Do you have family or friends that just don't get it? (this cruising obsession)

Do you have someone who thinks you are from another planet when you start talking about cruising?

I have one sister-in-law who went on a cruise (Carnival) that was work related and paid for by her employer. She and my brother had a balcony cabin. Well, we told them they would love it (first cruise for both). Well, you guessed it, she HATED it. She didn't just dislike it, it was HATE. She said NEVER AGAIN. Now my mother and I have cruised together several times and it has become our vacation of choice, (followed by a week at Red Rock in Vegas, we LOVE that place). My sister joined us, with her family on Royal for my cousin's 50th birthday cruise, they liked it, although they are not gaga like my mom and I are. My other brother has never cruised but his wife and her 3 kids have. So here's the deal: my other cousin, who is a TA wants to do a family reunion cruise. Guess everyone in the family will go except one brother and wife. Oh well.

Also, I have been single for a long time. When someone would tell me they wanted me to meet someone I would reply with a question. In my 20's I'd ask if he was good looking. In my 30's I'd ask what he did for a living. On my 40's I'd ask if he was a kind person with integrity. Now I'm in my 50's, I ask "does he like to go on cruises?". Haha.

Oh, I definitely do! In 2007, my husband and I decided to take an Alaskan cruise for our 5th anniversary. Out of the blue, we decided to call my dad and his wife to see if they were interested. Well, they were and so were my aunt and uncle, so the six of us were on the Pearl in September of 2007 and had the BEST time! We are all going on a 10-day Canada/New England on the Jewel this September!:) We have been trying to convince my other aunt & uncle to come along, but are just not having any luck!:( My one aunt is absolutely convinced that she would not have a good time (even though she has never cruised before)!!! My uncle has finally said that he thinks he might actually have a good time and might be interested - but my aunt - absolutely not!:( I have given up trying to convince them to come along, but I KNOW they would have such a good time if they came along!:p

Different strokes for different folks.

Not everyone will like teh same things. I know people who LOVE skiing.

I have no use for cold and snow so flying down a mountain freezeing my butt off is pretty much my idea of hell *LOL*

Hey God bless them, let them enjoy their thing. i will be on a nice deck chair in the caribbean havinga drink enjoying mine :)

Just returned yesterday from Med. cruise on the Jade, sailed from Barcelona on 3/28--I've got the cruise blues!!!

Now, to find someone who needs a cruise roommate! Actually, this was my third cruise in a year so I better wait a few months at least before folks start to wonder what's wrong with me.

yep, two of our three kids, especially one of them. She was on 2 cruises, 1, a weekender out of L.A way back in college about 25 years ago. From the stories I think all 12 of them were under the influence the entire 48 hours: infuence of what I will leave that one alone. The other our son. He and x went on a 4 day Carnival cruise for their honeymoon. I am not sure they came out of the cabin, again, I will leave that one alone, but he thought cruising was something you did when you wanted to order grilled cheese sandwhiches and have them delivered. Oh, the daughter, she did go on one 5 dayer with her sister and I about 10 years ago. Her problem with that, she likes to have freedom. I think we are about to break her down, she and hubby, who has never cruised might do NCL with us next year. By the way, his family loves to cruise, anything from mass marketed lines to the top but he isn't sure he would like it.

In general we have found over the year that many find excuses to not cruise. When the actually try it, they are hooked. I know of only one person who did not like the cruise (Carnival). His wife loved it though, so I think he will have to try yet another. This time I hope he tries another line.

Absolutely; one in particular is my brother.

The difference is that he travels all over the world in his line of work. Plus he and his wife have traveled to many destinations by air/land as well. So they enjoy having more time at each destination, visiting remote areas and spending quality time among the people who live there. They feel trapped at sea and feel robbed with the little amount of time spent at each port.

While there is merit to what they are saying...To us, the ship is the destination, as well as being at sea. Plus, we get to visit a wide variety of ports that would take too many years for us to get to by air/land. We think it's the best bang for our buck over all. :)

I am in the same bind! I have the time to cruise often, and the casino play to comp me, but can't find a good, compatible partner (hopefully someone who can contribute to my casino play)! Hubby can only travel once or twice per year, kids are way too busy, and all my friends either have demanding jobs or small children to take care of..

As to the thread title, that person used to be ME. I had cruised some when my children were smaller, and just didn't get it - it was just OK, certainly not my style.. I was far too active, kids were too demanding, old-school cruising (dressing up, table mates, etc) did not appeal to me AT ALL, and I spent most of the time planning and going on long, exotic land-based vacations - they seemed to fit our vacation style better than cruising. Then, just a few years ago when my kids were pretty much grown and enjoyed the freedom of the ship, I rediscovered cruising.. The longer, more exotic itineraries were very intriguing at first, and later I started to really enjoy sailings with more sea days.. I think that NCL suites really sealed the deal. Now I just can't stay away and start jonesing for my next cruise on the day I return from the last one! I just have to convince my friends and family how great it is after so many years of saying I didn't really like cruising!

Hey

What are ya drinkin' my friend *LOL*

Went skiing with a group of friends once. Stood out there freezeing and while they were explaining things to me.

One sign has one diamond , that is the beginner slope

one sign had two diamonds , that is the intermediate slope

three diamonds ....expert slope.

Then I saw a sign I understood. It was a neon Budweiser sign in the lodge.

