Bermudian Restrictions on Board

I have been reading that the Bermudian authorities have very strict regulations about cruise ships with respect to music on deck, gambling, show content, etc.

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of how these restrictions have affected a cruise??? Did the cruise line cancel or not provide certain activities due to these restrictions?

I don't know specifics but when we were in Bermuda last week on the Veendam, the shops and casino were all closed while we were in port. There was music around the Lido on one of the nights when they had a big appetizer party so I don't think the music on ship was an issue. As for the shows, I don't know. I know they ran but I never went to any of them.

As noted, the shops and casinos are always closed when in port but those other restrictions are not strict. There used to be a time when production shows were not permitted while docked but that is no longer the case and I don't know of any restrictions as to contents of any of the shows.

Music on the outdoor decks for pool parties is stopped by 12:00 but everything goes on as usual inside the ship.

No, I do not think any cruise lines have cancelled any stops in Bermuda, at least not the mass market lines.

Wondering where you read your information? We've been cruising to Bermuda for 10 years and have never experienced anything of which you speak. I think your information may be outdated.;)

Thanks to all of you for the prompt replies. The casino and shops being closed in Port is the norm. The information I read was on a tourist sight - updated June 15, 2010. Good to know first hand, though.

Just to elaborate on what "iheart" said, we have been cruising to Bermuda for more than 20 years, and at one time the ships were prohibited from offering production shows, but that was changed, I think about 10 years ago or so.

In almost every port anywhere in the world cruise ships are not permitted to have their casinos and shops open. Bermuda is no different.

Hey horse, you trumped me on the cruising but I have a land trip that goes waaaay back but I won't admit how far......I was VERY young.:D

I think the production shows started up about the time of our first cruise. I remember the CD saying, it's our last night in port, we're going for it and what could or would they do about it?:p

One of the reasons, or maybe THE reason for no shows in port was they were hoping the Pax would leave the ships to attend. I know on our first cruise there was an excursion to Clay HOuse with local entertainment and I believe it was sold out. That disappeared in later years so don't I know if not enough people attended or it wasn't something of interest.

People's idea of entertainment has changed over the years and they are looking for something other than the lounge performers who used to appear at the hotels. I think it is now a question of which came first, the chicken or the egg? Did people not attend because it was not something of interest so they stopped offering entertainment or did BDA just think people were staying on board to see the ships shows? Hard to answer.

People on this board and elsewhere are always asking what to do at night so there is an interest. I remember hearing an older gentleman say that years ago they would dance til 3AM then stagger back to the ship.:p People want something to do off the ship, but what?
