Gatwick/Heathrow

Recommended Posts

My cruise is departing from Dover next summer. (July, if that makes a difference.) I want to arrive by plane and get to Dover same day. Setting aside fares are there reasons to fly into Heathrow over Dover (or the other way around)?

Thanks advance for the responses.

Using Public Transportation from London Gatwick International Airport - There is no direct rail service from London Gatwick to Dover Priory station. There are two options for travel by rail, both options involve at least one change. The first option is travel via Tonbridge; the journey time is approximately 2 hours. The second option is via London Bridge and the journey time is approximately 2 1/2 hours. Generally this service operates on an hourly basis. Please check local train schedules to confirm departure and arrival times. On arrival at Dover Priory you will need to take a taxi to Dover Cruise Terminal Two, the terminal is approximately 5 minutes from the station subject to traffic conditions.

Using Public Transportation from London Heathrow International Airport - Take the Heathrow Express to London Paddington Station. This service currently departs every 15 minutes and the trip takes 15 minutes. On arrival in Paddington, transfer to London Waterloo East by taxi; once there take a direct service train to Dover Priory Station. On arrival at Dover Priory you will need to take a taxi to Dover Cruise Terminal Two, the terminal is approximately 5 minutes from the station subject to traffic conditions. A regular service operates to Dover and the journey time is approximately one hour and fifty minutes.

So those are your options, unless you book a private hire car to get you from airport to port. :D

If you do not mind to drive yourself: from Gatwick to Dover it's much more easier than from Heathrow. Europcar/Alamo/National is more or less in walking distance (15-20 minutes) to the cruise terminal and you if their office is open they drop you right off at the cruise terminal. Same with enterprise with the drop-off but they are not in walking distance in case their office is closed.

Also if you use a taxi/limo service: Gatwick approx. 130 GBP vs. Heathrow approx. 160 GBP (without any detailed researches for your specific dates with various providers).

The new Highspeed 1 service from London to Dover starts at

London St. Pancras

not from Waterloo.

1.11 hrs travel time on HighSpeed1 out of St. Pancras

versus

1.48 hrs travel time on Regular trains out of Waterloo (East)
