Back to the Class System

The entire world works on a class system....

If it didn't, economy and first class flights would be the same price and have the same amenities.

Afternoon tea at the Ritz would be the same price as a Grand Slam at Dennys.

The Royal Box in a theatre would be as easily accessible as the back row of the third balcony.

I choose what I want to splurge on and what I want to economize on depending on MY priorities - and what my budget is.

Sorry Judy,

But try staying at a hotel for a week Judy, and see how much that costs you. ( including food, entertainment, sightseeing, etc.) Please tell us where else in the world can you stay for a whole week or longer for under a $1,000.00? Do I hear....a cruise ship?........... BINGO ! ! !

Now let's see what you get on RCL or any other cruise line for that matter: A) you get a room B) you can eat whenever and whatever you desire C) go to free shows/entertainment D) use of the pool E) use of the gym F) and you visit different ports of call. Pretty good deal if you ask us ( + 7 cruises later ) so we know a thing or 2 about cruising.

Come on now, yes it's true some can afford a suite and others like us cannot, but to equate that with a class system is being petty and jealous.

Just enjoy yourself,icon7.gif be happy icon7.gif you can afford to cruise and don't begrudge others the "little extras". What's the big deal?

SORRY Bub,but Judy hit the nail on the head.Your rebuttle missed completely.IF ANYONE IS BEING PETTY IT'S YOU

Oh dear, oh dear...CAPTAIN Jake, what a Pity...sighhhhhhh...oh dear, oh dear...sighhhhh.

Dear, dear CAPTAIN Jake we did not miss the point; please permit us to elaborate.

Firstly, calling us "PETTY" is not very gentleman like and rather harsh, don't you think?

Secondly, perhaps we misunderstood and perhaps your description of "PETTY" was actually directed at those passengers that no matter what, complain about anything and everything and always after their cruise.

Thirdly, dear CAPTAIN Jake, don't refer to us as "Bub " ...it's sounds soooo very uncivilized especially in mixed company you know.

Cheers!icon7.gif

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that RCI is reverting to the old class system of cruising?

When I first started cruising everyone was equal and entitled to use all areas of the ship, sit wherever you could find a seat and use all of the beach areas on "private islands". The only thing you got by paying a higher price than the next person was roomier accomodations and some perks in your suite.

Now the suite passengers are getting a special section in the theater, by the pool on some ships, a special area on Labadee that used to be open to all.

Next I guess those of us who don't want to pay big bucks for a suite will be relegated to certain deck, dining rooms, etc.

I'm not sure if I really like this trend of separation.

They are not reverting to the old class system of cruising. What they are doing is making the Enhanced Suite Ammenities a lot more obvious. (Trust me, suite occupants have always been treated differently from other stateroom occupants). The reasons for the current changes are probably twofold:

1. RCI needed to add some ammenities to those in suites to keep up with the other mainsteam cruise lines. That's a given. I'm sorry, but as others have said on other posts, the "increased real estate" arguement was simply not enough. RCI had to up the ante. Unfortunately, the new obvious, perks that they have focused on basically cost the cruise line little to nothing to implement; which leads to the second point-

2. RCI needed to make enchancements that cost the cruise line little or no additional money. It costs RCI nothing to block off a couple of rows of deck chairs or theater seats and hold them as reserved for suite passengers. Add in seating in the specialty restaurants for WJ breakfast and lunch, again costs nothing.

JMHO

Happy Cruising,

TnT

Has anyone asked you since I see the spinning diamond on your sig.

How do you feel about the new D perks?. Roping off a section in the main DR for breakfast. So many D's now that 2 lounges are sometimes used for the nightly event.?

As a D member-do you like those perks?

Some of you on the so called "capitalist" side of the discussion don't really understand the concept of capitalist and I have no idea why it was even brought up in this discussion are sounding pretty silly.

I for one am not jealous of what Diamond+, Diamond, Platinum or even Gold members receive or received in the good ole days. I am not nostalgic for the old days of cruising. The folks who have had the opportunity to cruise X number of times - good for them. The folks who want to spend $$$ for their cruise great!

But you folks who book suites for all the supposed "perks" have got to be kidding me! For other than the Concierge lounge, a few cocktails, and a specialty coffee you'll spend several hundred dollars more per person sometimes many hundreds of dollars more for benefits that cost the cruiseline how much???

Oh, I know!

$0, that's right - ZERO, Zilch, Nada. Not one red cent.

