Amsterdam is back and awesome

Well we just finished a three day coastal, and even though this was the first cruise since completing its World Cruise (with a record 600 passengers for the entire thing we were told), it was quite the experience.

The cruise ship was severely overcapacity since it was a three day cruise (no formal nights, much younger crowd, many children) with over 1500 people on board. That staff was excellent despite this and the rocky seas. Daphne in the Neptune Lounge was superb. Adam, Shibu, and Leilyn in the casino were also very fun, and they paid me an extraordinary amount of winnings too which also helped.

The cruise critic party was extremely well attended and spanned both penthouses. Thanks to everyone who brough their fine wines, it was a blast. Keilyn sported her 700 cruise days medallion, and for someone only 20-something years old I was certainly impressed. This was my first Holland America cruise and I have a long way to catch up with her!

We have lots of pictures for IRL_Joanie once we get settled. Staying in the penthouses was very nice as well. A lot of room for 2 people each. The food was excellent, the pools were open as long as possible considering the sloshing seas. The new cruise director was very cool Jimmy (Lynder sp?) I am sure Copper can get his name for us, he was omnipresent it seemed like. They had a new captain too but I can't remember his name. Lots of new crew came aboard. Did get the massages twice in the spa and that was very high quality too. No pressure for any products. Smoking wasn't that big of an issue for me, though I hear a few staterooms on the suite deck did neat ozoning.

Overall a nice unbelievable couple of days, and I must say after hearing some horror stories about certain ships on here I am glad to say that the Amsterdam is certainly in top form and ready for some great times in Alaska.

I was on the WC 2010 (from FLL to Vancouver) and I must indicate that 600 passengers on one HAL world cruise is not a record at all. Actually it is a low number. For example in 2007 and 2008, 1,085 and 1,092 passengers were on in WC for the entire itinerary with very few segment people. That was 2 records.

This year, there were a lot of segment passengers coming in and out for 9, 16 or 23 days for ex. and it was difficult to get to know any of them.

My DH and I have done a few WC, and we must indicate that the 2010 WC had very little full cruise passengers.

The crew seemed to indicate it was some sort of record for that many to be on the entire cruise as opposed to a just segments, but a lot of them were new so perhaps they really didn't know?

I am glad to hear that. Two weeks from today I will be embarking on her for the first of her 14-day itineraries in Alaska.

The ones before that are shorter ones. I can hardly wait! It's my first trip to Alaska. :)

I don't think we'll be nearly as crowded as you were since it's early in the Alaska season and is for 14 days besides.

Welcome home to Amsterdam!! She was on the news again last night...and I am sure will be again today as she marks the first ship of the season to depart Seattle for Alaska.

I will be on her 55 days from today to try out the 14 day Alaska Adventure. I am hoping to find some crew onboard that I remember from my Grand Voyage last fall....but I am pretty sure they will have all changed out by then.

I just got off the Amsterdam for the one night repo. I have to say I was impressed with the size of the Veranda Cabin in comparison to the same cabin category on the Eurodam. The ship was beautiful.
