travel with 17 and 18yr olds. can they do anything together?

Recommended Posts

Went on RCCL several years ago with 18 yr old and 17 yr old friend. RCCL would not let 18 yr old into teen program and 17yr old could not go into disco after 9 pm. Thus the only thing they could do together at night was roam the ship. Does RCCL still have this policy?

I think they tend to be more lenient about the 18-year-old participating in the teen group when you're talking about girls. When she was 18, my daughter brought along a 17-year-old friend. They both went to the teen disco. She had to get permission to do this. She commented that older men were frequently hanging around the teen disco. Perhaps this is part of the reason they are hesitant to relax the rules for male passengers. There are younger teen girls in there and the ship wants to limit access to those girls by older men. Just theorizing...

HI

We just came off the Oasis in April, spring break. RCCL would not let my 18 yr daughter, who is a senior in high school, move down, regardless of the fact that her siblings and cousins were all in the 15-17 yr old go up.They claim this is the new policy , because of the many difficulties, they have experienced doing that in the past. There is an 18-21 yr old compass, which no one goes to because of the terrible activities ,(basically the regular compass with highlighted adult activities),and because they do not leave it in the cabins of the 18-21 yr old crowd. so no one knows! My 18 yr old, and myself and her siblings, actually looked around the ship for others that were in the same boat .(no pun intended). She ended up finding a couple, but it was unlike the experience she is used to having in the fun kid club of the 15-17 yr old group. As I have said, and written to RCCL, and encourage others to write, this is an age group which no cruise line caters to, certainly a cheap niche for RCCL or any other line , to get involved with to increase revenue.

guess we will have to stay on Carnival. Carnival usually lets the 17 year old at least into the disco. Why can't they figure out that on senior trips you always have this sort of problem with half the kids being 17 and half 18.

There have been a number of discussions on this topic over the time I've been on these boards. I have 2 boys - one 18 and one 16 and this is precisely why we chose not to cruise at Easter but took a land vacation instead. This is an area which Royal Caribbean needs to address. They apparently have a half-hearted attempt at getting 18-21 year olds together but my 18 year old (turned 18 in December) would be much more comfortable with his brother (nearly 17) and other teens than with 21 year olds

OMG...This is the first I have heard of a Cruise Compass directed specifically to the 18-21 year old group. I guess that just goes to show that it is a VERY well-kept secret. I sailed RCCL with my daughter when she was 18, 19, and 20 and never a word or slight hint that something loike this existed. We knew that she was too old for "teen" activities and she was definitely not old enough for the "over 21" activities...so instead we just kind of made due assuming that she was just part of the "forgotten bunch."

She had fun just the same, but heck...they definitely knew who she was and how old she was so it would have been nice to know that something like this was an option.

I agree this should be addressed.

The last thing needed is for teens to be "roaming" the ship looking for things to do.

Especially in light of issues with teens on cruises we have taken.

Crowds of them in the halls...stairways..the elevators..the screeching and language sometimes unbearable.

so yes..RCI needs to address this group and keep them busy.

I've only been on one Carnival Cruise, but it was a school trip and we had nothing but issues as the 18 year olds had no place to go because they would not let them into the teen club, and the 17 year olds were not allowed in the disco after 9 pm. It was during spring break, and I know they tighten up on the rules during those times, but there were three high school groups on board performing. You would have thought they could have somehow tagged these groups for exception. Carnival promotes these kind of performance opportunities. They certainly benefited from using them to entertain the passengers. You would think by now they would have a better option than to exile part of the group from the entertainment.

My DDs are 18 and 20. Will my 18 yo need to show proof of age to get into the disco area so she can be with her sister?

there is a possiblity I have needed to show proof of age sometimes its hit or miss. Same thing applies in the casino and disco

Yes. The last few times I've cruised they have set up a security team at the entrance to the disco where they scan your Sea Pass. Your embarkation picture appears on the screen with your age and they stamp your hand. I got IDed every night on my March cruise and I'm 26.

This was a problem for us a couple of years ago as well. DD was 17 and her BFF was 18. They were stuck wandering which did not make me feel good.

Their seapass cards stated which age group they were in (sort of). They poke holes in them. 2 holes is under 18. 1 hole is 18-21. This makes it super easy for staff in the disco to see which age group they fall in.

Note: This is how it was 2 years ago - this could have changed by now.

That stinks, my girls are 16 (turning 17 one week after cruise) & 18 and bffs, Is there any way to make arangemaents for the 18 yr old to get into the teen club ? They want to hang out together. She's still in HS I don't want her in a disco with 21 year olds. Has anyone had success with this ?????

I did but it was a few years back with my sons. Things may have changed now. We also cruised off season so the amount in the teen club was so small it was no problem for one more to join in.

It has been a few years but when my daughter was 18 they gave her the choice. She could be 18 for the entire cruise or she could be "17" for the entire cruise. She could not take advantage of both. She opted to be 18 for the cruise :)

From my experience, many of the kids like to go to the shows and karaoke and the ice show etc. Regardless, they can do all those things together.

Honestly , no. On our Oasis cruise in April ,just a couple of months ago, they

would not let my 18 yr old senior in High School, into any of the 15 to 17 yr old things, including fuel or the living room. I talked to everyone, because her siblings and cousins were all 17,the manager of the teen activities, customer service, diamond concierge, you name it ! all was a no! Dont worry about her being in the disco with the 21 yr olds, they dont go there! My 18 yr met a girl, who was 18 on the ship,. (actually 3 of them) , so off they went to Blazes, and the other adult disco, and it was full of 50 yr olds, to me , much worse that the 21 yr old guys! I urge anyone who reads this to write to RCCL or your favorite cruise line, because they are really missing the boat(no pun intended) here, when this is such a big problem, for the 18-21 yr old age group.

As I said before there is a 18-21 yr old compass, however, it doesnt get left in the cabins of that age group, and the activities are not at all geared to the crowd. 80's trivia in the schooner bar for 18-21 yr olds! Seriously??? So no teens were there at all! They simply need a meeting place, and some small age appropriate activity, just a meet and greet would help! So if you are reading this, please shoot off an email , to your cruise line, perhaps , if they get enough emails, they will address this !

This is cruising industry issue because I was on Disney with my 19 year old. They had a college aged meet and greet, and she did stop by, but she said there wasn't anyone else there. They did seat us with a honeymoon couple, and the girl was 21. She was so sweet to accompany my 19 year old to that meet and greet, but honestly, she wanted to be with her new husband! I guess it's just not an age that cruises much?

I dont know, there were tons of this age group on our last cruise. I know this because, I asked the manager of fuel how many kids per night she turns away, she said probably 75. She said there is nothing she could do about it,because RCCL, didnt address it. Of course I told her there is always something, and suggested she just take a piece of paper and post it on the door and also just tell all those turned away to meet , perhaps at sorrento or somewhere, because all they needed was to meet each other! Putting the 18-21 yr old compass in the cabins of those aged kids would help too, even if it was a lame activity. Again, emails or letters need to be sent to the cruise lines.