Wow! Where can I get me some of that!

The cruise line has not invested one red centavo into making your cruise vacation more enjoyable than mine in a standard balcony cabin.

Guess who is laughing all the way to the bank?

As far as I'm concerned the way the Suite guests are rewarded on a standard mass market cruiseline leaves much to be desired in bang for the buck to me. But as others pointed out - if your extravagance helps to keep my costs down - great. But I still find the special seating and golden ropes insulting to me and my cruise experience.

So, you're laughing all the way to the bank, but still insulted. Interesting concept, feeling insulted by the people helping to pay your costs. You certainly sound a lot more like a socialist than a capitalist.

In closing:

It's us 'oldguysandgalls' again the "eternal optimists" as we are known, and for the record we are not rude. Honest, practical and enjoying life? 4 X YES ! (we drive people crazy with our positive attitude éh?)

For example, we just returned from a lovely, just lovely cruise on the Grandeur of the Seas out of Baltimore. What is so puzzling to us is that some fellow passengers (posters) on the same ship apparently had a bad cruise, while others had a great cruise.... ? We were in steerage, or 'oars provided' cabin and we still had a lovely cruise.

Oh, we know...

Yes, there can be line-ups at the Windjammer Café. Yes, deck chairs can be hard to find sometimes. Yes, they allow smoking in the casino. Yes, the cabins can be small. Yes, the gratuities can be a pain. Yes, Rainy weather can be a damper etc.etc.

But please, let's be realistic here, life is one long line-up, and in everyone's life a little rain must fall.

Of course, for us 'oldguysandgalls' there's a bright side; the older we get the shorter the line-up for heaven.

We, as the eternal optimists are not too overly concerned by minor things. The real big thing is enjoy cruising especially on RCL Grandeur of the Seas. Cruising is a wonderful experience, whether it 7-10-14 days or longer...all our cruises have been wonderful.

Thank you Ocean Boy for your compliments on my singing voice :)

Happy New Year everyone!

The tired old perceived "haves and have nots". Fact is, everyone decides how to spend their money. If we choose to stay in suites and spend that money, then that is our choice. We have always stayed in suites because we want to. When I say we stay for perks, I mean more than just the extra perks of CL or whatever. This will be our first full up suite on RCI so that is new to us. We stay in suites on Carnival and get priority boarding plus the larger room. On Princess in a mini-suite we got fresh fuit delivered to our room everyday. It's the little things as well.. I mean, larger room, double sinks, larger bathroom, etc that come with the suite itself. It all adds up to what we want and how we want to spend our money. But, please quit whining about how unfair it is, because believe me, we are paying for the extras we get and anyone who chooses to can.

And, really, it's no one's business how we choose to spend our money. Whenever anyone starts talking class system, the reality is what they are showing is jealousy and envy. And before anyone gets defensive, why do you care since you feel so smug in your saving of money by staying in a cabin category less than a suite? We all have choices. We choose spending money on suites. I think you'll find that if anything, there are less class separations than there used to be. At one time, the vast majority of people couldn't afford to cruise at all. Not true now.

I just hope if the ship goes down, they don't lock the non-suite guests on the lower decks of the ship.

Yes, I am a non-paying suite guest. For me, who spends little time in my room can't justify paying the price of a suite, so I guess I'll go down with the ship.

Sorry all, I couldn't have made my post any less clear. :p

And no, I was not testing the eggnog.

I meant - RCCL is laughing all the way to the bank, not me.

If you noticed in an earlier paragragh I wrote that I harbor no ill will towards passengers who choose suites. As many others have posted - their choice helps make my choice a little more budget friendly. I also posted on a page far far away that unlike what some on the boards want us to think I believe quite a few suite passengers are enjoying a splurge and have saved for a while to be able to enjoy it. So no, I don't laugh at them, rather, good for them.

The jab was at RCCL for making some of the benefits for suites passengers sound like it's all that and more when it is really just a little smoke and one or two mirrors.

Happy New Year to you both - what a great attitude. Maybe one day I'll grow up enough ;) to share it.

Along those lines - their gain in Baltimore will be the loss of Port Everglades - Grandeur is leaving in the spring to be replaced by Enchantment. I think she will be in great hands with passengers like you.

II'm little confused. Grandeur is sailing out of Tampa, or at least I hope it is as we're scheduled to sail on her in ~30 days..... :)
