arabels Posted September 10, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 10, 2009 Just wondered if anyone has done a cruise from Cape Liberty to the Caribbean in December- over Christmas- I appreciate it will be cold in NY but will the seas be rough?
patseacruiser Posted September 10, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 10, 2009 I have done the Christmas cruise on the Explorer and just so happened in 2007/2008 it wasn't a brutally cold day - but raining. We did muster in a fleece jacket and then went to Dizzy's - my favorite place to see the ship go under the Verrazano. The next afternoon you could go out and see the change in the weather getting warmer. Seas were not terrible and the Explorer handles them quite well. In fact, had 28 foot seas last February and it was fine - little hard to walk but it was like riding the NYC subway to me.
Rare Keith1010 Posted September 10, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 10, 2009 It will likely be cold. Please keep in mind that the seas vary cruise by cruise so I always say prepare for seas that are rough in terms of any medications you might bring with you. Have a great cruise. megr1125 Posted September 10, 2009 #4 Share Posted September 10, 2009 it depends. it was cold in november with a little rocking...in february it was REALLY cold the 1st 2 days and last 2..and we had close to 15-20 foot waves..you could not walk a straight line...and the "bags" were deployed all over the ship. you just never know...pack stuff you can layer! Impossible question to answer, no one can tell you what it will be like on YOUR cruise as sea conditions vary from day to day.
arabels Posted September 10, 2009 Author #6 Share Posted September 10, 2009 I understand that it will be variable but wondered whether it was generally rather choppy waters- like the Bay of Biscay ( going from UK to Med). Thanks anyway.

Love the beach Posted September 14, 2009 #8 Share Posted September 14, 2009 We have done this trip--NY to Caribbean-- three times--once in July and twice in late January. Generally it can get a little choppy when you are off the coast of the Carolina's, but other than that (unless there is a storm out there) it was calm for us . On our first January trip there was a bad storm and the ship was delayed getting back into port from the previous cruise so our boarding was delayed until 5 pm and our sailaway was delayed to 10 pm (should have been 5 pm). Of course we ran back into this storm on our way down--the first night and a good part of the 2nd day was rough but after that it was smooth sailing there and back. Our 2nd January trip was just fine and we are considering going again this coming January.
RollercoasterManiacs Posted September 16, 2009 #9 Share Posted September 16, 2009 We have left out of NYC 3 times in January and the roughest waters were always off the Carolina coast. We had gale force winds and 40 foot waves on the Norwegian Spirit in 2007. In general though it wasn't too bad. We are already booked to go again in February. Here is a little video of the waves. We had a similar incident on the Norwegian Spirit in January 2006. Rough seas and huge waves hit the ship ... taking out some windows in lower cabins and a dining room. Here's the CC story on that: http://www.cruisecritic.com/news/news.cfm?ID=1496 Altho we were tossed around a bit, it really wasn't too bad ... esp. since we weren't in the lower cabins. But I almost wish we were ... NCL offered some of them free cruises and reimbursements ;)
