specific cabins to avoid

I ran across a site, but now I can't find it, that listed specific cabins for specific ships to avoid. I want to list our cabin numbers on there. I checked beforehand and did not see our cabin numbers on there. Anyone remember what site that was?

We have given-up trying to choose cabins. Having cruised on more then 50 different ships (including multiple cruises on quite a few ships) and after nearly 2 years on cruise ships we like to think we are experts. We used to follow the old rule of looking what was above, below and near the cabins. We always avoided the typcial bad locations like under a casino or next to an elevator. But, our worst cabins have had nothing to do with any of that stuff. The worst cabins were noisy because of a rattle in the ceiling, loud sounds in the bulkheads, smokers on a nearby balcony, etc. After more than thirty years of cruising we finally realized a lot just depended on luck. So now, on most cruises, we just do a guarantee. Funny thing is that some of our best cabins (and upgrades) have come from guarantees.

Once you've selected a ship/itinerary, you should scan the deck plans - that will give you an idea ofwhat to avoid. You do not want to have a cabin directly below a running track, or below the promanade deck. If there arecabins on the promenade deck, you will not want an outside cabin on it -- people walking by can see in. There is no absolute rule of thumb, just think about general condtions - and know what is going to be going on right above, below or next to a cabin you are considering.

I am a newbie...what is a gaurantee?

A guarantee is where you book a particular cabin type and grade - different cruise lines have different ways of showing that.

You are guaranteed at least that cabin level but you can't choose the individual cabin. And if you're lucky you may get a higher level cabin.

On our HAL Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Westerdam we booked kind of late so we had to take a guarantee - I picked a VE which is a balcony cabin (cheapest in the "V" category was VF - going up in price to a VA). What we ended up with was a VA which would have cost us about $500 more if we'd chosen a cabin in that category.

We don't have problems with motion sickness so we weren't worried about where our cabin was - ended up being right by the aft elevators and we loved the location.

I'm probably not ready to forever give up on cabin selection, but I'd have to agree that my BEST cabins were, in fact, guarantees. :-)
