Is there free WIFI on Carnival Liberty? Or is there a fee if I use my laptop? Not sure how that all works....Thanks!

Nope. The WiFi is not free. You have to purchase time. It's also really, really slow. I'm sure someone here will have all the details for you shortly.

75 cents a minute or less if you buy a package. I think it generally was $55 for 100 minutes, but they have some specials where when you buy you get extra minutes so the prices vary.

We had a special down to 40 cents a minute on Ecstasy that was very good.

$3.95 set up fee for your laptop on top of the cost of the minutes.

Everyone sure wishes it was free, Id bring my laptop too.

Carnival's very own Frequently Asked Questions list can be very useful.

Here's the Can I access the Internet while on board?:

For those guests who want the option of staying connected to the rest of the world, we proudly offer access to the Internet with our onboard Internet Café and wireless networks using the ships own satellite connection. The Internet Café is open 24-hours a day and features private terminals with the latest flat panel computer monitors.

The Internet is accessed via our C-band satellite system and utilizes state-of-the-art compression and acceleration technologies to deliver the best guest experience in the cruise industry. As a result, guests can feel right at home while surfing the Internet at sea. Guests will have the ability to send and receive e-mail, chat online and access the full Internet. Guests can also access their own e-mail account through AOL, Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. Alternatively, guests will have the option to use their very own temporary e-mail account with our “Cruise E-mail”™.

We also offer wireless Internet access across our entire fleet. Depending on the vessel, we have either limited wireless access in and around the shipboard Internet café and select public areas or a complete “Bow2stern” wireless network. The “Bow2Stern” network allows our guests (and crew) to enjoy Internet access from literally anywhere on board, including all public areas, lounges, bars and pool decks, guest suites and cabins. To take full advantage of this feature, guests should bring their personal laptops along with them, as the number of laptops available for rent onboard is limited. In addition, this network supports the latest Wi-Fi enabled i-Phones, Palm Pilots and Blackberrys. These wireless deployments are available fleet-wide.

Internet Café Price List :

To utilize the Internet service, the below options are available. Please note that the Internet pricing options are identical, whether an Internet Café terminal is utilized, or a laptop. All Internet access charges will be billed directly to the guest's onboard “Sail & Sign” Account. In addition, when using a Café terminal, files can be downloaded as "read only" but cannot be saved, since a floppy disk cannot be inserted into the PC's. Users who bring their own laptop can read and save files without restriction.

An initial one-time Activation Fee of $3.95 applies to each user.

A basic time charge of $0.75 per minute (“Pay-As-You-Go”) is available. Minutes are rounded to the next full minute.

Discounted "Time Plans" offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a lower per-minute rate. These Time Plans do not have to be used in a single session and can be used anytime throughout the cruise until debarkation; No refund for unused minutes; Upgrading selected pricing option is not available. Plans are subject to change.

Cruises 6 days in length and longer:

100 minutes for $55.00 ($0.55 per minute)

250 minutes for $100.00 ($0.40 per minute)

Cruises less than 6 days in length:

30 minutes for $16.50 ($0.55 per minute)

60 minutes for $24.00 ($0.40 per minute)

If your personal laptop does not have built in Wi-Fi, you can rent a Wirless Radio Card on board. To rent a Wireless Radio Card for your personal laptop, the rate is $10.00 per day, optional insurance is $3.00 per day. This allows guests to connect their laptops to the ship's wireless signal and is in addition to the Internet price plans.

A limited number of laptops are available for rent for an additional $10.00 per day, or free with a Time Plan purchase; and optional insurance is also available.

Wow...thanks....I guess I won't use my laptop for the internet....maybe just to upload my pics. Or hell, maybe I should just leave it home!!!:D

Spot on - why lug it along just to upload pictures, that what cards are for - storing. There are some people who like to bring it so they can upload on the ship and do various other things but not me.

Unless you need it for work or or something really important, just leave it home. Buy a bigger memory card for the camera if needed, it's cheaper than paying an arm and a leg for slow internet that will take forever (slow upload speed = $$$$) to upload large picture files anyway.

Great idea cards are pretty cheap these days and a lot easier to carry.

A bunch of little ones actually, that way you can swap them out every couple of days and not worry about losing all pictures should the worst happen.

Prior to owning a laptop, I would go online on the ship and think it would be nice to have a laptop, so I could do it from the my balcony, and download the pics off the camera, etc. Finally got a laptop a couple years ago, and took it with me on the Pride last summer. Used it the first sea day to download the pics off the camera, and started to write my review for here. Took it back to the cabin and didn't touch it again until time to pack at the end of the cruise. Not sure I'll even bother next time, especially if we fly to the cruise.

I always thought taking a laptop on a cruise was a waste of time until our Glory cruise. Adult son brought his with us. At the end of the cruise, we stayed in Florida for a week. On the second day, I developed an abdominal aeortic aneurysm and was hospitalized for five days. After getting out, I couldn't fly because of 39 staples in my chest. Son flew back home but left his laptop with us. That was our only connection to our friends and family back home. The hotel we stayed at had free Internet access so it really came in handy. Now I think differently when people mention taking them on cruises.

Is there talk of that?

That would become my favorite PLATINUM perk. :)I upload pics on the puter and write and save e-mails of necessary communications, but always go to an internet cafe in port to send them. Sometimes there are so many land networks close by the ship, I can piggy-back on to a local connection and send and receive e-mails from the deck of the ship while in port. (got away with that in Los Cabos for about 45 minutes before the ship hoisted the anchor and swung around to leave and I lost the signal :D)

I agree, many video cards will do the job of simply storing pics and weigh a lot less, also.

I took my netbook and bought 1 hour of time . . . we just checked our email to see if anything was brewing that needed our immediate attention. Sent out one email with the obligatory "boat drink" picture attached, just to gloat a little, but otherwise we limited internet time to simply checking. The netbook was fun to have -- downloaded pics of the day and then viewed them as a slide show; got a kick out of that. If you remember to bring your cables, you can run your pics on the flatscreen TV in your cabin. We'll do that next time.

You will find free internet in some of the ports. Look for people sitting on a bench with a laptop and you have found a hot spot. I know St Kitts had hot spots in the shopping area built by the port. We also found a bar, I think in St Lucia, at the end of the pier that had free internet, we bought a drink just to support them and to say thanks for letting us have internet. I know there are others too. We just used it to send home quick emails to the kids and to brag on Facebook about how warm we were and how cold it was back home. You can download photos to your laptop w/o internet, or bring extra memory cards, bring more than you think you will need. We download our memory cards to CD's every night. We take an average of 1500 to 200 photos a day in port.

We drove down to JX in August, so the laptop was a welcome thing. I used it down 95. I hooked it up to my cellphone for internet. My daughter used it in the motel with the free wi/fi. On the ship, she used it at night to watch a couple movies. I told her if she wanted, she could use my phone for net on the ship for aim only, or just use the aim i installed on the phone. If she wanted more that would require ship time and it would cut into her casino money. She chose the casino. I do wish I had a netbook, so much smaller and easier to carry.
