Did I Tipped Well ?

Yes We Can

Recommended Posts

All this talk about tipping crew members. We are a family of 2. At the end of my cruise I left a $100.00 tip on top of the bed. Was that enough? The service was great!

If you tipped the amount of money the steward deserved, be satisfied with it. I'm sure the steward appreciated the acknowledgement. You don't need the approval of anyone else, especially some of the rather cheap people on this board. The auto tip usually doesn't compensate the crew for the work they do as I see it, so I always tip extra cash at the end of the cruise. Some people are fine with not tipping at all. It takes all kinds.

Tipping is a personal thing. It's a value you place on service. Minimum/ Auto tipping is set as a GUIDELINE to help those of us who don't know what to tip... $3.50 per day for the Steward...

How long was your cruise? Did they do extra? Did you feel pampered? Do YOU feel it was too little or too much??? I think it was ample and made a statement to them of how happy you felt! I have not left a $50 tip per person, but I have left $40... for a seven day cruise...

No... I think you did what you wanted and could afford and you were CORRECT!!!!

I would have asked the steward to meet you at the Roulette table in the casino on the last night. Tell him/her "look, I am putting your $100 tip on Black. If it hits, you get $100. If it doesn't, well, you have already been tipped automatically." Win/win situation:D

Anyway it is your money and if you are happy then so be it. No chance I would tip that much considering auto tips are on. But that is just me. I mean exactly what did they do to earn an extra $100?

I have given a $50 before to the head waiter and the assistant also got $50. They were the best, best ever!! So if I thought the room attendant was worthy then I would. My problem is by the end of the cruise sometimes I may not have that left in cash to give. I have always left my auto tip on and usually also tip at the end, except my first cruise and then I didn't tip extra because I didn't knnow that some do that.

On a 4 night, I start with a $20 to the steward, and a $20 afterwards. 7 nights I throw another $20 in the middle. Thankyous are said in green. Last time my wife tipped the asst steward a $10 at the end and he had a smile ear to ear. Money well spent.

 Thanks for making the rest of us look bad. LOL

We've left $50 for a steward for a 7-day on top of our regular tips, but usually our over the standard is $20. Of course, now that I think about it, we've given $10 at the beginning of the week when they've kept our cooler full of ice.

No way did he make the rest of us look bad...because he tipped way too much

You know I have never cruised before but plan to in March with either a 5 or 7 day cruise. I've got to stop reading these tipping threads because it just erks me.

I work in the lodging business in a small motel. we get some tips but the norm is none!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the motel is rated one of the best here and have tons of notes saying how nice and clean and friendly the place is.

I wonder how many of you big tippers leave a tip to the maid while visiting in the USA. How much did you leave the maid in your motel the night before your trip. I'd guess to say you left a dollar or two.

This is just my opinion so please don't flame me.

Wow!!! Can I clean you room. Think about this. They have about 25 rooms to clean at $100.00 a piece, is $2,500.00 for the week. For the month, it is $10,000.00. For the year, it is $120,000.00. Plus their pay, and room and board etc....So, really, can I clean your room 2x a day?

But if it made you happy, it sure made him happy, so all is good!!!!

Gee, sure a lot of nice posts here. I wonder if there would be a bunch of "if that is what you felt like doing", "all that matters is what you think, and "its your money" responses if he had said he cut off the auto tips and left $5 on the bed? Bet the responses would be a little different then.:D

WOW! I feel cheap. Let's just say I didn't tip that much extra...yes, we tipped extra but that not high. If you feel comfortable with that tip that is all that matters. I really have a tough time when someone refers to someone else as a "glorified __________". I have been refered to as a glorified taxi driver (I am an Emergency Medical Technician). Cabin Steward and EMT's 2 jobs that can't be done by just anyone. Cabin Stewards bust their butts for our cabins to be clean so that we can enjoy them. Feel comfortable with your decision and know that you definitely made someone's day if not month. ;)

I am the one who used the term Glorified maid and you are right, I should not have used that term. I should have stated "a plain old Housekeeper".

So how many years of college do you need to;

1.Clean a toilet

2.Make a bed

3.replace towels

4.Vacumn

5.Fill an ice bucket

6.Wipe down the place with a cleaner

The above is almost their whole job is it not?

Now a little talent is needed for;

1.Towel animals

2.trying to get as much extra cash out of you as possible

S0 what do they bust their butt on?

No, I think you would see a lot of "it's your money ... but you're freakin' cheap". ;)

OK so here's my 2 cents.

Did you overtip? Well if by over tipping you mean you left more than you had to indicate that you received superior service then yes you probably did. But there's nothing wrong with that.

I used to wait tables for many years and what I can tell you is that an over sized tip like that would make my night and possibly my week. It would make me feel great and be a story for me to tell the other people I work with.

Could you have inidcated that you were really happy with the service by tipping say $20 or so. Sure. Could you have bumped it up to $40 to try to make a statement. Yes you could. But your tip has a little "Wow" factor to it. At the end of the day, are you going to miss the extra $80 you tipped as much as he's going to be super happy at the tip you left him? Probably not.

So feel good about the tip you left, and as other's have said, tip what you feel the person deserves in the future.

If you felt the service they provided was worth the $100.00 then you did not over tip.

We always tip extra based on the service we receive. Whos to say you didnt tip enough? Only you..

Besides some of the cruisers I am sure stiff them anyway so as my wife and I both would say tip away.. Also good for you, that you had a great cruise.
