Things people do that make it obvious they are cruise virgins

These are definite signs of a new cruiser. I know I was guilty of some of them myself when I went on my first cruise. Like these ones.

* Walking around the ship with a dropped jaw the entire first day.

* Going "w-o-o-o-o-o-o-w" at everything on the ship.

* Taking countless pictures, ranging from the city skyline from the ship to close-ups of safety signs.

* Trying to find a way to get to the bow of the ship (or at least as close as possible), so you can stand there with your arms spread out to the sides.

* Simply not understanding how someone doesn't enjoy the food on the ship. Hey, it's food on a cruise.

* Buying and proudly wearing clothes with the cruise line's logo on them while on shore excursions.

* Using nautical terminology (forward/aft/port/starboard) in every conversation you can find an excuse to do it.

* Joining every audience participation dance the crew tries to start.

* Realizing that the whole day passed and you never stopped smiling.

A classic dodge here is that they put them in "souvenir glasses" which you are automagically charged for as well, so your "welcome aboard" drink is frequently $10 or more.

Nothing wrong with being a newbie and going WOW at everything:D, it'd be a shame if you weren't impressed by it all, no point cruising if the gloss and excitement is gone.

I kept my card on a lanyard on the first cruise and will do so on my next and 2nd cruise. Don't want to cart a purse/handbag or a bag of any description around if I don't have to, don't always have pockets and would be scared I'd lose the darn thing if I carried it. Actually this time I am going to buy a nice lanyard, last time had the casino one, looked a bit cheap.:D

You're definitely a cruise "n00b," if you tell the ice cream vendor on deck that he should "totally work at 31 Flavors!" Because, you know, he's never heard that one before...

Or if you make a reference to either Titanic, Poseidon, or any other disaster cruise movie during the muster drill... more than once. I still to this day will make just a tiny reference here or there to my closest friend or family member I'm cruising on, but it's always hilarious to hear the new cruisers loudly exclaim how this is just like that scene where Jack and Rose are running through the main stairwell... several times.

Well I plan on fitting the bill perfectly for newbie ststus! I hope I don't embarress any of my shipmates. I will be the one walking in the wrong direction to everything wearing my lanyard and having the awestruck expressions!!! But after years of wanting to take a cruise I finally get to so I'm going to enjoy every minute!

I am going on my 8th cruise and I still wear my sign and sail around my neck on a lanyard so it is always available when I need it and so I won't lose it. I don't carry a purse on a cruise and I don't always have pockets so I have nowhere to put it except around my neck

Carry the Newsletter of the Day with a highlighter around as they are racing from event to event and tell their life story to any cruise personnel that will listen.

And they attend all of the art shows just for the bad champagne

Sorry, I can say this because this is exactly what we did on our first cruise 10 years ago on RCCL.

Participating in the mob/riot scene at the on-board watch sale. It was like watching people fight over the last pork chop on the plate! But it was amusing to watch from a distance.

Agreed, people think they are getting a deal. On one cruise I forgot my watch, the cruise ship was having a sale so I picked up one for $10. It only told time & that's what I wanted.:) I can't see why people go for Rolex's etc anyway.

Getting stung with 'The Welcome Aboard Cocktail'..... you know that nice one many people think is free when the waiter with the tray of nice drinks approaches you prior to sailaway and your just finding you way round.

'Welcome Aboard Cocktail Mam / Sir'...... Oh yes please - how wonderful .... how nice ....... 'Sign here please Mam / Sir'...... ouch too late you've taken a large sip through the straw..... $6.95 plus tip ..... make that times 2 as your better half has done likewise.....

Lol yes It's those flashing cups that entice you!!

I am so guilty of alot of these! (took over 400 hundred pictures and kept calling the ship a boat. Whoops!) But it was good that I cruised with novice cruisers.

Something I also saw was people getting stung by the fresh squeezed orange juice they had in the buffet every morning during my cruise. I saw alot of people take one and then have the awkward face when they were asked for their Seapass and then charged for their orange juice. I didn't fall in the trap, thankfully!

I was on the Noordam (HAL) in January 2013 and they had fresh orange juice at no cost. They put the oranges in the top of the machine and out came orangejuice.

As for drinking, I don't touch the stuff - doctors orders. Saves me a bundle of money:)

I've been on 12 cruises and I swear that the instructions are to put your life jacket on, and then proceed quickly and safely to your muster station...not drag the jacket along behind you so the pax behind you trip on the straps...

Not for years, on any ship I've been on.

I have usually been able to time it right where i skip the drilll.

Every ship I have been on lately hunts people down who don't make the drill--and check us off when we get to our muster station. How do you manage that? Actually, I don't need to know as I will always go to the muster drill anyway, boring as they get to be.

It used to be a lot easier to skip muster drills.

That post you quoted is 3 years old.;)

Oops, sorry, I was just reading these posts for fun and didn't look at the dates. I'm not sure even 3 years ago muster drills were still run like that.

I remember one of our first muster drills, back in the 70's, where everyone stood in lines on deck, with life jackets on, in horribly steamy heat. More than one person got sick and collapsed, and I definitely did not feel good. About 45 minutes of standing in close-packed lines in the heat wearing heaters, er life jackets, was a bad way to start a cruise.

The modern muster drills are so much better in every way.

Hey, no need to be sorry - we've all responded to old posts at some time or other.;):p But, you know, you've got a point. I can't remember which of my cruises was the first to not require a life vest to be worn at muster drill. I know for sure that 2008 on NCL Pearl we had to wear them. But I don't know if we did for 2009 Carnival Pride...

And I agree - love not having to wear the vest and can go straight from muster drill to wherever we want, not straight back to the cabin to stow the vest!:)

I know the posts are old but our first cruise we were really impressed with the people who had lanyards, instead of always trying to find somewhere to keep the card... (DH's pocket!) newbie mistake?!

Have to say, if I'm not feeling 'wow' about my holiday, why would I waste the money? We met a couple on our first cruise who just told us about all the ways they had 'saved', including spending the day in a hot dusty port with nothing to see & laughing at us for paying $100 to see the pyramids because it was ''a rip off'' - then spent the evening complaining about how awful their day was while we reminisced about our awesome ours was (crazy Eygptian hawkers aside). I never want to be that jaded.

I find it amusing that some think it's a sure sign that one is a 'cruise noob' if she:

A. Wears her Seapass card around her neck on a lanyard

(or)

B. Carries a purse

At least one poster, way back on this old thread thought both choices were ridiculous and stated something to the effect of "you don't need anything in that purse". Really? So nice of you to decide that for me.

Not all of us wear clothes with pockets all the time. I wear a lot of skirts and sundresses on cruises. They don't have packets. And I choose not to wear a lanyard. So I do carry a small purse on cruises. And I do use several things from that purse throughout the day, everyday.

How one chooses to carry her Seapass/ Sail & Sign Card is not a reflection of how many cruises she has taken, but just a personal choice. Your way is not the only way, people.

I always carry my purse. I have my cruise card/sail and sign card, my coffee card, the daily newsletter, small notebook and pen (which others tend to "borrow" since no one else has it readily available), my camera (or smartphone camera) so I'm always prepared to capture a good picture or moment, and my kindle since it fits in my purse and I like to read between activities. I don't have my wallet since that gets put into the safe when I board. I'm always prepared for whatever I want to do and don't have to back to the cabin to get anything. It's a matter of convenience and I don't really care if anyone thinks I'm a newbie. ;)
