DON'T go walking around the inner city by yourselves, straight off the ship.

Take a ship's tour, or take your own DIY tour, preferably out to Maracas Bay.

Ain't much for a trio of girls to be doing, in Port of Spain itself.

Get together with other folks and assemble a vanload of cruisers out to Maracas Bay!

You'll be there in about 45 mins. seeing some neat scenery on the way there.

And when yuh reach,

tell Richard yuh want a Shark and Bake for Lunch!

I am not sure that I would have a huge problem walking around in downtown Port of Spain during the day. As you move out of the city to the suburb of San Juan...not thanks, it was pretty much a ghetto. As the op has pointed out Maracas Beach is pretty nice and worth the trip to see it.

My boss, originally from Grenada (and at least six feet tall - LOL), said he would never walk around the city, either on his own or with his cousin! Nuf' said for me. We're taking a tour:eek: but will definitely check out the beautiful beach and scenery! We will save money on other islands but will splurge on this one.

Don't!!
Why not?

I'd suggest cruisers plan to spend about the same on most islands they visit.

Only one I'd spend more actual $$$ on, is St.Maarten

because of the shopportunities there, no other reason really.

But tour-wise I'd spend about equal dollars (all other things considered)

We lived in both Diego Martin and Trincity. I wouldn't recommend just walking around Port of Spain especially as a tourist. Go with a group. I lived there and safety in numbers was often our motto :)

Hey, it's the same ole strategy for just about any other country you visit..

Avoid the city/cities -try to see the country, see the island.

Port of Spain is not Trinidad -it's just one city on that island.

The other fifteen-sixteenths of the island is really quite interesting and beautiful

but you have to get yourself outside that 2 mile radius of where your ship docks, in the crappiest part.

Sorry bout dat circumstance

That means $pending $ome money on a tour, $hocking though that may be to you 'rich cruisers'. :D

Port of Spain Trinidad is NOT a DIY(Do It Yourself) destination

-you need to come to terms with that reality. ;)
