ESPN or ESPN deportes onboard Freedom?

Last July DW and I cruised on the Destiny and we had a great time (I guess we were lucky to not have to deal with the propulsion problems that so many have complained about). Anyway, the only gripe I had about the whole cruise was that I could not follow my beloved Boston Red Sox onboard because all of the Sportsbars had ESPN deportes. Is that a Carnival fleet-wide thing or was it a Carnival Destiny thing? We're crusin' on the Freedom this July and I would hope to be able to keep up with my baseball scores.

The same tv channels are fleet wide. Sometimes you can see ESPN I think in the sports bar, but not on your tv in your cabin.

We only got ESPN deportes on the boat and unfortunately they don't show American baseball scores. I've been on the Triumph back in '04 but I can't remember if they had ESPN or not. This cruise will be 8 days long and I don't wanna run up my roaming minutes trying to catch my scores on my phone.

I dont know if it was "Deportes" or not ... I only said they showed ESPN in the bar (with the sound off), so it could have been in spanish, could only watch it... and several different sports, so they had more than one version on various tvs around the bar when I was in there, none with sound. We were playing trivia and Im just saying we could see sports.

So you checked the sports bar more than once?? I do know we got soccer with spanish I saw by the casino ...so that must be your depotes version.

Again, as I said above ... the channels are fleet wide ..so you see the same ones from one ship to the next. I miss FOX news on Carnival, which RCL shows, instead of CNN.

Um..I checked the bar daily. I'm a sports fanatic and I like to keep up with my teams. I checked every location where there was a TV and it was ESPN Deportes. I am very familiar with the sports channels. The regular ESPN channels (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS) have scores and game schedules at the bottom of the screen at all times.

The sportsbar on the Freedom had regular ESPN on the night that we watched the Syracuse / Villanova game and like ESPN at home other scores were scrolling at the bottom of the screen.

Another option is the use the internet cafe and check the scores. I think the price was 75 cents a minute with a 3.95 sign up cost. Fairly pricey but if you need the information you need the information.

A 3rd option would be to just kick back and enjoy the cruise knowing that it is a long season and there will be plenty left of it when you get back.

I emailed Carnival asking whether I can get the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four onboard, and the reply I received stated that the ship gets the following channels:

CBS CNN Domestic Boomerang (cartoons)

NBC CNN International Cartoon Network

ABC CNN En Espanol ESPN International (Sports Bar only; not broadcast in the staterooms)

CNBC TNT

First, disclaimer, I haven't sailed Carnival since 07 so I am not up to date on their TV listings, however, for obvious reasons we all understand they pick up some channels off of the satellites. I am not sure what system specifically they use but people mention the national networks are the "local" Denver stations.:)

Now, that said, I DO live down here in the Caribbean and our national TV pulls satellite feeds for our TV, maybe even the same system as our ABC or CBS is out of Denver, I think our FOX is as well, our NBC is out of Miami though. I have lived here for 16 months now with Fox Sports Soccer, SportsMax (seems to be a British version of ESPN2), ESPN Desportes, and this dinky ESPN channel called ESPN live that I have never seen in the states even on some black boxed satellite feeds.

It is a quirky channel, seemingly picking up the "largest" live sports event going on at the moment though how they determined what was larger is beyond me. Sometimes its the tennis stuff from NBS, sometimes NFL from CBS, very often it is Euro soccer, etc. etc. As an ESPN channel, it doesn't only show ESPN feeds (like ABC) but will show anything live and sometimes even with a quicker relay than NBC or CBS. ESPN live NEVER has scrolling scores, all you will see is "LIVE" or "ESPN LIVE" in the upper corner and you get some ESPN sportscenter commercials. Our Desports channel does stream scores but the emphasis is definitely NOT on non-soccer.

My point is, we've heard of Carnival showing the Super Bowl, BCS Championship, World Series games, NCAA basketball games even though all they have is the "soccer ESPN" which makes me believe its more that ESPN Live.....that channel shows all the above mentioned sports, no scrolling scores, it is an ESPN channel and you'll see ESPN commercials...but thats all just speculation on my part.... I'd suggest if they are that important to you to pay by the minute to just check scores online every hour or so because it would end up costing you less I think than streaming such data to your phone. :o

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check with the bartender in the Sportsbar to see if he can change to the regular ESPN. If not, I'll probably hit up the internet cafe every couple of days to check for scoring updates.

Happy cruising all!

Just watch the news on the Denver ABC,NBC OR CBS feeds. That will give you score updates.

I'll check that also but on my cruise last year we got the Denver stations and I swear I never saw any score updates and I was most certainly looking.

I talking about the news, when the sportscaster comes on to give all the scores.

You mean all the Denver scores. They didn't do a lot of league-wide analysis (that is the Denver Fox station didn't). But they did manage to totally ruin the Top Chef finally for me.

 When the sportscaster comes on s/he will give ALL the scores. While they might focus on the local team, they will still show the other scores.

Not necessarily. Some do, some don't. (Just try getting Philadelphia scores on a NYC channel when it's not a playoff race and Philadelphia isn't playing an NYC team.) There is no hard and fast rule about what a newscaster has to cover.

Exactly. They only gave local scores from the Denver station last year. I didn't know that some stations only give local scores.

Hmm I have never cruised in Baseball season. They always give the NBA scores each night and NFL scores...including highlights.