That is where I stayed until my friends were finished skiing *LOL*

Had a ball hanging out with the rest of the good folks hanging around waiting for the friends to get off the slopes

Great Topic!

Been in the cruise business almost 12 years now and have cruised all my life! Love everything about it any ship any time I am happy.

My brother in law (who knows everything) hates the idea of cruising. He has never been but loves to say how cruises are boring and he doesnt want to be stuck on a floating city etc.

This drives me nuts as he has NEVER been on one. I think I figured out his problem though, I found out recently he doesnt know how to swim :)

I love cruising. I think it is the best vacation. We are going on our first suite on May 1st (NCL JEWEL) so from what I hear, the experience will be even greater.

My Father always wants us all to go on a all inclusive resort with my brothers family and mine but I really prefer to do a cruise. He says better and bigger rooms. I know people who have complained because of bugs in their rooms at resorts. I love the cleanliness of the ship plus I like going to the Casino at night. Where at a resort, the casino may be quite big and loose that friendly atmosphere.

I love cruises and always will. I am just waiting for that beer card to start up instead of a soda card :D

The majority of our friends do not understand why we like cruises. Not that any of them have ever tried, they come up with lame excuses why it is not for them. Everybody on this forum has heared all of them before I guess:

-I can't swim

-I'll get seasick

-I'm afraid the ship will sink

-Everybody gets Noro on a ship

-I will feel too confined

-I have to forcefully mix with other people, sitting at dinner with strangers

-It's expensive

-It is only for over the top posh wannabee people

-I don't have any formal wear

-There are only old people with purple hair on cruises

-The only activity is bingo or karaoke

-The shows will be tacky and feature has-been stars who can't sing

Although I realise that cruising is not for everybody, we think the people we have tried to convince would really like it. They like going to Spas or all-inclusive resorts and other similar things. We have given up. In fact, we don't tell folks around here anymore because they get jealous and think we are rich.

I think some of the biggest complainers about cruises have never been on one! What's up with that?

It's only been a little over a year since I went on my first cruise and I am ADDICTED! :D

But I would never tell seriously tell someone they will love cruising, because everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I'm with those of you who don't like the snow! I don't like to be cold, tried skiing once and really disliked it.

I would just say what I like about cruising and it's up to them to try it or not. Then they can't hate on me if they go and don't have fun. lol

I have several friends who have tried cruising and disliked it. They won't cruise again and it doesn't bother me in the least. I have other friends who have no desire to cruise. Again, doesn't bother me in the least.

I have no desire to sky dive or climb the Himalayas. Why do we all need to enjoy the same types of vacations? ;)

We love to cruise for our own reasons, some of which we probably haven't analyzed. Therefore, we may emphasize stuff about cruising that doesn't appeal to the people we would like to convert.

I've come to the conclusion to leave them alone. They may have their own set vacation plans (visit family, go to the place they met so many years ago) which may not include the expense of a cruise. Personally, I just budget so I can do it. WE know it's a lot of bang for the buck, and is worth the cost. Others just may not think so, and are not willing to budget.

My sister just says, "we don't cruise" in the same way she says, "we don't fly." So, that's that. Took my adult children and they're sold! That's very convenient for me because my DH doesn't always want to take the time to cruise, although he enjoys it when he actually gets on board. I think he doesn't like the staying in a hotel the night before, etc.

that is interesting, our older daughter travels all over the world as well. In fact in the next few months she will probably have business on every continent except Artartica and yet, she would rather cruise than take any other type of vacation. I think that is because of all her land travel.

Coworkers that have never cruised. One says she's doesn't like water although the idea of a cruise appeals to her, she's not going to do it. Another says she'd be too bored, not able to hop in her car and drive. That's a selling point for me.:) Another is well, still supporting her adult children instead of making them grow up. And then we have the doom and gloom guy who doesn't think he deserves any happiness in this world. Fun bunch.:o

This is a fun thread. :D I think we all know someone that says they hate it and 99% of them have never cruise ;) The one I love is we have friends that love to vacation in warm climates and just relax on the beach with a cold beer yet their reason for not cruising is they are so sure they will be bored to death  Just cannot convince them otherwise.

Then there is my dear 83 year old Mother that went on her first cruise a 3 day Party cruise out of LA about 20 years ago (Obviously she never went again). She is convinced they are dangerous.

It's so funny we discovered cruising in 1999, and have been hooked since. We wonder now why we did not do it before. For us it is great!

Hubby has a very stressful job, so he likes to go and totaly let down and relax. I however, like to go and go on a vacation. Cruising offers us the best for both of us. Wether it is sitting on our balcony or sitting by the pool reading and watching people, he has the vacation he needs.

For me and DS, we get to run around as we want. Keep busy, from shows, to events, to swimming, ect....

But, some of my family think I am crazy for doing the same type of vacation everytime.

The others part is beginging to get on the groove. Sister just went on her first cruise last year and is booked again in 2011. Brother and family are going on their first cruise this August. I know they will be hooked.

Thank goodness cruising is not for everyone, or the ships would be so full, they would be no room for us really fun folks.

Have fun cruising.

Nancy

VERY well said, Nancy :D. And can you imagine the price hikes for the major demand? ?? I LOVE to cruise, but just smile and keep my mouth shut when people tell me they just don't understand why I like it so much- of course those are the people that haven't ever cruised! Let them stay on land, and we will keep our cruising wonderland :p.
