Dinning with Captain?

Recommended Posts

Thanks to everyone for their advice. It's not extremely important that we do this (I'm just thrilled about the cruise and can hardly wait the 40 some days we have left!), but it is interesting to read other peoples' experiences. Thanks very much.

Our son is 21.

I sailed with my 21 year old grandson in February, and we were invited to dine with the staff captain on the second formal night.

I believe that the concierge was responsible for the invitation. This was my 37th cruise on Royal Caribbean, and my grandson's 7th.

We met the Captain & his Wife in port a few years ago while shopping of the Adventure. I mentioned we were renewing our vows on the ship and ran into his wife a few more times on board. My husband and I were invited to dine with him the 2nd formal night. Head Waiter said children weren't invited, so our daughter didn't attend. I asked the Captain and was told that he just picked nice people he met on each cruise to dine with him.

We dined with the Capt. on the Rhapsody. We were asked for no apparent reason. It was a big yawn. When he was finished eating he rose and said , "I am going up to the bridge to drive my boat." Rather dine with the musicians, those guys are a fun group.

Several years ago, our table was asked to join the captain for Formal night dinner the following night. After we all had accepted and while waiting to be escorted in, we asked why we were chosen. We were told that he (Mait're D) likes to see tables of people getting along well together who aren't all from the same group. We were 3 couples. One was on thier 1st or 2nd cruise, we were on our 6th I think (would have only been 3rd Royal), and another multi-cruiser. He said when people ask, he says he can't accomodate them. He could have been blowing smoke, but it felt like an honor to be chosen. We had a special menu and got free wine, got to keep out menus which we had the captain sign, and got a free pic from the photo studio of our whole table posing with the captain at the table.

Ironically, our original table was for 8, and the 4th couple wasn't there the first 2 nights, so they weren't chosen. They did, however, show up the night the whole rest of the table was with the captain.
