Canadians & Passports in Eastern Caribbean?

What happens with our passports as we go on shore for our shore excursions during our Eastern Caribbean trip? We're stopping at Nassau, St. Thomas & St. Martin? I've heard people from the US, they don't have to show their passports, and I've heard us Canadians, the ship will keep the passports in their possession each time we go on shore. Can someone explain? TIA

Some cruise lines keep your passport for the duration of the cruise, and some let you keep it and just have you line up for each port and go through immigration yourself. The first time it's a bit scary to leave your passport, but they have a system and it seems to work. I always have a copy of the numbers just in case.

Carnival will take you passport and keep it for the duration of the cruise.

(I hate surrendering me passport and I wish they didn't force us to do it)

All you will need when you go ashore is a picture ID (drivers license will do) and your sail and sign card.
