Things people do that make it obvious they are cruise virgins

You might be a newbie if....

 

you grab a snack from the in-room minibar.

 

you broke your toe on the way into the bathroom

 

you made 45 minute phone calls from your cell phone at every port of call to tell everyone what a great time you are having.

 

you get caught bringing booze on the boat.

 

you spend at least one night sleeping by the toilet.

 

you barf into the wind.....

 

Somehow I have personally avoided these mistakes, perhaps it was from watching others misfortunes.

I'm reading through these and realizing that even though i'm about to go on our 3rd cruise, i'm clearly still a newbie! lol

 

The day I stop gawking at my surroundings and the enormous beauty of the ship, is the day i stop cruising.

I was just thinking the same thing Im going on my 3rd cruise in August.. I still like my drink when I get on board and Im always amazed by the size of the ships... My hubby and I still eat util we cant eat no more, and I keep my suitcase out..LOL.. And yes we call it our hotel room.. LOL

A classic dodge here is that they put them in "souvenir glasses" which you are automagically charged for as well, so your "welcome aboard" drink is frequently $10 or more.

 

I was strong enought to quit, after I got all seven different =X= glasses. When asked why I am going to Alaska again, I could say I am missing a glass.

 

Fourteen day cruise means about 3000 photos, I used 24 rolls of film on a seven day cruise.

Muster drill, I have to fight down the urge to yell, Dress Right Dress.

A newbie always gets off the elevator and goes the wrong way, only to return in a minute or two.

On my first cruise I did:

 

Purse - I NEVER go anywhere with out my purse(anything happens my purse goes with me)(I use a smaller one with wallet, cellphone, and stuff i need daily)

Card on lanyard- most people I know use it for their regular jobs, I see nothing wrong with doing it

Can't find my room- I'm normally navigation challenged in nature, so not finding my cabin was very entertaining for DH and Cabin Steward. (Steward got an extra tip end of cruise for helping me).

Broke my heel(rubber came off) on way to formal night-didn't care got them fixed at shoemaker when I got home. No one knew it was broken but me.

I did not over pack I think less is more anyhow.

I do take a lot of pics when traveling guilty(I have a 4G memory card in my camera)

The Carnival Conquest is was "huge" ship to me.

 

Guilty of all the above offenses :)

As others have said, I'll always be awed by the size of the ship! I love to look around and see as much as possible.

 

Interesting that some thing S&S cards on a lanyard make you look like a newbie. Like many others here, I wear a badge at work and it hangs from a lanyard--so used to it. I would think that thinking of bringing a lanyard or getting one once you board would indicate you've cruised before not that you're a newbie. :)

 

I am guilty of overpacking, but I get better with each cruise.

 

For me, what signifies a newbie is taking all your excursions through the cruiseline for fear you'll miss the ship. We prefer the more personal experience with a vendor than the 50 to 100 people on a ship's tour. We've never even come close to missing the ship. :)

Amen! I feel the same way. Of course I'm a photographer on the side, so I will be the one standing around taking pictures of every little thing...including the elevator or whatever may be around. :D And photographers take many pictures of the same thing...just to make sure you get the perfect workable shot. Then, we you are doing HDR pictures, it's the same picture at different exposures combined...yea, I may be in one spot for awhile. hehe :eek:

 

Even though I'm not a newbie to cruises...I'm a poser I guess. :)

Not a newbie but reformed underpacker. Had too many bad experiences...burned dress with travel iron, ripped dress with hanger, spilled something on dress, caught hem of dress in heel of shoe while going down stairs, snagged dress on arm of chair (just to name a few). You name it, I've done it, if it involves a dress.

Okay, unpacking my lanyard that I bought special for the trip. Removing the 4 memory cards for my camera, repeating, "Do not wear flotation vest to Muster Drill" over and over in my head..............:o

I've been on 8 cruises and still take a TON of pictures... but I also do that at home so... I think it's normal (my DH on the other hand thinks I am crazy). :D I'm already trying to figure out which camera(s) to bring and if I should buy an underwater (really, really want one). :)

 

As I've gotten into scrapbooking now, I take lots of photos and pick the best ones. I DO drive my family crazy though, having my camera with me everywhere. And, strangely, I'm never IN many of the photos, :rolleyes:

I've actually walked up to someone with a pocket sized mirror and held it up in from of someone when that person had their makeup half on/off. We laughed but she didn't see the humor. :eek:

I still consider myself a newbie especially since it had been NINE years between my 2nd and 3rd cruise (last year on Liberty). I was so stinkin' excited that I was skipping up the gangway, signed for the Welcome Aboard drinks and skipped/ran/skipped all the way to our cabin. Not to mention this was my first cabin with a balcony so I was just in awe that the room didn't feel so small. My poor husband, it was his first cruise and yet he was telling me to contain myself!:o

 

One more thing.... posing for every single photo op with the ship's photographers and buying all the pictures. :p (They were GREAT pictures!)

A newbie stands in the first buffet line they come to instead of looking around to see if that is even the line they want to be in. (poor DH STILL does this) Every cruise I hear "oh, I didn't want salad"

 

After losing my S&S card in a slot machine I do wear the lanyard to the casino, that way I can't walk off without my card. I prefer the coil type things though.

Getting stung with 'The Welcome Aboard Cocktail'..... you know that nice one many people think is free when the waiter with the tray of nice drinks approaches you prior to sailaway and your just finding you way round.

 

'Welcome Aboard Cocktail Mam / Sir'...... Oh yes please - how wonderful .... how nice ....... 'Sign here please Mam / Sir'...... ouch too late you've taken a large sip through the straw..... $6.95 plus tip ..... make that times 2 as your better half has done likewise.....

OMG, I'm laughing so hard right now. I thought we were the only ones who fell for that. I didn't even like it or want it but was too embarrassed to decline after I found out it wasn't free!!

Newbies would buy the Lanyard from the Cruise line. Old Salts bring their own from home.

Oh no! Im heading out on my 7th &8th cruise in six short months. I still wear the lanyard with my S&S card around my neck. However, my lanyard is a sparkley, beaded one! Does that make a difference?:o

We will be taking our 25th RCL cruise and I still use a lanyard as I do not want to have to carry a purse or take a chance on snapping the card in half by having it in my pocket.

Instead of focusing on having their own fun, they keep looking around at others and pointing out how unsophisticated the supposed "virgins" are as compared to their own jaded, world-weary selves.:p

 

Actually, I find seeing the "WOW!!!" reactions to be refreshing, knowing someone has had a momentously impressive moment on what will hopefully be a cruise PACKED with many more such moments.
