Jewelry on Dolphin Excursions

Recommended Posts

We are hoping to take a dolphin excursion on our next cruise.

Somewhere I read that you should not wear jewelry when you

are in the water with them because they are attracted to

shiney things. Would stud earrings be a problem?? I can

understand hoops or bright and shiney earrings, but I thought

pearl earrings might be okay.

I doubt they'll jump out of the water and attack your ears.....

Don't wear bangly bracelets or anklets...that should be more than enough!

When our grandkids went "Swimming With The Dolphins" our oldest granddaughter was asked to remove her 'hoop' earrings. The other two that had only the small studs were deemed OK.

I never thought about it being an issue before that excursion, but it's good to know in advance.

When I swam with the dolphins, I had a small waterproof camera in my pocket. The dolphins would not get near me. The trainer asked if I had anything "on me". Once I removed the camera from my pocket, they came right up to me. Their sonar is amazingly sensitive and they can detect jewelry, change in your pocket or anything else.

I volunteer with an organization that rescues dolphins. When on a rescue we are asked to take off all hand and wrist jewelry so that it does not hurt the dolphin's skin. This is probably what they are referring to. Rings, etc can cause discomfort to the dolphins when handling.

I definitely wouldn't wear pearl studs in saltwater or even freshwater! I have to take off any of my pearl jewelry before I shower or wash my hands. Which is why I seldom wear it!

That was my first thought when I read this! I wouldn't even consider wearing my pearl earrings in salt water.............
