car7brg Posted June 8, 2010 #1 Share Posted June 8, 2010 We are leaving in 3 weeks (!) on Triumph 5day. I currently have 2217, 1A porthole for my daughter and I. I could get a balcony for about $400 more per person, should I? I know its a matter of how much I want to pay, but are they really that great? I want to be on the odd numbered side (starboard?) because I think that is better sailing out. Currently I could get Verandah or Lido deck on that side. Also, is there too much rocking that high? I would love to surprise her, its a graduation present trip. What do you think?

SueG Posted June 8, 2010 #4 Share Posted June 8, 2010 If you can afford it, then get the balcony. It would be a lovely surprise for her.
jtm22372 Posted June 8, 2010 #5 Share Posted June 8, 2010 i've never cruised without a balcony . but just being able to sit out there with a cocktail is a amazing feeling
careywv Posted June 8, 2010 #6 Share Posted June 8, 2010 We upgraded to a balcony on the Triumph (6/26 sailing) when we added our niece and nephew. The cost was worth it for us for their first experience cruising. :)
CorvetteLady Posted June 8, 2010 #7 Share Posted June 8, 2010 I would go with the balcony. It was one of the things I really missed when we sailed on the Fantasy, wasn't willing to pay a suite price just to get the balcony. I really like my balcony. :D
car7brg Posted June 8, 2010 Author #8 Share Posted June 8, 2010 We have sailed once before, several years ago. Had an ocean view on Fantasy. 4 people, a little crowded! Do the balconys freak anyone out, like if you are a bit afraid of heights or just being open like that? I am not afraid of heights exactly, but I really don't care for the top floors of a hotel! And, she is only 18 so she can't have a drink on the balcony!

They have mocktails and virgin drinks, so of course she could. :p My niece and nephew think they are being adults when they have a shirley temple with us at a restaurant. afcj1 Posted June 8, 2010 #11 Share Posted June 8, 2010 Well, I'll be the oddball:D For $400 pp...there's no way that I'd spend that much more. I was in the same room on the Splendor and LOVED it:) Granted, it was only me, but having the portholes were great. I love a balcony, but IMO, that's a lot more for just 5 days. I hope you enjoy yourselves:D
Froufie Posted June 8, 2010 #12 Share Posted June 8, 2010 Personally I agree that $400 per person is a lot of money to spend? Especially on a 5 day cruise! That's $800 which would probably cover all your s&s card expenses, excursions, extra tips, casino, etc.! The 1A with portholes is actually a very lovely cabin (I had 1211 on my recent Valor cruise and loved it!). Depends on your 'budget' I guess - of course if you have a balcony you will spend lots of time out there -but you will need to decide if it's worth it to you for the extra $800! firefly333 Posted June 8, 2010 #13 Share Posted June 8, 2010 2217 is a very nice cabin with port holes and nice open feel to me. ... Id keep 2217 and spend the $400 some where else ... Iv had 2211 on Conquest next door. Keep your money...not a bad cabin at all. I was in a 6D (I wouldnt pick that cabin again) on Triumph and for $40 I could have upgraded to a balcony and we didnt ...so thats me. We prefer more space inside the cabin than outside on the balcony..2217 will be larger inside than the balcony.
Normal 1 Posted June 8, 2010 #14 Share Posted June 8, 2010 I agree with those who vote to keep your PT room. I was on Freedom in March with 2 DDs and we got an 'upsell' call. Moved from 4F to 8G for total of $258.00. That included taxes, etc. I enjoyed the balcony a lot more than my 16 & 20 year olds did. We did a 6 day with 3 ports and we simply were not in the room very much. Don't get me wrong... We were on the Panorama deck and loved that location and did spend some time on the balcony just not very much. Spend your $800 saved on some pampering in the spa or doing something fun!! OP is in a 1A cabin ..not a PT ..not that it makes a lot of difference, except for the beds. OP will have one twin and one convertible sofa. The PT has two twins. car7brg Posted June 8, 2010 Author #16 Share Posted June 8, 2010 I messed up the original post, it is for about $400 TOTAL, not per person as I stated. Still a bit of cash! I guess I will see where the available cabins are and make a decision. Thanks all!
