tuggers Posted January 25, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2010 With the ships libraries getting slimmer and slimmer I find it necessary to take my reading material with me. I'm a fan of mysteries but all my favorite authors seem to be dying. In the last several months we've lost Robert Parker, Stuart Kominsky, Michael Crichton to name a few. Anyone have any suggestions for other authors or books you've enjoyed?
QuitMyDayJob Posted January 25, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2010 The books I've enjoyed recently are: "An Unaccustomed Earth" "The Other Boleyn Girl" "Three Cups of Tea" "Loving Frank" I'm reading "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle" right now, and it's long, and although it is keeping me reading, I wouldn't call it compelling. Andy Posted January 25, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Hi Gail ! I used to make it a plan, to read any book possible, about the Cruise Industry. Now that I've read just about every book out there, I have been getting into listening to Music on My MP3 Player. What can I say..... I just love technology ! Sorry I couldnt be of more help Gail. As always, it's great to hear from you. Any Cruises planned ?
oldbluff Posted January 25, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Michael Connelly and James Lee Burke wsrite compelling detective thrillers. a cut above the rest, in my experience. just read an older Ken Follett book that was was delightful (more of a WWII spy novel). I don't spend a lot of time reading on a cruise but it is important for me to have a good book or two with for whenever I am waiting or feel like it. One of my personal Hells would be without anything interesting to read when I want to. :)
tuggers Posted January 25, 2010 Author #5 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Hi Andy! As a matter of fact I just booked Mercury 11 nights out of Charleston for 3/8. We enjoyed the 17 nights on Mercury in December through the Panama Canal so we thought we'd try her again.

smtcan Posted January 25, 2010 #8 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Talking of Ken Follet the best 2 books I've ever read are Pillars of the Earth and the sequal World Without End. ;) I would agree that they are two of the best books I have read - but they are unlike any other Ken Follett novels and may not appeal to a suspense/mystery reader. My current mystery favourites are Ian Rankin, Louise Penny and Peter Robinson. Sheila
travelgenie Posted January 25, 2010 #9 Share Posted January 25, 2010 I leave next week on a 12 day out of Baltimore.....we have 3 sea days going and 3 days coming back from the Caribbean. I am taking a book my kids gave me for Christmas, which I just started, "Under the Dome" by Stephen King, it is about 4 inches thick, so far it is great and I look forward to finding some quiet space and curl up with it. gkm Posted January 25, 2010 #11 Share Posted January 25, 2010 I have a Kindle now and so I don't have to load up on books, and it sure does save a lot of space in my suitcase. I have 27 books loaded on it now and am ready to cruise next week.:D Gail, if you don't know these authors, you might give them a try: David Baldacci, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, John Lescroart, Steve Martini, Stephen White, and Marcia Muller. They all write great mystery/thrillers and have on-going characters in each book. Garry
jackdiamond Posted January 25, 2010 #12 Share Posted January 25, 2010 I will probably start with "Intellectuals and Society" by Dr. Thomas Sowell, if I do not read it before said cruise.
Karynanne Posted January 25, 2010 #13 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Gail, for pure "cruising" reading, I like Kate Jacobs' books. A Friday Night Knitting Club, Knit Two, and Comfort Food. Enjoy Mercury! Karyn

MAD70601 Posted January 25, 2010 #16 Share Posted January 25, 2010 I'm awaiting my nook ereader from Barnes & Noble, and I'm anxious to load it up for my 4/19/10 TA on the Equinox. I thank you for this thread, and I look forward to researching all of your suggestions on the B&N site for ebooks. Mark
steelydon Posted January 25, 2010 #17 Share Posted January 25, 2010 For the first time ever I actually read a book on board, you can't beat the veranda for late night and early morning reading. In case you are wondering I am not antisocial although I am not as normal as I appear. We did catch all the shows and enjoyed the fitness center, casino, Michaels, and Cova Cafe. I brought "Footprints of God" by Greg Iles with me and when I finished it I took advantage of the Century's library and read "The Sign" by Raymond Khoury. I can recommend Footprints but "The Sign" was not as good as "The Last Templar". I gave Footprints to Jean-Pierre Joubert the onboard marketing manager who I met at the Captains Party. You may want to consider giving a book to staff member if you finish it onboard. Lots of good books, not enough time. Don

I'm currently reading this book too - am about halfway through (just another 500 pages to go!). I'm loving it, more like the Stephen King I remember from years ago. Highly recommended for fans of Stephen King.
pete_coach Posted January 25, 2010 #19 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Gosh, I took 3 books, a Clive Cussler, a Lee Child and a Ken Follet but, had such a good time, never read a one :D
btownfamilycruiser Posted January 25, 2010 #20 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Thanks for all of the suggestions. My husband is a huge mystery/thriller fan so now he has some new authors to read! Personally, I love anything by Rosamunde Pilcher, Maeve Binchy, and others of the same genre. The biggest dilemma is what clothes to leave at home in order to fit in more books! jimbug Posted January 25, 2010 #21 Share Posted January 25, 2010 I have to throw my little recommendation in. Normally, I read books with a little more "substance", but a friend convinced me to start reading the "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer. (Yes, the one with the movies and the vampires and the Team Edward vs Team Jacob, omg help!) :D I have to admit, I hate supernatural stories, I am not big into vampires, and I really don't usually care for "teenybopper" books....but these 4 books had me HOOKED, from start to finish. (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn)
Brerpossum Posted January 25, 2010 #22 Share Posted January 25, 2010 I carried Dan Brown's latest "The Lost Symbol" on the last cruise, along with a early Clive Cussler. Oh man this post makes me long for the next cruise.
Cruising Carol Posted January 25, 2010 #23 Share Posted January 25, 2010 Went through my Kindle list for some authors -- mostly of mysteries -- that I enjoy. I love the Kindle since I can carry a library with me and read what I feel like reading at the time. The authors are Deborah Crombie, Ariana Franklin, Lisa Gardner, Sue Grafton, Steig Larsson, Carla Neggers and Victoria Thompson. From the archived list (have read recently), Julia Spencer Fleming, Laura Lippman, Nevada Barr, and Margaret Maron. I bought the Kindle about a year ago. I now find I prefer reading on it rather than from a hardback or even a paperback. When I thought I needed to increase the font size on a paperback and then realized I couldn't, I knew I was an ebook reader. (The Kindle gives me 6 font sizes.) phinn Posted January 25, 2010 #24 Share Posted January 25, 2010 My sister got me into Stuart Woods. I would love to take one of his books on a cruise because I think you could easily finish it on a cruise. He is light reading and easy to follow if you can put it down!... Have a great cruise! Garry Excellent choices, Although lately I've thought that Baldacci is mailing it in, like James Patterson sadly has done for years. And also my personal favorite Nelson Demille; and in addition, Richard North Patterson, John Sanford, David Ellis, & Daniel Silva, whose protagonist, Israeli agent/art restorer Gabriel Allon is one of my favorite fictional characters.
