Craps...Bet's for the Dealers

I've been playing Craps for a few cruises now and I must admit that I forget to tips the dealers.

What would the dealers like to see? A flat tip at the cash out, or a bet laid for them during the game?

If it's a bet during the game, what bet would be the best for them? Pass line, inside, all hard, or a yo from time to time?

I'm cruisin in 2 weeks and would like to comp the dealers if there working for me. Thanks

The dealers truly appreciate any action given to them - it gives them something to root for as well.

When it comes to a flat tip or action... so many dealers have asked for the action. Tips are generally split by ALL the dealers on the floor for the day.

I've been dealing in Las Vegas for 11 years and I just want you to tip me. Cashing out $1,031 after buying in for $100 and throwing out a "$1 yo for the boys" is not a tip, it's an insult.

Now, I have worked with dealers that don't deserve to be tipped. And I have worked with others that are way undertipped. I have gone out and gambled where I tipped when losing because the dealer(s) made losing fun and I've not tipped when winning because the dealer(s) had bad attitudes.

If the dealers made your gaming experience fun, they should be tipped. If you made bets while playing and those bets didn't pay off for them, a hand in when you cash out should still be made. It's not the dealers fault you made bad bets for them (Yo's and Hardways are just that, bad bets, they pay off nice when they hit, but that is one time out of 8, 10 or 16).

My favorite way of betting for the dealers is using the casinos money to tip them. I'll put a chip on top of mine on the pass line (or just on my bet at 21, Roulette or whatever game I'm playing) When I get paid I keep the same bet for myself and put their chip as a bet for them. Everytime I win I replace their bet. At Craps I'll place $3 bets on the numbers for them and let them know I'm controlling their bets. And I'll press theirs similar to how I'm pressing mine. First time it's a full press, then it's in small increments. A $3 4, 5, 9 or 10 can be used to take 2 numbers to $5, then $10, $15, $20, $25 etc.

20 years behind the tables here, either dealing, floor, pit or shift and you are so right....

Exactly, I am working at a small joint now with a lot of break in's, I am teaching them the real way to deal, not to just stand there and pump cards.

Again, exactly, I will take a line bet over a hard way any day of the week, the same goes for place bets, yes the hard ways, yo's, horn bets are nice when they hit, but a line bet is a nice sign that the player really wants you along for the ride.

Hi, I was a cruise ship casino dealer for 15 years. If you put a bet on for the crew its a good idea to put it with your own bet, then if you win, the crew win. Also, the dice crew would tend to give you the time you need to place your own bets if the game starts getting quick if they know that you are a tipper (or a george as its called). I know we did ...

cheers, chris

Any winnings that you make for the dealer is also pooled...they HAVE to pool all of the tips.

Thats right, they all pool tips. In the old days of The Big Red Boat we used to keep our own tips but that resulted in Pit Bosses friends being sent on the big tables and things like that.

Do the pit bosses split the tips also?

The tipping is an interesting question. When I first started playing craps, I would tip outright for all the boys...then a dealer recommended I put it with a bet...so I did that for awhile. Now I have gone to either a straight tip, or with one of my bets. The only bets I bet for the crew are either pass line bet, or 6 or 8 depending which one is "hot". I have debated about a hardways bet when I bet hardways, but I prefer to keep it with a "safer" bet than hardways. Not that I have concrete evidence, but it seems the crew prefers the pass line, but I am not sure.

I also appreciate the dealers that say only tip if its a good dealer. On the cruise ships, I find the dealers so bad, its hard to tip for bad service. Not all, but there are many that you have to watch the payout to make sure they did it correctly as well as they got your bet in the right place, and that they pay you out for your bet.

I'm not sure I understand. When you put a chip on yours on the pass line, do you put the same amt as your pass line bet? Then what about the odds? Or do you put it to the side and let them know it is for the dealer?

Can you place a $3 bet on a number even if the min table is $5? Or does table min mean the player has to put down a min of $5 and any amt on the other, place, field, hardways, etc? Thanks

at craps when I have the dice I always put a pass line bet for the dealers beside my bet, then back it with odds. AT BJ i put a quarter on top of my bet, if it hits, i give them the winning chip and let the original bet ride, then usually parlay it 2 times if I keep winning. Gives them a nice tip when this happens. At 3 card poker I'll place a quarter beside my pair plus occasionally, especially after a decent hand. Last time in Vegas I hit 3 of a kind twice with a quarter for the delalers, $775 tip. same trip I was into a good shoe and dealer wanted me to parlay the BJ bet, after 4 wins gave him the $400. If I don't win any bets for them, I tip when I leave the table, never less than a quarter or two. Really doesn't matter how you tip as long as you do. I don't like the poolling of tips becasue the robot, or no personality dealer gets the same as one who makes the game fun, but that's the way it is, like it or not

A quarter tip? That's big money for most cruisers. I tip according to what I am betting. The more I am betting the more I tip. Normally for BJ I place a bet for them but I like your way of adding it to your bet so you can control the bet. It is frustrating putting a bet down for the dealers and having it pay off and not being able to parlay the bet or a portion of it. I had never thought of just adding to my bet and then giving them the winnings like that. I will have to use that next time.

