do ladies have to wear nylons on formal nights?

It depends on the outfit and shoes for me (in my 20's). Some dresses look good with out. Last time, I had one dress that needed hose for the outfit to look more finished so I wore sheer hose. I wear hose and tights for work, especially in the winter under my dress pants. I'm not uncomfortable in them. Plus, if they are sheer enough, like make-up, you can hardly tell that someone is wearing them!

The other thing that matters is shoes. I have some shoes that work better with hose. I have others that work better with bare feet. It all depends.

I could never say that you should never wear hose on a cruise with formalwear. Nor could I say that you should always wear them on a cruise with formalwear. If it looks right, wear it. If it doesn't, don't.
