All category 8's are balconies, however, some are better positioned on the ship than others or more desired the higher the category. The free upgrade you mention is that you pay the price of an 8A for instance (balcony cabins more forward or aft;more movement) and get an 8C (more centered; less movement) for that price. Higher the letter the more desired the cabin because of location or less movement. Hope that helps.

Most balconys are 185 s.f. with a 10 X 3.5 balcony for another 35 s.f. Some balconys you can see on the deck plans are extended (twice as deep) or other things that make them special. Higher decks are also more for the same exact balcony.

 

Some times the upgrade is to exactly the same cabin, a few decks higher.
