Grannycb Posted January 6, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 6, 2010 What is the procedure for e-book readers (Sony Reader, Kindle, Nook) when going through security? Do you need to take them out of their case as you would with a laptop?
Rare FlyerTalker Posted January 6, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 6, 2010 First off...I have no official or experiential knowledge. Given that, I would guess the answer is no -- the reason for the laptop "rule" is because of both the concentration of electrical/electronic components in one place plus the ability to stash explosives within the body of the machine. The e-books have neither of those criteria. OTOH, we are talking about extremely knowledgeable security professionals setting these standards, so....;)
ab0si Posted January 6, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 6, 2010 My Kindle (Amazon's e-book device) has traveled extensively. It does not have to removed from your carry-on luggage.
lka1012 Posted January 6, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 6, 2010 I have not had a problem with my eReader either, (other than digging it out of the bottom of my bag when I was ready to read)

Do you need to take them out of their case as you would with a laptop? As already stated, no, it may stay in your bag. I did have a problem on one flight, as I placed it in the seatback pocket, and the FA asked me to remove my laptop from the pocket. I told her it was a Kindle, and she said she had never heard of that. I think she thought it was some computer brand. Obviously spends too much time at high altitudes :). Grannycb Posted January 6, 2010 Author #6 Share Posted January 6, 2010 Thanks for the answers. I thought the readers would be good to leave in the carryon bag but thought I'd ask. BTW, I love my Sony Reader. I've checked out books from the public library and loaded them into the reader to get ready for our next cruise. Can't wait to find a shady spot on deck where I can kick back and read.
