swdke Posted September 14, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 14, 2009 Are there taxi available in Newport where the tender boats dock?
SailBadtheSinner Posted September 14, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2009 The area around where the tenders dock gets very congested with excursion buses. Your best bet would be to walk to the Newport Visitors Center which is located one block north from the tender dock on America's Cup Ave. Tickets to the mansions. maps, information, buses, etc. are available at the NVC. Thanks for the reply. I do wish to take the bus #67 to do the mansion's route, however I arrive on a Sunday, and the first bus is at 9:40 am. I understand the Breakers opens at 9, and was wondering how I can be there by 9 am when they open. Our stay in Newport is short, departing at 4 pm, therefore, I'd like to be back to the tender location no later than 3:15 pm for my comfort level to get back on the ship in time. Therefore, I thought that if I can get to The Breakers by 9 am, that would help to try to get in as much as possible. I would prefer the bus, #67, but with it not departing till 9:40 am, I was hoping there might be another way, such as a taxi. Any suggestions? Thanks! I am actually not in Newport until Oct. 11. As far as taxi, though I am not 100% positive, after reading other reviews, I get the impression that taxi are available. Also, bet to get taxi from the Visitors Center, so I read, as the area near the tenders are crowded with busses. But, if you see a taxi, take it. Rare Keith1010 Posted September 16, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 16, 2009 There are some taxis but this is not a large city. So there are some. I would just take a quick walk to the visitor center which is close by the tender drop off to ask for assistance. Keith
Rare debsjc Posted September 21, 2009 #7 Share Posted September 21, 2009 We were there last week, and there were no taxis by the tenders. We walked 1-2 blocks to the visitor centre and they called a cab for us, which came in 5 mins. Coming back we took the 67 bus, and that was also excellent. Rick02809 Posted October 5, 2009 #8 Share Posted October 5, 2009 I have received so much help on this cruise critic site, now it is my turn to re-pay the favor. I live in Bristol, RI, about a 15 minute drive from Newport. There are a lot of shops on America's Cup Boulevard, and Thames Street which is across the street from the Visitor's Center. If you go to http://www.google.com and Google “Newport RI Taxi Cabs”, you will get a good list of phne numbers, I would keep the numbers handy in the event that you can't get on the bus, or get stranded and need a quick ride to the ship. If you feel like walking to the mansions, it can be quite an endeavor, head South on America's Cup Boulevard (keep the water on your right), until you hit the "Wave" statue (surfer's feet sticking out of a wave) at the statue, that intersection is Memorial Boulevard, a 5 minute walk up a slight hill will take you to Bellvue Ave, or the Million Dollar Mile. Take a right on to Bellevue and you can stroll the grounds. If you go to http://www.newportmansions.org , you can "Pre-tour" the mansions to see which one(s) that you are interested in. I recommend taking a cab to Belleview Ave, however Newport on a Sunday can be quite congested. October 10-11 the Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown (you need a cab fare to get over the Pell Bridge $4. toll each way plus cab fare) will be open to tours http://www.beavertaillight.org October 10-12 The 17th Annual International Oktoberfest will be held in Newport at the Newport Yachting Center (traffic will most definitely be a nightmare if you plan on cabbing it to the mansions, so allow for added time. October 17-18 Bowen's Wharf will be having the Seafood Festival , Great food, sample a "Stuffie" stuffed quahog and New England Clam Chowder. http://www.bowenswharf.com Regardless, if you get off of the ship by 9 AM, you will have no problem taking in the local shops and restaurants, and touring the mansions, and still making it back to the ship on time. http://www.newportwaterfrontevents.com Another nice excursion is the 72’ Schooner “Madeline” the tour will take you through Newport harbor, out to Fort Adams and the surrounding area, each tour lasts about 90 minutes, tickets $ 27.00 per person http://www.cruisenewport.com I highly recommend this tour, I have done it in the past, and it is a nice relaxing excursion! October 24-25 "Fortress of Nightmares" at Fort Adams http://www.fortadams.org http://www.fortressofnightmares.com/ (ghost tours start at 6:20 PM, so I don't know if this is available to you. 10- great things to do while in Newport... http://www.visitri.com/current_category.2506/companies_list_region.html?Advertiser_Region=5-4&page_region=newport Welcome to Rhode Island!!! Welcome to Rhode Island!!! Thank you for the great information. I see online there's a $12 fee for the Oktoberfest. Any idea what the $12 admission provides, other than admission? Why is there a fee, is anything included? Thanks.
Rick02809 Posted October 5, 2009 #10 Share Posted October 5, 2009 Although I have never been to the Oktoberfest in Newport, I can tell you that the price of admission is just that... the fee to walk in the door, or "cover charge". Food purchases require you to buy "coins" that you turn into a vendor for goods and services. A bracelet will be required for anyone over 21 wanting to purchase alcohol.