For craps I mostly do the pass line bets with odds. I am amazed how shocked the cruise line craps dealers seem to be when you add odds to a $5 pass bet. I guess it doesn't happen that often. I also do a bunch of two-way hard ways bets if they seem to be hitting. Its also amazing how many times I find myself to be the only one tipping.

Its a service thing, provide good service and you should get tips. If you make my gaming experience more fun (and I have found many dealers that can make even loosing to be some entertainment) I will tip you. Be a jerk and you don't get tipped. I had a craps dealer on my last cruise that seemed to have a genuine dislike for the players (or at least the new ones). I had the dice and had a pass line bet on the table (with odds) for the crew and they swapped in this dealer. He was rushing everyone and very condescending to the couple of young ladies that showed up about the same time he started dealing. It was obvious that they were just learning and he was very nasty in explaining (no, more like demanding) that they place money down correctly (through the come box) etc... He made some comment to them that I thought was out of line right before I was going to toss the dice. I put the dice down looked at him and said "they are obviously new.. you don't need to berate them like that" and picked up the odds from the dealer's bet. I picked up the dice and threw the point. He got the message because for the rest of the cruise he was much nicer (at least when I was at the table) he got more tips from me later because he was a good dealer (paid correctly and learned my betting style quickly and reminded me when a bet went down and I forgot about it etc...)

And so it goes. Tips are tips... they are not mandatory but like anything else, if they are deserved they should be paid....

I will normally ask the dealers if they want a straight tip or for it to be played. Most want it played but not all. So I give them the option.

I agree that if a dealer shows me a good time I will even tip them if I am taking a bath at the tables. One of the best times I ever had at the tables was in AC, they switched the dealer and the new lady dealer came up and said "hello my name is <I can't remember her name> and you are all holding my money, give me 30 minutes and I will have all your chips here in my tray." I had a blast playing with her. Trash talking her when I won a hand and she did the same when she beat me. She flipped 3 J's in 3 card and started trash talking, then she flipped my 3 K's. Most people at the table, some older individuals hated her personality, but for me it was perfect and I loved playing against her.

I generally ask if they want the tip directly or if they want me to play it for them and, if so, then I put it wherever they want.

In Vegas las week the guy beside me bet the Small, Tall and All bets at $5 per spot and ended up hitting it...never seen a table go crazy like that before (not to mention the he had $25 on the Small and All and $50 on the Tall himself).

At craps I usually put their bet besides mine on the pass line. If I'm betting $5 I'll put a $1 bet for them, then back it with odds. I usually wait till I'm in a winning streak to do that. If I'm winning but it's on come bets (lots of numbers repeating, but not the pass line point) then I'll place the pass line for them (you put $5 or $6 across the edge of the pass line -- that places the point after it's been established, same as putting it up on the place numbers) and tell the stick man to "call the number". Not that this really makes the number roll, but it gets them rooting for you!

When I cash out (win or lose) I'll also usually give them the leftover smaller chips and call out "dealer's choice" for what they do with them. Sometimes I'll also bet a "Yo" for the dealers, or two-way Yo, probably if it's a cold table so no "hot streak" for pass line bets has come up.

Even though I'm a low roller and my tips aren't huge, sometimes if I start tipping it will remind some of the high rollers to tip, so dealers appreciate it for that reason also.

another good thing about putting their bet on top of yours, it's counted as your bet when figuring average bet

I'm not sure I understand. When you put a chip on yours on the pass line, do you put the same amt as your pass line bet? Then what about the odds? Or do you put it to the side and let them know it is for the dealer? You can put any amount you thin the dealers deserve. If you're betting $5 and want to bet $1 for the dealers you can. If you want to bet $5 for them you can do that, too. How I do it is by putting their bet on top of mine, then after winning I'll either give them the winning bet as a "Hand in" or I'll bet it next to mine. They know when it is next to a players bet it is a bet for them. They may not know that the extra chip on top of mine is theirs after it wins.

Can you place a $3 bet on a number even if the min table is $5? Or does table min mean the player has to put down a min of $5 and any amt on the other, place, field, hardways, etc? Thanks

Most casinos will allow you to make as little as a $1 bet for the dealers, doesn't matter if it's a Horn, C & E, field or place bet, as long as you say it's "For the boys (& girls)" it will usually be allowed.

Was this at Sam's Town or does another casino now offer that bet?

$4-5 is 1/2 of the federally mandated minimum wage, in certain states tipped positions are allowed to be paid less than minimum wage as long as the employer can show that their employees are making better than minimum wage when tips are included. At some of the downtown Las Vegas casinos (El Cortez, Western, Golden Gate) the dealers have been known to make as little as $20 per day in tips.
