Aquahound Posted January 4, 2010 #26 Share Posted January 4, 2010 I live in a state where smoking is prohibited in nearly ALL public places. A little of a comparison to cruising - X has completely banned smoking from interior spaces. Despite this, it was nearly impossible to find a seat in the Martini Bar at night. It was packed and lively every night of the cruise.

As the ship sails Posted January 4, 2010 #28 Share Posted January 4, 2010 I am a smoker, and recently took a Carnival cruise with friends that were new to cruising. Won't bore you with a review , but the the two venues that we really wanted to go to we couldn't because of the smoke was intolerable. It seems that even Carnival has cut down the places in which smoking is allowed and the smokers just camp out there and you can't even walk by without getting it on your clothes. I agree smoking and drinking = FUN, but not if you can't breathe. Rather than ban smoking from so many bars the cruise lines could add better ventilation to these areas and that would easily solve the problem. There are multiple companies that offer solutions to remove the smoke from the air in the room and keep it feeling smoke free even with many smokers in the room. Perhaps as Celebrity doesnt even allow smoking on balconies then the folks who go on Solstice/Equinox are probably mostly non-smokers anyway. I guess therefore Celebrity would be nearest there is to a no smoking cruiseline?
James in SA Posted January 4, 2010 #30 Share Posted January 4, 2010 I agree about the ventilation. On Conquest smoke around the casino area on the Promenade deck ... which is usualy the most convenient way to get from one of the end of the ship to the other... was especially bad. It was REAL bad sometimes. On Ecstasy they have a similar layout and plenty of smokers on board, but smoke was seldom a problem in that area, or anywhere else for that matter. The only explanation I can think of is that perhaps Ecstasy's ventilation systems do a better job. Of course I am talking about brand X. I will try Voyager in a couple of weeks. :)
ChrisUK Posted January 4, 2010 Author #31 Share Posted January 4, 2010 In years to come, will we all look back on Sunday, July 1, 2007, as the day that started the demise of the traditional English pub, with smokers becoming like lepers - banished not to some isolated island, but outside to the bikeshed in all winds and weathers? What next? As smaller pubs will inevitably be forced to close down because smoking customers might decide to stay home to drink with friends, some of whom might not smoke, could we see a future ban on doing this? I rest my case. The original thread was mainly about the 'traditional' English bar. A drink, a cigarette and some live music. Enjoy your smoke free martini bar, champagne bar, food places, pool etc etc but let an age old traditian continue. At the end of the day, non smokers have many more drinking options than smokers. I am one of the few who actually smokes less when I drink, but the fun atmosphere is much better....
ChrisUK Posted January 4, 2010 Author #32 Share Posted January 4, 2010 While im at it, as a traditional pub, why not add a pool table, darts and dominoes and some crisps!!!

twoputt.plusone Posted January 4, 2010 #35 Share Posted January 4, 2010 Actually I disagree with you and I am a NON-SMOKER.:) I enjoyed the bars much better when they allowed smoking in them all as the smokers tend to be the friendly and lively ones at the bar. Obviously there are some non-smokers that fall into this category also as I am certainly one of the friendly and lively non-smokers. However the bars have not had the same fun factor since many became non-smoking.:) Unfortunately some of us non-smokers aren't physically able to be in a smoking area. It isn't a matter of choice for me. I do agree that in general terms smokers do tend to be a fun lot. Me too even though I don't smoke. ;)
uksimonusa Posted January 4, 2010 #36 Share Posted January 4, 2010 On the Navigator in the Irish Pub they allow smoking in there...so what other ships do they allow smoking in the Pub? Adventure, Explorer, Mariner, Liberty and Independence, there needs to be some consistancy within ships of the same family, rather than the current hit or miss approach, based on the HD onboard
ckrobyn Posted January 4, 2010 #37 Share Posted January 4, 2010 The casino on formal nights (which are non-smoking) are a pleasure. I am a non-smoker (quit over a year ago) and I can't stand the smell of smoke (never thought I would ever say that!) I just stay away from the casino 5 out of the 7 nights of my cruise - I save money too ;)

