shukapaw Posted September 6, 2014 #1 Share Posted September 6, 2014 Earlier today a Princess tour bus was involved in a single vehicle accident a bit south of Denali National Park. The roads were wet. There were no tourists onboard. There was the driver and two employees from the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. One of the lodge employees was killed and the driver and other passenger were sent to the hospital. Article here. Prayers for the families involved. Putterdude Posted September 6, 2014 #6 Share Posted September 6, 2014 How unfortunate, it just a further demonstration how precious life is and how quickly it can be snuffed out. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families impacted by this tragedy.

Frank47 Posted September 6, 2014 #8 Share Posted September 6, 2014 We were the 4th vehicle on the scene. We stopped to help and were told 911 had been called. There was nothing we could do. It was very shocking and sobering. Road conditions were slick from rain. We traveled more carefully to Anchorage. Life is precarious.

Cruzin-K Posted September 7, 2014 #14 Share Posted September 7, 2014 Apparently, speed was a factor. Sheesh! You can't drive at the same speed on wet roads as you do on dry roads and expect to actually stay ON the road. That accident looked horrific. The driver will have to live with that the rest of his life. It's fortunate that there weren't 50 other passengers on board at the time. However, it's sad enough that even one person died :( We take for granted that the people operating our shore excursions are properly trained, and will take good care of us. Sadly, this isn't always the case.

Sadly, this isn't always the case. I hope the driver is given the chance to have their skills assessed, possibly with more training. They have to live with the knowledge their actions caused the death of a colleague for the rest of their life. I hope training for staff is reviewed and implemented where necessary to prevent something like this happening again. Edited September 7, 2014 by crochetcruise Irrelevant comment. satxdiver Posted September 8, 2014 #17 Share Posted September 8, 2014 I would venture to say that the driver is about to become unemployed by Princess. It is indeed sad news. I have driven the two lane Parks highway several times while on a land trip to AK and the road is difficult in the summer when it is dry. It definitely is not a high speed road and is frequently traveled as it runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks by way of Denali. Tourists will often stop suddenly because they saw an animal so one has to be on their toes expecting the unexpected. To drive that highway in the rain in a large vehicle is treacherous at best. My sympathy to the deceased's family.
nanwel Posted September 8, 2014 #18 Share Posted September 8, 2014 Wonder if seat belts would have helped - we all keep trying to put legislation in place to have seat belts manditory in all buses, and a law that people "must" wear them - most people on buses - even those equiped, do not wear them!?!? Very sad - on their way to pick up a cruise tour? If speed, would we be that impatient if the bus was late because of bad weather, would they be told they "must" be on time. Sobering thoughts. OCruisers Posted September 8, 2014 #19 Share Posted September 8, 2014 From the one picture I saw of that bus I don't think seat belts would have helped. :( LuLu
