ckr31 Posted November 17, 2009 #1 Share Posted November 17, 2009 If I give a personal tip(cash of course) to a princess employee who has giving me outstanding services does that person get to keep the tip for his/her self, or do they still have to put it in a pot,to share with other Princess Employees. robgvic Posted November 17, 2009 #2 Share Posted November 17, 2009 As long as you are still giving the 1-. 50 a day they can keep it but if you opt out of that they have to put it intot he pot
rdsqrl Posted November 17, 2009 #3 Share Posted November 17, 2009 If you've left the auto-tip in place, then they do get to keep any extra tip given to them. I usually put it in an envelope with my cabin # to make it easier for them to verify that. Also, if they've earned an extra tip, then to my mind, they've also earned a "You Made a Difference" card -- you can pick them up at the Purser's desk and fill them out -- the employee gets promotions and so forth based on these, so I think that it means just as much to them as does the cash. [settling back now, waiting for the million posters who will feel the need to jump in and provide non-responsive opinions about tipping customs, historical background on service industry compensation, and so on and so on.]

Shoalwater Posted November 17, 2009 #7 Share Posted November 17, 2009 These cards are their stairway to promotions. While an extra $20 may be nice at the end of the voyage, its a one time "bonus". A promotion brings them the extra money every month! Take the time to fill in the YMaD card, being specific about what they did or how they did it. Fluff is okay, but concrete examples are "auditable".

GAPeachessweety Posted November 17, 2009 #10 Share Posted November 17, 2009 Another day on CC and I learned something new. I had no idea about the YMaD cards. I will certainly seek those out this time around in addition to the 'extra' we give.
BAI@bay Posted November 17, 2009 #11 Share Posted November 17, 2009 On one Cruise, at a port stop at Grand Cayman, there were six (6) cruise ships boarding tenders. We were in a massive crowd at the tender pier and spotted our waiter and he gladly guided and escorted us to our Princess Tender Lines. He stayed with us and made sure we were on the correct tender and returned back to the ship. We wrote a commendation letter to Princess to their Santa Clarita headquarters about him after the Cruise and received a thank you note from our waiter saying that he received a Cash Bonus, Employee of the Month and special recognition by Princess for our letter. It was well deserved and I'm glad we could assist in rewarding his going over and above the call of duty in helping us in a very confusing situation, and seeing to our safety and well-being. SingerEsq Posted November 17, 2009 #12 Share Posted November 17, 2009 The crew really appreciates the You Made A Difference cards, which are not publicized much onboard. A lot of people don't know about them. I had a crew member tell me he saves all of them. In addition to promotions, they usually get extra time off for each card. Best to hand them into the Purser, but mention to the employee you have submitted one on their behalf. The card will be given to the employee's supervisor to record in their file and then the employee will receive the card. When we give an extra gratuity, say at the end of the cruise, we usually tell the crew member that we have turned in a card, too. It says on the card that you can give it directly to the employee, but I've had crew members tell me, it looks better if you turn them in (probably so it doesn't look like the crew member filled it out) to the Purser or their supervisor. On the Tahitian, I had the opportunity to hand the cards to the head waiter in front of our waiter and assistant waiter, who were the best we have had to date. This past February, I wrote a letter and e-mailed it to Alan Buckelew's e-mail address regarding a shoreside supervisor that just went beyond the call of duty on a problem we had. I received a very nice response that a copy would go in her file and that they would forward my letter to her.
billet Posted November 17, 2009 #13 Share Posted November 17, 2009 The YMaD cards are available from the pursers desk throughout the cruise. They do make a difference for the staff member and they can be great reference material for future employment.
