They would be having to page me to guest services......I'm rarely in my cabin to receive a phone call other than to literally drop my carryon then run back by after dinner to put my suitcase in when it arrives.

I don't even unpack until midnight or after when I'm ready to go to bed.

Wow... I think that had that been me I would have missed the cruise because I would have been crying, shaking, throwing up etc that they would have to take me to the hospital...

Even if they didnt have to take me to the hospital, I'm not sure I could have calmed down enough to truly enjoy the cruise.... Something like this would have freaked me out....

Am I strong.........................HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL NO!!!

Thnx for sharing this... I am going to be extra super careful next time we're packing for a cruise....

The exact same scenerio happened to me on my last cruise on the Glory. Head of security and all. I had a little 4 inch dive knife in my luggage. They kept it for the duration of the cruise. They were very nice about it. By the way the same bag was full of plastic vodka bottles.

Scuba Gear Diving Knives: Diving knives are permitted on board. Due to security reasons, the knife will be confiscated by Shoreside Security at embarkation and turned over to the ship's Chief Security Officer. The guest will sign for the knife for diving excursions and return it to the Chief Security Officer upon returning to the ship. At the end of the cruise, the knife is returned to the guest in the cruise ship terminal.

They let me keep mine on the Victory as I went snorkeling or diving at each port.

I'm one that stays calm on the outside so I would have looked cool and collected but inside I would have been freaking out! Or after it was over when all the nerves hit you.

So glad it wasnt' anything major, also glad to hear they are doing their jobs and checking out things closely.

Seriously? They're just people...they are not going to hurt you or anything. The worst that happens is they confiscate your whatever (tool kit, curling iron, bottle of booze).

  • 2 years later...
Note to self: remove the batteries before packing special "tools" :o

Actually that is not bad advice. I had mine one time in a carry on and during a layover it started buzzing by itself and wouldn't stop. I figured the rest room room was the best place to remove the batteries. OMG

Sailed on Glory April 4-11. Recvd a call in the cabin from Guest Services about 4:30 or so asking me to come to Guest Services to meet with Security as they had an issue regarding my checked luggage. I thought perhaps the piece of luggage that contained the bottled water and 2 twelve packs of pop had leaked or something.

Head of Security met me along with 2 other security staff members. Ask to see my id, scanned the sign and sail card and told me to follow them. HOLY CRAP...what the heck is going on!

They walk me off the ship into the embarkation area and then thru all of these tunnels..we end up in the disembarkaton area. All the while they are asking me questions.."Did you bring an iron on board? Alcohol? Steamer? Knife?" Nope to all ..."How about tools?" I answered well I have a little tool kit that has handle with various heads that you screw on..like a hammer, screw driver, etc. They said..well lets see now..

Finally end up in an area where ALL THE LUGGAGE is scanned before it is loaded onboard for delv to the cabins. There is my bag sitting there...all by its lonesome self. They show me a scan of the piece and honest to god it looks like I have A COMPLETE LARGE TOOL KIT in my luggage. The scanner magnifies the size of everything! They said.."You planning on disassemling the cabin?" LOL! They had me open the luggage in front of them and we all had a good laugh when they saw that the kit was no bigger than 6 inches total!

***** gosh - funny story, bet it didn't seem too funny at the time tho.

We met a couple on the Inspiration who had a similar experience. The husband was summoned by security and taken off the ship. The wife wanted to go with him but was told to stay on board. He said there was a whole group of security people surrounding him asking him what he had packed in his suitcase - like maybe a knife? (Meanwhile, on board the wife is freaking out - trying to guess what could possibly be in their luggage. They had borrowed a suitcase from her FIL and she is panicking thinking maybe there was a gun in it that she didn't know about. She knew they hadn't packed anything.)

So, they open up the suitcase and there were his wife's sewing scissors. They had been handed down from her grandmother and were quite large. She had brought them because she needed to finish some sewing on one of her dresses. They confiscated the scissors but told them they could get them back after the cruise.

We met this couple at the muster drill in a lounge, and he was still quite shaken up.

Dang! My wife was planning to bring some of her needle point and quilting stuff with her to do on the balcony. Is this a no-no?

I had bought a couple of key chain flashlights before we went on a cruise out of NOLA last December. One was hanging on my backpack, the other I didn't open the packaging, just threw it in a suitcase.

I thought they were cool rocket looking "titanium" lights.

The security for passengers kept looking at the one on the backpack and turning it on and off. I thought they were a little weird to be playing with my flashlight, but whatever.

Then we got to the check-in desk where they asked all 5 of us to come to an office. Where we sat, and sat, and sat. Finally a security guy came and took my husband to the luggage area and had him open - you guessed it - the suitcase with the OTHER flashlight in it. Evidently it looked like a large calibar bullet on their scanner. No gun, just one high caliber bullet. He opened the bag and they all agreed it was a flashlight.

On board we went!

(And it does kind of look like a bullet now that they've mentioned it!)

When I was in Belize last year, I bought a very large dive knife at the shop since the price was great and I needed one for here diving in Mexico where I live part-time. The blade is about 10 inches long. As I came to security, I told them about the knife, knowing that it would have to be turned in.

I didn't need it diving at the rest of the ports, so I waited until the last night to pick it up. I went to guest services and asked if I could get the knife so I could pack it in my checked luggage. I figured they would have security bring it to my room late that night. Nope, security brought me the knife right then and there. I asked if they wanted to accompany me to my room. Nope, they let me walk through the ship with my big ol' knife. Boy, did I get some looks!
