because of this issue.

I agree it is VERY annoying . . however based on the urging of the smokers on this Blog we took a Celebrity cruise and found it just wasn't for us . . .we tried to put our finger on the reason and decide it just wasn't as Fun . . . . so we are coming back to RCCL and I will continue to lobby the cruise line to ban smoking from balconies

I am a smoker but try to consider other peoples feelings. I am all for working with my fellow cruisers. I will be bringing smokeless ashtrays. And I think making part of the rooms smoking, and part non smoking is fantastic.

I can guarantee you that if a non-smoker wanted to snag a cabin on the smoking side they probably would.

 

No problem...but I can also just about guarantee there will be complaining about the amount of smoke on someone elses balcony.:rolleyes:

 

I wandered into the smoking section of a land based casino, just last week.

 

A woman sat down near me and did nothing but complain about the smoke from other players.

 

I finally tired of her whining and reminded her she was in the smoking section and asked why in the world she would sit there if smoke bothered her so much.

 

She told me she liked the slot machines in the smoking section better.:rolleyes:

Non-smoking ashtrays! THANK YOU! What a wonderful gesture and great idea. We also tried Celebrity - twice - and hurried back to RCI. I think we cruised with Celebrity when smoking was still allowed on balconies. And, that must be where I got the idea that there was non-smoking sections in the casino. I've always thought it would be nice if the casino was aft (or forward) with doors to an open deck for ventilation. On the old Dawn Pirncess, the casino was in the nose of the ship ... no doors as I remember.

Trust me, there can be a difference.

I am badly asthmatic (so I really hope the persons on the balcony next to ours don't smoke or if they do it doesn't affect me) and whereas smoke from bonfires and barbecue pits make me sneeze and irritable, cigarette smoke always brings on my symptoms and it is a guaranteed attack if I don't get out of there fast - and unfortunately this occurs even if the smell isn't overwhelming.

A friend of mine who smokes teases me about my asthma and cigarette fumes being worse than an old lady's leg and impending rain.

I will never forget vacationing with my mum in San Juan in 2006 when a man sat next to our table at this outdoor restaurant and lit up a cigarette. Explained to him I was sick and asked him if he could please stop - and got reminded that this was a free world. I was silly enough to try to withstand it so that I didn't have to interrupt my meal. That turned into a two night hospital stay, way to ruin a good trip. Learnt my lesson the hard way.

But yea... all smoke and fumes are not equal, it is entirely possible that cigarette smoke can be a bigger bother to others than other types of smoke, with no hypocrisy involved at all.
