my husband & I are about to be first time cruisers. We can only go somewhere in August, and we don't do well in the heat. Where would you recommend going for a first cruise that's fun, interesting, not boring, and not too hot?

Thanks

Alaska, Hawaii, or a New England/Canada coastal cruise. Avoid the Caribbean/Mediterranean during August if you don't like hot and humid!

Alaska - August cruising is expensive, but a good time to go. 7-12 nights, depending on cruise line. Princess and HAL have great cruise/tours.

Hawaii - a 15-day r/t from the West Coast, or a 7-night (NCL Pride) and you have to fly r/t to Honolulu. Weather is pretty moderate.

New England/Canada coastal. Too early for fall foliage colors, and it's Hurricane Season, even there. Can be comfortably cool, or very hot & humid. Transitional weather.

Baltic/Russia/Australia. Cooler weather and plenty of $$$$! Australia's August is like our March. (But March in Florida is not like March in Colorado!)

It's really all about luck. Enjoy whatever you decide!

Unfortunately, none of the cruiselines currently have a RT to Hawaii scheduled for August. Those start in late September and run thru to early May.

I would think the Alaskan cruises or the New England ones would fit your requirements. Our Alaskan cruise was in mid-August, and we left temps in Southern California of over 105 degrees and a few days later were on a cruise ship with temps around 60 degrees. Alaska has an interesting history to it and beautiful scenery when your ship tours glaciers.

We went on our first cruise in 2008 for our 20th anniversary and we went in August to Alaska. The scenery there was absolutely beautiful. We were on the Westerdam (HAL). We enjoyed it so much we bought future cruise credit while on board and we are going to the Mediterranean in May.

Where do you live in Canada?

If you are anywhere near Toronto or even Montreal a lot of people just drive down to the NY/NJ ports. There are a number of choices from NY & NJ, mostly NE/CAN, Bermuda or eastern Caribean.

Of course if you are near the west coast I would suggest a cruise out of Vancouver.

As others have mentioed, Alaska or Canada is certainly safe from the temperature perspective. I would also suggest looking at the Caribbean. I know the temps are going to be warmer, but the ship has air, while the ship is moving you'll also enjoy yhe sea breezes, and I think you can find a much better value on these sailings.

Where you live in Canada might decide your best course.

Out of New York, you can get great cruises to Maritime Canada and New England. We did 7 days on the Caribbean Princess and absolutely loved it.

Also, out of New York, there are great cruises to Bermuda.

From the West Coast, an Alaskan cruise would be great for August.

Alaska leaps to mind, but it's such an obvious choice I wonder if you in fact already thought of it and it didn't appeal to you for some reason. By "fun" do you need someplace with water sports, casinos, etc.? What possibilities might appeal to you? New England/Canada? Northern Europe?

Late July through mid September are the hottest time of year in Hawaii. It's also when the trade winds sometimes diminish for days at a time. While it won't be the stifling heat and humidity of the Caribbean, it would be hot and somewhat humid.

Also, I cannot recommend a mainland-Hawaii round-trip cruise for anyone's first time. There is no possible way that they could know whether they would enjoy that many sea days (at least 8--4 going and 4 returning).

Alaska or New England-Canada or Scandinavia or the British Isles.
