Dickenson Beach is gone

For all you folks planning a cruise stop in Antigua, photos taken yesterday show that Dickenson Beach is no more. The sea has advanced 40 feet right up to Sandals' wall and there is no more beach. If you want to see for yourself:

It seems to be caused by ocean swell. Don't know if this is seasonal erosion and will retreat. It didn't happen last year.

Seasonal North swells, rolling Southward from N.Atlantic winter storms

do such coastal damage to a greater or lesser degree, annually

depending on the strength/severity of the swells being generated.

Unfortunately 'North Swell Season' happens to coincide exactly with cruise season

and much of the winter tourist season!

We can expect them anytime between October and March.

-every October to March (unless the N.Atlantic isn't doing it's thing...yeaahh right!)

By August that beach will be back, or mostly back.

The sand that was eroded is lying just offshore, probably no more than 50-100 yds. out there

and will be re-deposited, per hi tide, as Summer comes along.

It's temporary.

Come back in four or five months and see.

Wow, it's unrecognizable. :( What's the latest status? Anyone been in April?? We're planning to go back first week of May.

Wow I was on this beach last Sept 2009 we did not go to Sandles we took a tour that took us to the other end of this beach by Virgin airlines resort. It's a beauitful beach suger sands , calm waters, cute little sand crabs running around, pretty blue and clear water. We bought some kind of pie thing from a local vender I have no idea what all was it in but it was so good! it was a wonderful day at the beach and it sure did not look like these photos with high waters.
