NCL Breakaway Haven Suite Review | Lots of Pictures

Pre-Cruise Planning:

After deciding to book the NCL breakaway I spent a lot of time on cruise critic trying to find the perfect room. I wanted a haven suite with a big balcony and didn’t want a forward facing room. The aft penthouse suites on deck 9 have the largest balcony and I choose the port side so we would have a nice view of NYC during sail away and could watch the fireworks after we left GSC. I pre-booked the ultimate dining package, cirque jungle fantasy for the first night and some champagne and rum for the room.

Embarkation/ Day 1:

We live about an hour from NYC so we drove to the pier, getting there around 11 it was very crowded but there were plenty of NCL employees with sign directing people where they needed to go. We followed the signs all the way to the back of the terminal to the haven waiting room, the check-in is done right in the waiting room, no lines. Around 11:30 we were escorted on the ship to the haven where we met our concierge Anoop. After he gave the usual concierge speech we went to our room (9316). The room is beautiful and had plenty of storage. The second bathroom doesn't seem necessary in a room that only sleeps three, we used it as a wet bar most of the time. The main reason we booked that room is for the balcony and it didn't disappoint. There are four loungers, two padded chairs plus a table and four wicker chairs. Even with all that furniture there is still plenty of room to walk around. Other than sleeping, I think 90% of the time we spent in the room was on the balcony. After admiring the balcony and view we went back to the haven restaurant for lunch, did the emergency drill and then it was time for sailaway. We stayed on our balcony for the sailaway so I could set up my camera to take a time lapse of the NY skyline.

Here is the time lapse of our sailaway:

We had Cirque Jungle Fantasy booked for that evening since it is free with the UDP. I heard the food at the show wasn't good so we ate an early dinner at the haven restaurant, which was great. We met Anoop at the haven 30 minutes before the show and he escorted us to the theater so we would have front row seats. The show was amazing, my favorite of all the entertainment on board. My main complaint is the food, it wasn't bad but unnecessary. The show is 90 minutes of non-stop action and having servers walk around and eating during the performance was distracting. I assume NCL decided to serve food at the show so they can charge for it and still claim all of their entertainment is free, you're paying for the food.

Thanks for the great pictures - just like the ones you had your GV sailing.

I think the room actually sleeps 4??

I just checked the NCL site and it does say the Aft Penthouse sleeps 4, I'm pretty sure it used to say 3. The couch in the living room is about the size of a twin size bed, not sure about sleeping two people on it. It's also very uncomfortable.

Your time lapse video was fantastic! Thank you for sharing your amazing photos. The modern décor is very nice.

Your balcony is lovely. It has so much furniture. Are you able to entertain non-haven passengers on your balcony?

We just got off the Breakaway today. We were on the opposite side, in 9916. You can bring anyone to your room. But you could also bring someone to your room located in the Haven. What you are not supposed to do is bring them to the Haven pool area and restaurant.

The suite was incredible. Breakfast on the balcony was great.

Day 2 (Sea):

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise and had breakfast on our balcony (which we did every morning). The meet and greet was well attended and we heard from a lot of the crew, including the captain. Right after the meet and greet was the slot pull, I think there were about 25 people there. We ended up winning $5 each, which was the only win I had in the casino for the week. That evening was the haven cocktail party which was attended by 10-12 crew members including the captain.