So it's only when the Indy comes over the pond that the Pub becomes no smoking. I am guessing the Adventure will still allow smoking in the Pub when she comes across as she will be sailing from Med port...rather than Southampton. amybeth4 Posted January 4, 2010 #41 Share Posted January 4, 2010 I'm sad to read you can't smoke in the pub on the Oasis. That was my favorite place to go for a quick ciggy on the Liberty, although I WAS surprised that smoking was allowed, considering how small it was, and considering how, if the bar was crowded, you could DEFINITELY smell it as you walk by on the Promenade. (But seriously, you had to really be walking in front of it to smell it.) And I certainly drank more when I went in there. Had i not gone in for quite a few smokes, I wouldn't have ordered that drink! :)
Captain Jake Posted January 4, 2010 #42 Share Posted January 4, 2010
Ok... Yes, another smoking thread... I have now been on 5 cruises, the first 4 where smoking was allowed in more places were more fun. I have not smoked all my life, only 3 years, and I hated it before, but thats irrelivant. On a typical cruise there will be my wife and I, a couple of great friends from Florida and maybe a few others. All are smokers. We tended to go into the 'Traditional' English bar, drink and smoke. Ok, not everyones cup of tea, but we all do what we enjoy. We would spend a lot of money whilst in there too, which I guess most smokers would. In December, the policy had changed, no smoking in the English bar, and guess what, it was dead, all week. No takings, no tips for the musician. Just comments like, it was so nice to walk 'past' the english bar and not smell smoke!! Walking past doesnt benefit anyone!! There are 37 (or 36) bars on Oasis, so why make a 'traditional' pub non smoking? Yes, its now UK law not to smoke in pubs, but this is a traditional pub, which was always a pint and a cigarette. I dont get it! Why change something that wasnt a problem and was a good revenue generator? Lastly, why still sell cigarettes on the ships?? Where can we buy them? The shop... Where can we smoke them, almost nowhere!! Wheres the sense??
I have NEVER been on a cruise where the smoking places were more fun than the non smoking. In fact the the opposite has been the case 100 percent of the time.Business has increase here in many places since overdue smoking ban was put in place here.Thumbs up to Royal :cj

When we were on the Liberty last May you could smoke on the patio outisde of the Diamond Lounge. Well, we thought it would be the same on the Indy, but it was not. No smoking allowed on the outside Diamond Lounge patio.

bplazo Posted January 4, 2010 #45 Share Posted January 4, 2010 I don't smoke, however, I do think that they should have a smoking and a non-smoking bar. The only concern would maybe be for the workers who may not like the smoke. I remember when I was a server at a restraunt and had to work in the smoking section, I would come home from work and I smelled of smoke and would sometimes have bad headaches. When are restraunt when non-smoking I did fell better, however, I would still work in a smoking area if I had too

bbenson Posted January 5, 2010 #47 Share Posted January 5, 2010 When smoking is banned completely in bars / resturaunts in a city there tends not to be a drop in revenue because people still go. They have no choice if they want to eat out / go out. BUT when you have two establishments side by side and one allows smoking and one does not thats where you may find an inequality in revenue. It would be interesting to study and find out if it actually made a measurable difference. If you believe cruise ships make as much from nonsmokers as smokers please see the Carnival Paradise for example. The ship booked as heavy as a regular ship but onboard revenue was far below that of other ships in the same class on similar itineraries. Carnival trying to save face moved the ship to west coast and claimed the "non smoking ship" as a total success but you'll notice they didn't replace it with a new ship did they? We had looked at booking X for our cruise next year but no smoking in rooms or balconies... the rooms I understand but balconies?!?! come on now! Instead of booking 5 rooms on X we booked 5 rooms on Oasis.
beachchick Posted January 5, 2010 #48 Share Posted January 5, 2010 I can't resist. Isn't it kind of ironic that the title of the thread insists on "no sob stories," but that's exactly what the original post describes? I'm guessing that non-smokers are not allowed to have sob stories, but it's okay for smokers to relate theirs. beachchick
ChrisUK Posted January 5, 2010 Author #49 Share Posted January 5, 2010 Oh dear..... Sob story?? I dont believe making an arguement for having a smoking pub is an arguement, just a genuine request. Where as, we dont want to smell like you, we dont want to walk past, we have our rights, its not fair etc etc I think is.... If you dont want to smell of smoke, drink somewhere else, because yes, you do actually have the choice so stop being so selfish and greedy and let us also have a choice. Cruising isnt just designed for 70% of the population, its designed for everybody, but because of the constant moaning and whining from non smokers, the 30% of us are left with less and less choices. Oh well, heres to a big hike in prices for all you non smokers when passenger numbers dwindle.....
