Train to Pompeii

Anybody got a timetable for the Trains to Pompeii from Naples.

 

We will be on the Grand Princess in May and will be in Naples on a Sunday and was thinking about using the train to get to Pompeii, wasn't sure whether they had a good service and if they suffer with interuptions on Sunday's re engineering works etc.

Have you checked with others on your roll call to see if possibly they have a group formed for a private tour? Pompeii is best enjoyed with a tour guide that can explain what you are seeing as you go. It is massive and much larger than we even imagined, but without someone explaing what we were looking at, it wouldn't have been half as enjoyable.

Many times you can find a private tour with a small group that includes transportation and a guide, it is well worth looking into.

Trenitalia does not go to Pompei (or Sorrento). These towns are served by the Circumvesuviana line. See http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en or go to my train site in the link in the sig line. Service is regular and reliable.

Just so we don't confuse anyone, the state train line, Trenitalia, does go to Pompei, but to the new city, not to the ruins. I made that mistake the first time I went, and wound up walking the mile or so from the town train station to the ruins, but took the Circumvesuviana back to Naples. I am educable!

On Sundays trains http://www.vesuviana.it/ usually go twice per hour; on 9th and 39th minute. Trip takes 37 min. We took the train from Porta Nolana station, about 15 min walk from dock (ask for directions). In Pompeii private guides are about 10 euro pp for 10 person 2 hr tour, audio guide is about 5 euro, maps are free. Admission is 11 for adults but free for seniors and kids (if you can prove some ties to EU).

 

Try to go first thing in the morning as it gets hot. Also bring water; vendors outside charge at least 1 euro for small bottle.

You want Pompeii Scavi station. "Scavi" is Italian for excavations.

You do not need a schedule for the Circumvesuviania Line (this is the private train company that operates the route from Naples to Sorrento with a stop at Pompeii Scavi) since the trains run every 30 minutes and do not require or accept reservations. Keep in mind that the trains are like old commuter trains.

We did this in October. It is easy and quite cheap, something like 6 Euro return. We walked from the ship terminal to the railway terminal, a good hike, but you will see a bit of Naples(a very dirty city). The railway terminal was, and probably still is, under major reconstruction so access is just a little difficult. You want the wing to the right and go down one level, maybe two. There are ticket windows down there, different windows for one way and return. Forget anything you might read about the ticket validation machines. There is a turnstile system that does the ticket validation and, at least when we were there, a woman attendant to help. On the return from Scavi go inside the station and find the tunnel to the other side. Be prepared to board promptly, the doors are only open for about 15 seconds.

It sounds like MGA initially went to the wrong train station, Napoli Centrale, then backtracked underground to the correct station, Circumvesuviana Porta Nolana. They are only about a third of a mile apart, but there's no need to walk it twice.

 

To see the difference, on a google map, the Circumvesuviana station is on Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, 387-390 (or use coordinates 40.849024,14.268816); the street view function will show you pictures of the front of the station.

 

For Napoli Centrale, use Piazza Garibaldi.

 

For your starting point at the cruise port, use Molo Angioino.
