travelteach326 Posted March 11, 2010 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2010 We have two double cabins booked on Carnival for a cruise later this month. We did not take trip insurance - coulda, shoulda woulda. One of the two people in one cabin needs to cancel. We are now in the 50% penalty for Carnival's cancellation policy. That leaves one person left in one cabin. Carnival now wants to charge the passenger who is left in the cabin a single rate. Not only does canival have half the fare from the cancelling passenger, now they want to get more money from the person who is left in the cabin. They want to charge her almost a double fare. If the remaining passenger goes into the other cabin - making that a triple, she losses half of her fare and then pays the triple rate. We cannot find anyone else to take the place of the cancelling passenger. We are even thinking of just not doing anything and have a no show situation. Has anyone ever had their traveling companion not show up on the day of sailing? Do they charge you on the ship for the single fare?

If a no show, no more money is charged and someone has a cabin all to themselves. Cheaper in the long run.
silverado44 Posted March 11, 2010 #3 Share Posted March 11, 2010 But the peron who cancelled would probably want their other 50% back.

If they don't show up then Carnival still has the money for the passenger that doesn't show up so they don't charge the other person anything. The passenger that doesn't show up is entitled to a refund on their port fees and taxes. I know cause this just happened on the last cruise we went on. My friends husband couldn't go at the last minute so the only thing they got back on his fare was the port fees and taxes which was $21.
firefly333 Posted March 11, 2010 #5 Share Posted March 11, 2010 Its often cheaper for the person who isnt going to be a no show, especially if the rate has gone up. the solo pax will then be charged at the current higher rate and maybe owe more for the cabin, than the originally booked rate. Iv seen folks this happened to. Tough call on the person who wants to cancel though. Hope they can come to terms. Maybe the person left in the cabin and the cancelling person can make a deal where the person left pays them half what they would get back, since its the fault of the person cancelling they are in the fix to be a solo now? All I can say is price it as a no show and if they cancel and see which comes out better.

What happens if you did need to change a name.....how much would that cost???? As stated, if you're booked Early Saver you CANNOT change the Names/Passengers on the Early Saver Booking. If booked otherwise, you can generally change names up to Final Payment for no cost, and threafter (maybe) for ~$50 cost. ken
jbknits Posted March 12, 2010 #11 Share Posted March 12, 2010 I cruised with a group about 5 years ago (on Carnival). I was in a triple and two others had a double. One of the two decided 5 days out that he wasn't going to go. Not that anything was refundable anyway, but I just moved into his spot creating two rooms with two people. They never cancelled his reservation and there were no issues.
salty dingo Posted March 12, 2010 #12 Share Posted March 12, 2010 It's not fair to the person who is left in the single cabin to pay more, but that's the chance you take when booking with someone unreliable. The fair thing would be to ask the person who is getting the 50% back for cancelling to give some of that money to the person who is left alone, to compensate for the higher fare. OTOH, the person sailing alone has more room to themselves, and that should in fact cost more money. That person is getting a higher space to passenger ratio! Best of luck to you all. Hope you can all still go.
travelteach326 Posted March 19, 2010 Author #13 Share Posted March 19, 2010 Thanks all for your help with this situation. The person who opted out of the cruise will leave her name on the reservation so the remaining passenger will not have to pay any more for her cabin. She feels the friend should not be penalized.
