Anyone else with Vertigo or Menier's Disease cruise with any problems

Recommended Posts

I think I may be suffering from Meniere's disease or some other cause of Vertigo. Its only been about 2 weeks and waiting to see my ear, nose and throat doctor again for a follow up. The first time i went he thought maybe Meniere's disease was a possibility and said to give it a month or 2 as it may clear up.. I am just wondering if anyone else suffers from it and have cruised and did it affect you with the motion of the ship etc. I would like to hear from your experiences if anyone out there suffers from it also. Thanks

I had this posted on the Carnival board and will post on this board also for a few more comments as I am interested in others experiences with this ..

My daughter has realllly bad motion sickness. Any car drive longer than 30 minutes and she gets sick. I mostly give her children's gravol for motion sickness, but didn't want he drugged up for our whole cruise. Just before leaving, I went into the Merritt Island Wal-mart to buy/try sea-bands. While I was there, I found a product called "motion-eaze". It was AMAZING!!!!! She did not get sick once. It is an herbal product that I suppose works on the basis of aromatherapy. The last night of our March 6th sailing (OMG!) was a true test of how good this product is.

Before leaving Cape Caneveral, we went back to that Wal-mart to buy a few more bottles of this stuff ~ liquid gold from where I stand.

I had posted about this at Carnival, and someone in their response to me noted that the website mentions that the product is also good for Vertigo. My mom has vertigo, so I will be giving her one of my treasured bottles to try to see if ti helps her. If you can find this locally .... you may want to give it a try.

I have Menieres and have no problem Cruising. My medication for the dizzy spells is Cinnerazine and that is the very thing they give for motion sickness. My specialist said that with my medication I will be better than everybody else on board!

Good Luck

I have Benign Positional Vetigo.....cruising actually helps me, I think its a counter reaction.....on land its a different story, I lose my balance and I can topple over on any uneven surface...and have done so many times! So embarrassing!!!

I do get post cruise sensation ...that is so annoying cause it can last up to 3 weeks!

I have Vertigo and still cruise. I've used the patch, scopolomine pills, & meclezine. Can't say one is really any better than the other and individually they all have their own positives & negatives. There are certain areas of the ship that are more bothersome to me than others (I rarely go to the shows & when I do stay in the back so I can make a quick exit) and I frequently have at least one sea day that I'm not up to par.

That said it doesn't keep me home.................... :)

We're cruising next month and I'm trying the Relief Band for the first time. (not to be confused with Sea Bands) I'll still bring the scopolomine prescription with me, but I'm hoping I won't need to take the pills and the Relief Band will do the job.

In the last month, The Washington Post had an article in the Health/Science section about a now recognized problem that usually starts after time on a boat. For some people it can last for years, for most a few days or weeks only. A true test of this problem is if you are moving you are O.K. Also, the symptoms are worse in a small space. I'm sorry I don't remember the date but it was possibly the week of the 21st. It might be worth researching the on-line Washington Post.

Shon has Meniers and swears that cruising makes it better. Of course, sometimes the Meniers is better than others anyway but he says that the slight motion of the ship makes him feel more steady. Seems strange to me but I have seen him sway like he's on the water when we are on land so I guess it makes sense.

Anyway, the Meniers does not make his cruise any less enjoyable.

Thank you so much for the link. I was going to look for the article this morning. Both my husband and I experience this ballance problem for a few days after a cruise, but longer for me if I use a small space powder room.

Hi, I have Meniere's disease and have cruised before and after it was diagnosed. I have never had trouble while on the cruise but frequently have trouble for a while after I get off. Honestly, I have to say that it might be due to me not following my low salt diet while on the cruise. My ENT has recommended I take Sudafed or similiar every 4 hours starting two days prior to flight/cruise. I will be trying it for the first time on my upcoming April cruise. I feel for you. It took me two years of off and on Veritgo to finally go to a doctor. It's an awful feeling but luckily it has never bothered me on any cruise!!

My 78 (soon to be 79) yr old mother suffers from vertigo. It isn't a constant thing but she does get it every few months.

She has never had vertigo on a cruise but has gotten it after flying on occasion. Her dr has rx'd her pills that don't work that great but I found some exercises that you do while laying in bed to alleviate the vertigo.

Hi My DH saw this thread and said I should comment. I hope I am not too late. I have Meniers. I do not take medication on a daily basis. I try and watch my sodium and caffeine. I also can feel the effects when I do not get enough rest. I try and turn in early maybe once or even twice if I need to on a week long cruise. I do not seem to have any problems when on the ship but have noticed that sometimes up to 2 weeks after I get home I can be really dizzy. I think it depends on how rough the seas are on the cruise. If I feel it a bit more during the week I might be more dizzy when I get home. Also what some of the other posters have said about the motion sickness pills that would help too. I hope you have an enjoyable cruise. You get to learn how to deal with Menier's and it just becomes part of your life with no real changes.

Cindy
