white pass railway--whale watching

We will be in skagway on june 1 and will be taking the white pass railway.

Would it be best to take a morning or afternoon trip?

Concerned about booking through the ship and then having fog---thought the afternoon would possibly be less chance of fog. Of course, realize weather is something you can't control.

Will be in Juneau the day before and looking at a whale watching trip. Does it make any difference between am or afternoon. I see a evening trip also.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks

If you are whale watching in Juneau you should check out Orca Enterprises tour.. much much more personalized than ship tour, small boats, highly recommended, great folks to deal with... Capt Larry and his crew schedule departures throughout the day and gear them toward ship schedules so you have no worry of missing the ship etc. It's orcaenterprises.com if you'd like to check it out.

There was fog at the summit on p.m tour also but your chances are better of less fog throughout (and at the summit on a day when it's not as "murky") in the mid-day/afternoon hours. There's plenty to do in Skagway proper. Park Rangers (office on corner on the right as you go into town) have a neat little museum, give guided tours of the town..all for free! It's easily walkable i.e. flat, so not a difficult walking tour for older people and very very informative.. The rangers there do a great job.

The Park Service Visitor center is located at Broadway and Second. It is housed in the old depot, 2 buildings down from the current depot. http://www.nps.gov/klgo/schedule.htm
